Probably because we have this generalization that people who are millionaires are assholes or at least young people who are millionaires. But you can see that they aren't, infact they look like every day people, they don't wear suits or brand name clothings or watches as we usually picture millionaires. Although I do think some of their belief anyone can be rich if they work hard is faulty. If you want to be rich, you got to work hard and smart, but also have luck and choosing the right path(kids, career, spending/saving).

I think the concept of “hard work” is one that isn’t clearly defined in America. My dad worked 2 full time jobs at grocery stores, and could barely pay the mortgage when I was growing up. There’s also unpaid labor, such as caring for your children that isn’t discussed when it comes to “working hard.” People everywhere “work hard” to survive, raise their kids etc. I think that the people who do become wealthy are better at working the system instead of simply “working harder” than the average person.

    • @YouMockMe

Your father chose a family over wealth. ....the "system" did not make him have sex/children

    • @itzsweetz83
      @itzsweetz83 2 ปีที่แล้ว +123

but what determines working hard? You say that because your dad had 2 full time jobs at a grocery store, he was a hard worker. But (i mean no offense by this at all) could your dad have studied and put himself in a position for a better job that earns him more money? I'm not saying every rich person works hard, (most of them do tho), but some people can make incorrect decisions in their early life and are then forced to "work hard" and pay for those mistakes. That doesnt mean they deserve to be rich.

I liked the fact that one of the millionaires admitted that he keeps pursuing more money because of an ever-present fear of not having enough. I would love to see a study of 'self-made' millionaires who are doing what they are doing because of childhood financial trauma. I know that was true for me, earlier in my career, trying to get to 6-figures annually to prove that I would never go back to living in a one-bedroom home with no running water and an outhouse again

Thank you for your informative channel, lots of great advice and like you I err on the side of prudence.
I’m EXACTLY like you in regard to finances and it drives those around me insane. I won’t live according to my means, I live way way below my means out of a deep seated fear of destitution. The horror of drowning financially has kept my budget the same now as it was when I was broke. I wear clothes until they fall apart; I cut my own hair and drive cars until 200,000+ miles.
People think I’m broke until I mention portfolios or a Roth IRA. Basically there’s two kinds of people, savers and spenders and when I was quite poor I fantasized that one day I’d be a spender but like you said that day comes and the excitement over a purchase has faded and the true “excitement” is knowing you’ve got stability.

That shame often creates a lot of hate within people. It’s understandable but it isn’t the right mentality to have. As a minimum wage worker I’ve worked with people like her and I often find that people like that can be very negative. There’s an energy you get from them that just wants to destroy your drive. In other words if they see you succeeding they often do everything they can to stop you from improving just because it goes against their belief that people in the trenches can make it. Your success comes off as a threat to them because it shakes their worldview.

What self-made millionaires don't realize is that there are millions of other people just like them who didn't make it. If it worked for you doesn't mean that it will work for others.
I've watched Graham's channel and I like him. What I don't like is that he thinks that if you are not a millionaire it's completely your fault.

    • @donbustoarigato2997
      @donbustoarigato2997 3 ปีที่แล้ว +58

That's the American delusion. It helps prevent any political dissent from below by getting everyone to blame themselves, and excuse those, and many who succeed and often do so through less than desirable means, from feeling guilty.
It behooves people like Graham to be LESS naive! What is the great aphorism? Things are not always as they appear!

Well the reason they didn't make it is only because they didn't find what they needed to make. These people found out how to make money with no one to teach them. It's not that it didn't work for those people they just weren't able to find what worked. They weren't using the same methods and most likely eventually gave up before they could actually learn.

    • @epicmatter3512

I disagree as not being a millionaire is not a fault, so how can it be yours. Being a millionaire is something extra, and while there is no way to make it, being frugal and investing everything will tend to get you there.

    • @randomperson9390

I mean, you aren't exactly going to become a millionaire from doing nothing. Luck does help, but not everyone can capitalize on the luck and if you didn't work hard in the first place those chances wouldn't appear. Obviously though, I'm not saying everyone who became rich worked hard.

@@dr.martinlroberts1908 There are millionaires by inheritance.
Edit: For those of you struggling, let's break this statement down
There are (as in describing the existence of something; an undisclosed group, exists) millionaires (now defining the aforementioned [previous] group) by inheritance (a feature describing how said group came to exist).
So, a bit easier to read this time "There exist people who became millionaires by inheritance"
An incorrect way to interpret this statement might be "They are millionaires by inheritance", which would be defining a specific subset of the group "millionaires", which in this instance would likely refer to those featured in the video.
An important factor in being able to parse (break down) this sentence is understanding the difference between the words "They" and "There", and their different uses.
Now, normally people get confused between "Their", "There", and "They're", which is why this is typically taught in first or second grade, so as to help prevent children from being functionally illiterate (which means to not have a literary capacity to a particular standard).
Most of the people reading my comment seem to have missed that lesson though, I'll just assume it's because you're all so bright that you skipped both first and second grade.

There's a book I read recently "The Millionaire Next Door" and basically people who inherit a million dollars are less likely to hold on to the money because millionaires are actually a lot more frugal if they have to earn it. It never matters how much you make, someone who makes 60k can become a millionaire by saving, and someone who makes 100k can be in debt because of their lifestyle (expensive cars, clothes, houses, food, etc). i.e. 10:13

But if you're rich it's easy to get richer. You've a guy saying: Give me 50,000 and I give you 75,000 back in 3 months. And it works. There is always a "guy" who is smart enough to make money if he gets money in the first place. You buy smart people and tose them away when they become useless. "someone who makes 60k can become a millionaire by saving" his children who inherit the money.

    • @anamewillcomelater

So I just dusted off excel and did the math. Based on earning median salaries (interpolated based on age) throughout your entire working life, starting from the age of 17, if you only ever spent equal to minimum wage and saved all of your other earnings (all calculations are after tax), you would finally be a millionaire when you are 66 (the year before retirement).
It's a loose estimation with an assumption that median salaries would match inflation but what it comes down to is that the average US citizen (who would reach a 60K salary by the time they're 46) will basically never be a millionaire working a regular job and not investing in a portfolio.

@@xokkumaOh I agree, I think students don't understand teachers either. There are some real bad eggs in both groups but students tend to forget that teachers are people with emotions and problems of their own and are just trying to do a job and teachers forget what it was like being a teenager when literally anything else is more important to them than the class.
Idk, maybe its the disconnect between what people are willing(allowed) to share when they are in school (both students and teachers).

    • @georgiajones8263
      @georgiajones8263 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

So I’m 21 and have obviously been a student. I now work as youth worker with disengaged teenagers so I see both points of view as I may not be an official teacher but I still have a lot of the same responsibilities.
The biggest issue for teenagers in schools is that that do not feel listened to or respected by teachers and I understand I felt as a teenager I was a number for a teacher to tick off to get an increase in their pay check if I passed but as I am in this teaching role now it’s not so much the person, believe me I have met some teachers who hate children and I have no idea why they are teaching, but the time and economic constraints they are under. You are one person with a class of 25+ trying to teach them the lesson and deal with the emotions of them and the behaviours. It is really difficult and such a complex balance.
I think, I am sometimes guilty of this myself, when you become an adult and you mature you forget what it was like to be a teenager and the issues they face seem illogical to the issue we face. Adult professionals need to be more empathetic towards student but again it’s down to the government and funding. Again teenagers, not all, are ignorant and don’t see teachers as people who are under a magnitude of stress.
As I said it’s a balance that needs to be fixed.

Those wants will never fully satisfy us, we will always desire more. I want to give my kids everything but now in my thirties I would rather give them stability and to buy a home with a backyard and for my kids to have their own rooms like when I grew up. @@odatas To build on that more, its totally based on his perspective in life. As you said, "he was ok with it.". That is a very wrong mentality to have IF you want to make money. Tim is content with his life, thus he does not wish to put in the extra time and effort than these other people, especially the Millionaires have. Its a very offensive mindset to want to make money. Just like Graham said, he kept on going to open houses every Sunday. He was doing this IN ADDITION to his other job, assuming he had one. All the while he probably also dove deep into how to become a successful real estate agent. Tim, however, would rather ride the coat tails of someone else's hard earned money than be bucked off. And when we did try to buck them off, they begin this aspect where they think the government needs to change, not themselves.
I completely agree that anyone, specifically young people, has the time to be able to make money. The main factor to this, is the mindset. Its up to you how much money that is. Which also means how much work, sacrifice, wherewithal, and patients you have.

@@zwest2195 To me Tim was representative of the millions of people who dont care about getting rich and simply need stability so they can pursue whatever else it is that they want. So I think the idea that he is riding coat tails is wrong because he isn't as he doesn't want to progress further economically than where he is. As was said in the video, you can only balance so many plates and because of that you have to pick between relationships and money most of the time (if you look at most millionaires/billionaires the seem to have had to sacrifice relationships to make it to their position) and many people choose relationships or whatever else they want to focus on rather than money.

This video should have been called "self made millionaires versus minimum-wage workers". There should then be a follow-up video entitled " trust fund babies versus minimum-wage workers".
There is a huge difference between millionaires who began in the lower and middle class (which are actually a large portion of millionaires), and those who inherited their money.
I think something that gets lost in the discussions on the left is that not all rich people are super rich. Not all rich people live lives completely disconnected from the real world. Our issue is with the super rich and legacy families who become so wealthy and so detached from reality, that they probably couldn't even tell you what a gallon of milk costs. The people who have enough money to buy entire elections are the problem, not these young millionaires.

Because every rich person who has wealth came from a family member who originally had nothing and was broke. But through investments they got rich and passed it down to their kids. Graham can easily start that legacy and get his kids and their kids to be billionaires some day. As far as politics go tho we the people should've enacted a law that stops politicians from getting bought out a long time ago.

Are we gonna talk about how Brett said he "fills bags of food" for starving children...like what?? 😂 I'm assuming he means working at a food bank but that's the weirdest way in the world to phrase that.

No, I think the bald guy was spot on. The millionaires told the typical "hard work" struggle story when in reality they probably couldn't do "hard work" if their life depended on it

@@ahmorgan nah trust me. They do work hard (well..depends on what "millionaire" we are talking about...real estate who worked hard or a musician/actor whose talent brought them millions?).
I know a few guys with big bucks (not millionaire rich but on the six figures) and they are one of the hardest working people I have ever met. I see them and think for myself "I do not want to be like them, I don't really NEED that much money". So my current goal is 70k, no need to persue more.
They work long hours and sometimes don't even have time for family etc. Only resting when they sleep. They are literal WORKAHOLICS
I know a surgeon who sometimes have to operate on patients for hours... Very stressful job.
The real estate guy really demonstrates their mentallity. I do not even know how a human is capable of dealing with so much stress... but I guess they like it or are addicted to it.
Of course... it depends on what kind of "rich person" we are talking about.
I would assume a rich person who got their money from their parents, lottery, a lucky bussiness, exploiting systems etc. will obviously not have this work ethic (because there is more than one way of becoming rich... and those alternatives we could say don't require a lot of work...).
Also...sometimes...hard work isn't enough to be rich. You have to "work smart" not harder.

@@ahmorgan There's a difference between "hard work" and "manual labor". It's an incredibly poor world view if you only view doing manual or physical labor as being hard work. Spending every day grinding to learn how to become an effective real estate agent is hard work too; spending every free moment working out the logistics of establishing a company is hard work. Running a company and being your own boss certainly sounds like it can be fun, but in reality it's a lot of work, and oftentimes more than just you depend on the actions you make, especially if you're running a small startup company.
When you're working near the bottom of the rung, sure, slacking off might get you a slap on the wrist or cost you your job, but at the top it can mean millions of dollars gone and multiple people out of the job.
Most people who are self-made billionaires are the kind of people who, even if stripped of all of their money, in a world where currency didn't exist, you could drop them in the middle of a situation and they'd spend 80 hours a week trying to improve their standing in it.

@@PrometheusXV ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Just because they aren't doing manual labor doesn't mean they aren't doing hard work. To say that they don't is discrediting them heavily, and if it was so easy as bald guy implies why not do the same?
