I think a lot of people are misunderstanding here... I don't think that Maron is calling him out for not soing the show, so much as recognizing that he (Maron) was so bad to him back in the day that there's not much of a core friendship that would compel Jon Stewart to do his podcast. I thought it was self-criticizing, which I think is legit

I believe that Jon would have accepted a private apology and bury the hatchet that way. I just don't think Jon is keen on the idea of airing their dirty laundry publically and Marc profiting off of it.
Also, Marc's anger resembles that of someone who is a "Dry Drunk". That is someone who quit drinking but still has the A_hole tendencies of someone who is a drunk

I like Marc Maron. I can relate to him (unfortunately). Why do I listen to his show? Because I always come away with some remarkable insight. Even this story gave me an idea, and I'm not sure even Marc realizes this, but it's good in life to not be able to right all your wrongs and tie up all your loose ends. Being a dick to people has consequences, and people are not required to "get over it" or accept somebody's amends if they don't want to. It humbles you to recognize that. Marc has mentioned that many addicts are obsessed with being in control and what AA tries to teach people is that you have to learn to relinquish control over life (and the world will still turn when you do). Marc's quest to apologize reflects that need for control, and Jon isn't gonna give him the satisfaction, and that's alright.

Being Jon Stewart has made himself a household name with his success, this Marc Moron guy wants Stewart to accept his apology and if Stewart doesn't he's going to portray him as an asshole. I haven't heard of this Marc Moron guy until a couple a days ago and I can see he's an asshole. He doesn't deserve forgiveness because he doesn't appear to be truly sorry.

My favorite thing about Marc is that he's a complete person -- he's made up of entirely grey area. Certainly not an angel, but definitely not horrible either, and that's what makes him so likable for me. Plus, he puts a lot of effort into being a work in progress. He never stops learning from the asshole shit he's said or done, vs. a lot of people his age or even younger, who've decided "nope, I've done enough growing".
Also, when you're alone with your spouse or your best friend, you always get salty about that ONE person you have bad feelings towards. Anybody who says they haven't ranted about someone they dislike is lying. Marc made a bad choice and decided to rant to an entire audience about it. A mistake he will likely repeat because he's so open and candid about his feelings in his comedy.
Jon Stewart was right for turning his invitation to the podcast down. Marc knows that, for sure. But with Marc it's always all or nothing, so it was LET ME BE INCREDIBLY CANDID WITH YOU ON MY PODCAST or WE'RE NEVER TALKING ABOUT THIS. Now he just has to sit in it, poor bastard lmao

As much as I love Marc, I think the spectacle of doing it publicly for his podcast is more interesting to him than actually making amends with Jon. He knows there isn't likely to be some kind of friendship there suddenly, but it could still be a great episode. However, Jon is a famously private person, very much the opposite of Marc, and I don't see him opening up with a guy he doesn't like just for the sake of entertainment, which is what it would really be at the end of the day. Who knows, maybe it can still happen. A lot of Stewart fans are very much against the idea though.

Seeing a lot of comments about Maron as a "self-absorbed" or "egotistic" comic, and that's not wrong, but I think it misses the point. His "thing" is not as the relatable everyman that you could enjoy a beer with, he is at his best when he is at his most vulnerable. That vulnerability and willingness to be flawed, and then to hone in and focus on those flaws, allows the viewer to put their own guard down so that those moments where something clicks can be rewarding, and sometimes profound.

    • @kevinw712
      @kevinw712 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The irony is that I think we as a culture tend to largely (if not entirely) associate the descriptors of "self absorbed" or "egotistical" with people who demonstrate those qualities grandiosely in a way that projects positivity and self-worth about themselves (even if they seem obviously unearned to many looking in from the outside). But as Maron has very clearly and bluntly covered many times over the years, the narcissism door very much so swings both ways, and he embodies it even though he genuinely has a lot of self loathing and neurosis. It sounded like he even almost in this interview voiced the thought of "even though you're seemingly making yourself accountable in how that all these many people hate you and have lingering grievances, the better truth often is most of them simply aren't thinking about you FULL STOP. Be it in a good light or bad light".
And yeah part of Maron's charm and his wit and just overall vibe, he wants to and is trying to be better. That while on the surface it may seem humble and noble to so quickly veer away from diving into anything positive about yourself, the self loathing can be a dangerous rabbit hole and you wind up what is still obsessed with yourself basically, and that's not super healthy.
And I say that as someone who, sure as hell is far away from being a standup comic, or any entertainer, and still has myself enough self-loathing in one body to cover like 5 other people of average mental health lol

Thats true, but its also a way of saying that he used to be an asshole, now he has learned how to use his assholeness to make money. He basically lucked into his celebrity, whereas Jon Stewart actually worked for his. Who in their right mind is going to be attacked by a vengeful idiot, who really was never that funny UNTIL he started interviewing funny people, and put up with their assholeness for the sake of a show. All it means is that virtually anything on his show is NOT genuine or to serve any purpose by 'show business'. Which ironically should be the LAST thing a person with any 'integrity' woudl want to do.

Matthew Paprskar He fascinates me in a way. He's genuinely self-aware and contrite about the resentment and meanness he displays sometimes, but he can't totally break free of it no matter how much he tries, and I believe he sincerely tries. I genuinely hope he finds peace of mind someday. Being that trapped in negative attitudes, even when somewhere in there is a nice person, has to be absolutely draining.

When he's on point, it can be a Zen experience, cathartic, like watching Thelonius Monk at work. I guess I also have a fondness for L.A. comedians. A big part of his appeal is exploring how messed up he is. He's very up front about. Let there be no doubt about it, he's messed up in so many ways. The kind of person you want to keep at arm's distance.

It's nice to know that pretty much every person that has posted a comment on this video has no real experience or knowledge regarding Marc's career, or the kind of person that he is if you actually meet him face to face. I've liked Marc since I first saw his material on Evening at The Improv on A&E in the late 80's. I think Doug Benson was on the same episode, back then... doing the same jokes he does today.
His perspective was always based on how he was making an ass of himself on accident, and how he dealt with the internal humiliation and conflict that arose from those actions. His visible embarrassment over his words from 2009 says more about him than what all of the people that are siding with Jon Stewart (an almost unapproachable multi-millionaire at this point) seem to appreciate. Marc has nothing to gain from apologizing to Jon other than trying to be a better person and move past the stupid things he's said in the past about a person who didn't deserve it.
Marc is self-centered from time to time, and there's nothing wrong with that, really, but he at least has made an attempt to apologize publicly on his podcast for being a dick to Jon in the past... how can you Hipster idiots not acknowledge how hard that may be to a person with a public persona? Oh, that's right... aside from your retarded facial hair and anachronistic clothing choices that are supposed to be "Ironic", you have no real thoughts of your own on such matters.
I met Marc during my anniversary around 2006 or so when he had his show with Jim Earl on Air America, and I told him that I was the guy that e-mailed him and the town I was from and he shook my hand and thanked me for driving over an hour to see him at the Melrose Improv (Doug was there at the bar complaining about having to pay for his own drinks to a fellow comic). Marc's material was hysterical and honest, and after the show I started to walk out with my girlfriend, Marc went out and called out to me from the sidewalk, and asked me what I thought of the show.
I told him that I have always loved his material, and I really liked his bit from the early ninety's that he re-told in a new way, and he thanked me again for coming down to see him work out new material. I was incredibly flattered that a man that I had always enjoyed and I always thought would work it out to the point that he would be huge, who actually is now, because he deserves it.
If you think that Marc does things only for himself in his interviews, try listening to the interview with Louis CK... that was a very frank and honest conversation on how Marc did things wrong with Louis, and how he wanted to sincerely apologize to one of his best-friends and repair their relationship. I really think that Marc is trying his best to be not only honest with himself, but also with us... and being honest with complete strangers is often really hard on the person who is trying to share.
All I'm saying here is: Ease off on the Judgement... why are so many people on TH-cam such entitled, sanctimonious pricks? You're watching the video, right? It's free, and if you don't like it, than shut the fuck up and move on with your life... Marc or Jon are not he sources of your personal flaws or failings, here. Get over yourselves...

"Ease off on the Judgement... why are so many people on TH-cam such entitled, sanctimonious pricks?" Good one, pal. Maron and Stewart are both in the "look at me" business. As such they've put themselves out there to be looked at, and ultimately judged .. if only on the merit of their talents. Glad you had a rewarding few minutes meeting the guy .. but it isn't too difficult to see why some find him tiresome and self-indulging. The Louis CK interview was good for one reason .. Louis CK (who, unlike Maron, has a genuine talent for self-reflection without the indulgent crap that Maron lays out daily at the start of his podcast.)

It could be that the guy who Put's It All Out There is a sneaky and duplicitous guy in person, is only Mr. Honesty for exploitative purposes.
I tend to doubt that possibility, only the shadow knows.

maron wasnt just being "honest" with stewart, just a plain dick to him all the time, calling him a corporate sellout because he had tv gigs while maron himself was on tv, thats more hypocritical than honest

uh no, marc maron was just being young stupid douchebag, mamy comics are how you describe maron, louis ck, joey diaz, patrice o'neal etc but they werent known in the comedic world for being super jealous dicks!
Jon stewart is the reason maron got his first show & maron would just talk shit on stage, the guy was just a bitter jealous person, self admittedly.

Well, he happens to be one of the most respected comedians in the business. He has his own television show which just got renewed for a third season and his podcast is the most-listened to podcast in the world with celebrities lining up to be on his show. Just because you never heard of him doesn't mean he hasn't accomplished a good deal.

Pete Agassi You really need to calm down buddy. I don't think Stewart needs you to individually defend him, or individually attack those that don't like him, on TH-cam. Have some self-respect.
If you don;t know who Maron is then you haven't followed comedy that closely over the last 20-30yrs. That isn;t anyones fault but your own.

Good for Jon Stewart. Where is it written that you're obliged to field a less appealing comedian's abuse with a sense of irony and then let the guy use you to further his burgeoning late life "career" with an "apology interview"? No matter how much Maron tries to facilitate this "I'm learning to grow up, folks" sincerity on his podcast intros, he's clearly one failed venture away from his old bitterness. Never trust a guy who knows nothing about sports.

Marc Maron is missing self-awareness? Did you bother to what that four and a half minute clip? Because he is very self aware. He understand how jealous he has been, how he acted was wrong, how much of a dick he was. I actually respect someone who understand their faults like that. I'm still not a fan of his podcast but I respect the human being for understanding his shortcomings. That's how you can correct them.

    • @permafrost0979

Maron is always owning up to how f'd up he is, or how mean he has been to ppl, to the point of apologizing publicly even. To the point where you're squirming uncomfortably and wishing he had talked to them in private, cuz now you feel like you should probably call your dad and have a heart-to-heart with him and you don't wanna go there man, you do NOT wanna go there! Lol! I agree that Marc's tone isn't "sweet", he he is definitely self aware and somewhat empathetic.
