TY DC for everything you show us. I am back on the bench lowering my '50 Chevy shop truck. Can't say TY enough for this timely clinic. I've never rusted anything yet, it's an art all it's own. I will someday, and I again TY for this advice. have a great Sunday, best of health to all. Later!
awesome video buddy i built this same truck as a shop truck i weathered mine too i use wood stain on mine and put the frame outta the 37 ford kit under mine and it turned out awesome thanks for the video
Perfect timing on this clinic, Doc! I just finished stripping (used to be bright yellow) and priming a 64 Impala for my first weathered beater project! Thanks!
Rattle cans are all I use...now, anyway. Need to get my airbrush working. Its cheap and easy and no clean up, or very little. You are right, in the fact that the salt is hard to get off, but worth it. Very simple to do. Great video and can't wait to see her done!
Awesome tip doc & awesome work so far on the chevy truck, I'm gonna be doing the same thing with my ford f-100 when I get a chance. How much is the can of platikote & where can I get it? Kutgw, peace!!
I have a can of Plastikote Ruddy Brown primer on the way from Amazon, but in the meantime I used Krylon Ruddy Brown as my base coat, I had a hard time brushing the water on for the salt technique, the water just kept on beating right off, would it be better to use a spray mist bottle? Or is that just intrinsic with not using the plastikote primer? ( when I get the plastikote primer, will that problem be alleviated, will the water brush on evenly, and stay on the primer?) Thank you for your awesome clinics.
Amazing video lets give this guy a pat on the back and like his videos iv LEARN so much from this video thanks man ps are you still marketing vidios I'd like to ask you a few questions
Hi Doc your patina is awesome, it looks so genuine. I love how patina cars are becoming popular I have always been a fan of it, even though my fellow auto painters and teacher think its a dumb fad. Realistic faux patina is something that is so lacking in the custom paint industry. I am in an advanced auto painting class and would love to use this technique on fauxing parts for a patina truck to match the existing panels. Will any granulated substance like sugar work as a salt substitute?
so KRylon is an enamel, right? I tried the hairspray technique (no salt) with testor's rattle can enamel and had a devil of a time just scraping off a little paint with a toothbrush.
looking awesome Doc!great tip!I have a spray gun and compressor.but i been using spray bombs so long now that i still like them. And once you know the tricks of cans you can get some kool looks.
hey doctor cranky, I loved your video on how to do it, but there is one thing I don't get. I apply my primer, then put the salt on? how do I use water to apply salt? and how do I get the salt off?
GREAT JOB.. I LOVE IT LIKE ALWAYS. I THANK YOU FOR GETTING ME BACK INTO MODELING.. I NEED A FAVOR. I JUST MOVE AND HAVE A NEW WORKING STATION. I NEED STICKER IT GIVE ME INSPIRATION.. AGE DONT MEAN CRAP..
So after you add the water and salt you use a different color of your choice. Then once that color is dry you use sand paper to rub off the salt? I just wanna make sure I'll do it right
Round and round away she goes where it stops we alll knowwwwww haha. Good stuff buddy. Two more and shes at 888. Awesome video as ALWAYS. When I tune into a video from Doc Cranky theres no doubt that it will be informative and full of knowledgeable tips. So super appreciative of your videos. I couldnt have a better mentor. What if I wanted several different colors of top coats to give the effect that the car had been multiple colors throughout its history? Would you primer>salt>paint>de-salt>re-salt>paint?

This was the inspiration for my current 50 Chevy 3100 build...I love this color combo DC.
I do too, which is why I mixed so much of it. LOL.
I made mine a Matt dark green (camouflage green). It made it look like a service truck, I also mounted the sun visor on the front.
Thank you so much, For showing that you can do this without having an airbrush. I have done this sense watching this video
Great video! I honestly don't have the patience to set up then clean an airbrush each time.
This is perfect I wanted to do this technique but its looks so good but don't have an airbrush. Thanks!
Great clinic will try it out soon

Love that jade color I used it on my charger model a while back. The winter is over let's build some models!
I did this, and it turned out fantastic!
Another great video Doc! Do you have a video showing how to decant rattle for airbrush use?
thanks for the clinic doc might try this way too. looks great
my girlfriend says I can't use her toothbrush anymore, but it worked great

Yea thats the brand i used on my 41 chevy the classy lookin one the dark colors are nice but the light colors run off thin raised areas on the body
What do you think the best primer would be for die cast metal. To weather or even to customise diecast cars?
I would still use Plastikote or Duplicolor
once again great vid.........!
do you have a video of you actually doing the process? thank you
This is awesome, thank you!

Can you post a link to the Tim Holtz pens distressing clinic? L ooks very cool and I can't find it.
I looks fantastic btw doc!
So after you add the water and salt you use a different color of your choice. Then once that color is dry you use sand paper to rub off the salt? I just wanna make sure I'll do it right
Yes, and you can use a hair dryer to speed up the process.
Can you use another color other than Green on the top coat like maybe a red are so
Jason Wright Of course you can.
you mix all three and make one coarse mixture?
Would this work on wood?
What do you do when you sand all of the way through the primer? I like the way that rust looks by the way.
Usually I will apply more primer to the spot after I isolated with some tape.
Alright thanks
Doctor Cranky can I use that Krylon satin green over some Testors semi gloss primer gray enamel? Will I have any paint issues?
I wouldn't tempt the fates, Bernard. I always recommend staying within the same paint system.
Will this work with diecast cars?
Yes it will.
do you put the salt on while the primer is wet?
No, never. Use water to make the salt stick after you spray the primer and it dries.
ok thanks
Why don't you show us how YOU did this weathering just work on the model, thanks.
Put pva glue on were the brissuls meet the plastic
