Thanks AMG! I’m dealing with a similar issue with my daughters Mazda 3. My plan was to replace the transmission input / output speed sensors (which I will still do) but, for sure I will disconnect the TCM and use electronic cleaning spray as well as to relocate the module away from the heat source based on your experience here. At a minimum - it can’t hurt, but that might be my actual problem too.

TCM is probably good. Most likely there is a loose connection with the CAM bus communication wires at the tcm female connector@@asianmechanicguy6483

Thank you for the insightful vid. I have a 2010 Mazda 3 that is experiencing hard gear changes especially in reverse. It also has a parasitic draw draining the battery if left over night with the battery cables connected.
If the TCM is indeed the culprit for my transmission issues, can a faulty TCM also be presenting the parasitic draw issue as-well?
Based on my research, one of three speed sensors can also create issues with the transmissions function such as the Input shaft sensor, output shaft sensor and vehicle speed sensor. Out of these three sensors, is one of them more prone to giving the transmission shifting issues?
The instrument cluster illuminates on with the headlights on but both RPM and Speedometer gauge needles are not functioning at all. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated as I’m trying to get the vehicle back on the rode. My TCM looks similar to yours but I also want to verify that it is indeed the issue and not any of the speed sensors. Thank you for your time. New sub.

Perhaps inserting a thick piece of heat-resistant material between the TCM and transmission body would alleviate the TCM thermal damage.

Thanks kabayan for the informative video. My daughter's car had the same lights come on. My mechanic said he couldn't fix it and asked me to bring it to Scarboro Mazda and Mazda suggested that it will be too costly to fix. Seeing how much work you did just to get to the TCM, I understand why Mazda thinks it was not worth salvaging. I now wonder if I just junk the car. Mazda told me that even after changing the TCM, other parts may also be damaged. Considering how expensive cars are these days even for second hand cars, I really want to salvage this car so my son can use it. Wonder if you have any suggestions.

Just so people know that you don't necessarily need to buy a new TCM. Depending on where you live, there are some companies that do an exchange or repair for these TCM's, as they have a very high failure rate. It can be as low as 1/5th the price of a new TCM... In my opinion, Mazda should have been made to do a recall for these, to replace and relocate them off of the transmission.

Hi, I’m having an issue with my 2012 mazda 5, code P0766 (shift solenoide D) do you think the TCM can cause this issue or just a solenoid failure? Thanks

    • @asianmechanicguy6483

It's interesting that this started happening one day as I was turning at a traffic light. AT came on and I wasn't able to shift anything. The same night after not driving it overnight, the AT light was no longer there. The Check Engine light is on (and still is) but it had been there for a while even after my mechanic looked into it. This summer after changing the battery of the car, the Check Engine light went off.
The AT light comes on at times and sometimes doesn't. I could even drive it on the highway for 10km and when it comes off, I'll just park to the side, turn off the car, leave it for 10 seconds and ignite again and the AT light is no longer there.
Just wondering if this is common for my TCM to be replaced or it could possibly be a connection?

My AT light went on my 2011 Mazda 3 at the beginning of December, went to the dealership and they said it was my TCM. I found the only one in the state at another dealership and took it back to the dealership where my car was at to be replaced. Then after a week and 1423 miles later the light was back on. Then they said I needed to do the trans fluid exchange to see, I did that for another few hundred dollars, then the light was back on within 2 days. Then they said we tried those things, it’s your transmission. I have an automatic transmission, 20 thousand miles later I’m still driving it without any problems thankfully, the light is still on. I just don’t know why they couldn’t tell me it was my transmission from the beginning. Also, wondering if it could have been a bad TCM even though it was brand new. I have 305,000 miles on the car. Mostly highway miles.

    • @asianmechanicguy6483

the problem with transmission is that u cannot exactly 100% determine the broken parts until u tear down ur transmission and its too pricey to do that ..So most shop they go on alternatives like checking ur TCM first or ur fluid cuz those parts are easier and faster to diagnose
