- If you’re unsure whether you need to compress your mix, you’re probably thinking about things the wrong way. Join Gregory Scott, Kush Audio’s resident plugin and hardware designer, as he screws your head on straight and helps you to understand why you might - and might NOT - want to slap a compressor on your mix buss.

Why do you think that anyone wants to look at your stupid face? What are you, a failed actor or something?
Cheese ball.
I love my face! And let's be honest, cheese balls are DELICIOUS!
What's up with you Nolan Cook? Need more java?
Who raised you?? lol
I love that Kush pinned this comment. That's 'balls' right there. I have been using Kush' plugins for years, never seen or heard the person. What a cool cat! Philosophical, deep, honest, artistic, and pendantic in all the right ways.
Stupid haters are so funny
The like button alone is not enough to express how much I enjoy these videos and how valuable they are to me.
I appreciate that, truly 😊
@@TheHouseofKushTV Hey Gregory ! You should check the traduction proposed automatically for this video !! It is totally CRAZY !! A youtube problem, a hacker ?! What it is??
I love these videos so much too
Such a shame You were forced to watch it.
I fully agree Jacob. G. S. is a multilevel B A D A S S, and a simple 👍 is not enough.
Lots of good youtube channes tells us how to move faders, but this one helps you to think before we move a fader, thats why i love it
well said 👍👍 so easy to get lost in the flow of making changes without stopping to think about where you're going!
Exactly, and even prior to thinking: paying attention to how it feels.
It’s true. I think the toughest part of mixing is listening before acting.
Yes, this is what is missing nowadays. Feeling it, not calculating or mixing with eyes.
Yeah. This channel gets to the core of the matter. Really happy I came across it.
Bob Ross didn't teach you how to paint, he taught you why to paint. That's what I love about these videos. Gregory Scott lays out where to paint some happy trees in your mix.
The only channel that I actually get excited about new episodes. Kush After Hours.
Absolutely
Thanks fake comment guy.

The best audio teacher on the internet. Captivating and easy to understand. Brilliant explanations.
Hey man, I wanted to point out, from a dancer and producer standpoint. You, ARE TEACHING PEOPLE HOW TO BE ARTIST, which is much more important in my opinion than being skilled at a particular art. bravo. dance education needs to bend to creating artist rather than dancers
Really great point here. As a painter, I can relate as academics / schooling taught me much skill but what and why to make art -not a thing that came out of it really.
Your comment reminds me of Black Swan and how the main character was technically perfect but held back in her career because she was too emotionless
@@cory99998 man its so true its almost sickening lol
Another great lesson: "Compressor on mixbus to create movement (enhance or deeper or change the groove) " - Thanks Mr.Gregory Scott!!!!! Oh Captain, My Captain!!!!!
I, once, accidentally put a buss compressor on a drum bus for texturing. Hours of tweaking, bounced the file and it was magical. The catch here, however is the compressor was all in bypass mode when I was tweaking. I was an idiot for sure. But learnt that sometimes your sound doesn't need anything. Placebo effect? I do not know. But this was one eye-opening experience for sure.
Thanks for your video, btw. My only go-to YT channel when it comes to audio post-processing. Love from India.
Great idea for a Placebo Compressor, one dial to turn, does nothing 😂 Gregory saying, “can you hear it, can you feeeeeeeeel it?” ✌🏼
"A comp in need is a friend indeed, a comp with weed is better" ?
do you know the story of the magical button in almost all the vintages studios back in the days? when they had a guy who think he knows ( without really knowing anything) asking "can you push the 2K's a bit ? or something like that...they were used to turne the magical button ( which doesn't do nothing of course, that the trick) ask the guy" tell me when you think it's ok?" and then, the guy was very very happy... :D it's all that matter....be happy with what you do
Compression... just a little for glue. If i really need more volume i also use saturation... it's easier on the ear drums
@@glennbob9315 Ahah so true, this thing we all keep under radar "ye Im good you cant hear the difference but I do, oh wait it is bypassed" (generally we hide the fact that we noticed it is bypassed right ?), shame on us. Or "what the... I am on 20:1 and it does nothing this plugin sux" bypass off.
“Odds are its probably there before you can hear it.” So true. Great advice 😎
This channel is everything to me right now. The House of Kush is all I need in 2021.
minimalistic living, i must say
Kush. You should do a Live Stream Q&A one of these days! I would definitely tune in. Thanks for the insights.
Aside bus compression, parallel compression on drums have been the gold key for me to achieve more pro mixing.
My main improvements actually came from working with good drummers, lol. And then yes, parallel compression!
Oh my God! Every person has a special character in his mind that he knows as a hero. Today, when I was looking for the correct compression training as usual, I saw your attack and release video. Wow, this is unbelievable, the answer that he had not found for years, in your hands. It was. I was tired of everyone coming and just explaining the buttons and buttons to us. But here you showed the feeling...! I have studied math and theory for 20 years, but I never found this anywhere. You are a unique character in every way!
I love that you're not humming and rambling over an Ableton window. You are actually just explaining how to think about this stuff. Super helpful for a newbie like me.
Ermergherd, the way you put it each time gives me a new view and approach on something I've been doing half my life
thats not sarcastic btw, These are some of the best insights anyone has ever given me on this tooic
Awesome, glad to hear it!
as a firm believer in understanding the "whys" rather than the "whats", I really appreciate you treating your audience as critical thinking humans. thank you for what you do.
I don't know why exactly, but for mixing-related content, I find that I understand the most when it's just a chill talk and explanation of the subject without showing video of the DAW graphics doing its thing. This is exactly why this channel and SonicScoop with Justin Colletti are my favorite. In that order.
"Is it necessary" - "This doesn't really make sense to me unless we contextualize it."
Thank you! I see this kind of question all the time and the first thing I want to ask is, "Necessary" - for what? It may be necessary for one thing but not another. It depends on what you are trying to accomplish and whether this is one potential solution.
You know? .... What I find helpful is, as we listen to the teacher teach... A great form of follow up to all that IS being taught, can often lie in the teachers own material...
Sneaky little devil is a great format for you to say: " Ahhhhh... That's what Gregory means, when he was talking about 'X'"...
You'll be rewarded to actually 'hear' many of his topic's applications-
Thank you again Gregory for your work-

I know why this is the "House of Kush". Because its one of the dopest spots to be on TH-cam! Period
I wish there was like an ultra subscribe button or something... Gregory Scott is the man, every video has the perfect amount of wisdom and is very well delivered and the concepts are all crystal clearly explained, gets me thinking on the right brain path for success, all thumbs up to Kush After Hours
Best audio content on TH-cam 🙌🏼
Wow, thanks!
You're truly one of my favorite people on TH-cam. You're a great teacher and I love the vibe!
kush is love, kush is life
I hope to God one day I get to work with Gregory Scott. Even simply hanging out with him in a session would be a life changing experience for me.
UBK making the mysteries of audio production understandable for all, and all without having to demo it. "Mixing is SEXY baby!"
This is like ASMR where you learn stuff. This dude is chill as hell.
Hearing these concepts hit harder the second time. Thank you. Keep the craft going 🤙🏼
I'm honoured that you took out time to explain more on that question. Obviously your perception is really advanced ( I mean what do you expect from someone who makes mixing tools). I've always looked at mixbus compression as a tool to control dynamics, but I will try and approach it differently next time to see how it affects the rythm and feel of the whole mix. Thanks 🙏
A long time ago I watched a video from this guy. I, at 1st, thought this guy is totally baked...but after several episodes.. I appreciate his genius! Keep 'em coming Kush!
Discovered this channel this morning. These are not just lessons in audio production, this is also a masterclass in how to teach. As a music production teacher myself, I will benefit from both without a shadow of a doubt.
My mixes have improved more in one week than they did in a whole year watching this guy's content.
I gotta tell you, in 30 years in Boston, NY and DC, with about 500 sessions under my belt on 24 track analog, I never once heard anyone use the term "glue" when mixing. Not even once. The whole idea of "gluey compression" I think is to correct artifacts that result from mixing ITB with no console. The console itself is a bus and does some natural compression, coloration and dynamics just by passing audio though it. That being said, I totally agree with everything you said and if you need compression, use it. Just don't fall into the standard TH-cam mentality of "Do This On Every Mix" and stuff like "bus everything" because One Size Does Not Fit All.
Ha! I'll bet nobody said 'warmth' or 'saturation' either 😛
@@TheHouseofKushTV lol! You got that right! Sometimes we couldn't get away from the saturation. I was running Ampex 456 on a Studer A80 at +9. I never bothered looking at the meters. I just listened for the needles clicking on the pegs, lol.
This channel is a gold mine that keeps on giving. Every other channel is teaching specific tricks with plugins that only fix that one problem, but here you learn how to think about mixing as a general concept, and that makes the knowledge applicable to any scenario.
Love the metaphor about everything being "polite". Beautiful.
Confession: I don't actually work with sound. I just found that these videos are very relaxing and his wisdom translates well to other forms of art.
Please do more videos like your video where you explained drum compression. Actually being able to hear the differences was really nice.
Absolutely! Producing those kinds of episodes is very, very time intensive. So I'll be doing many more, but in between ya gotta settle for me running my mouth 😛
@@TheHouseofKushTV I understand! Really love the videos :)

The fine points of compression can be so geeky. I love it!
I love your vocal texture in this video!!
Thanks! I'm starting to really get the hang of the ol' resonant low shelf, works a treat!
@@TheHouseofKushTV Audio Genius!💫💙
Keep these coming, such good stuff about hearing the fine details, or even applying a compressor without the audible effect of compressing the signal.
Meta comment, but thank you for sharing your experiences with the autism spectrum (on the podcast especially). It really gives me the warm fuzzies.
One of the only TH-camrs to thrive in making unique content
Awesome as always Gregory. I love the way you always put ears and feeling before reaching and tweaking.

i like that "85 db- should JUST hurt my ears in the right way" statement , you make it sound like music is an artform .... ;-)
Was this audio using mix us compression? Lol.
Best videos ever. This is a great explanation. People should know the video that actually shows mix us compression. Cuz it's awesome.
The way you deliver the ideas is just brilliant. It's like sitting in a nice room in the evening with a great friend and exchanging the thoughts.
The most extensive, and understandable videos I've seen. So well done.
So consistently good that I upvote automatically before even watching, just so I don't forget. I love the idea of using compression artistically, for effect, rather than just a problem solver.
You have an amazing mind and a truly generous spirit Gregory. Rock on mate. PK.
I've watched this video like 30 times. I love you, Gregory. I've been playing music for 25+ years, but I never tried to produce my own work until the pandemic hit last year. For those of us who are primarily artists, you are a godsend. You understand the technical aspects of engineering really well, but you know how to speak to artists. Yes, sometimes the words and the concepts used by artists are less precise compred to the technical jargon used by engineers. But if we cannot use language in a flexible manner, then we can't actually talk about art. Plain and simple. Thank you brother!
Spectacular dynamic range and volume on the hair tonight Gregory, 2am in Australia and confirmation that the emotional impact is real. Thanks for another great lesson teach 🙏
Thanks for these tutorials. You teaching contributed to sign three tracks with a record label. You just create a great sense of understanding
Mazel!
Been binge watching your stuff man, can’t believe I’ve been sleeping on you so long! ;(
I have Sneaky Little Devils in my playlist. And every time one of your songs come on, it immediately takes me to a whole other dimension from all the other mixes on the playlist. I think that's saying a lot for your artistry. Great work sir.
Waking up, fresh coffee, and a new video from Gregory. The best way to start the day.
Every episode brings me closer to audio enlightenment and your pacing, explanations, language, voice and delivery make all these concepts easier to grasp. You are the Alan Watts of audio. Thank you.
I always try to put on one of Gregory's videos before I begin a mixing session. Such solid advice, and focus, it helps put me in the right headspace for the project, and whether it's a new video or one I'm revisiting for the 5th time, i always get something important out of it. Thank you, you're awesome!
I clearly need to make a UBK Motivational Speech app! 😛
@@TheHouseofKushTV ha! I'm sure folks would be into it =) this is motivation enough for me 😁
You’re giving every intern what they really wanted to learn while they were grinding out 16 hour shifts doing food runs and watching the cameras. 😂
“A little on the spectrum”, eh? I knew there was a reason I enjoy your videos and why you do so well with all you do. Thanks for all you do. I appreciate the insight and inspiration. The psychology of sound isn’t addressed enough. I tend to mix my drums loud too :)
Out of alllll the TH-cam mixing tutorials, advice, and tips 'n' tricks, this channel is the most valuable to me. There's A LOT of them. There are so many do's and don'ts and it can all be so overwhelming. Especially when everyone and their grandma have videos claiming they know "the right way" to do things. Most of the time they just repeat something they heard from someone else's content(most of which are home studios that have never mixed a record in their life). Your videos are the realest, down to Earth bits of advice I've come across and I can't get enough. They always make so much sense and hearing you speak about things, sometimes the words you say just click. Fuck the "rules". Thank you so much for your content! You will always have my support.
The true voice of reason. Love the vids!! And my recently acquired UBK Fatso!!!
JFC...the stuff you talk about just blows me away. The whole sharpness in digital thing 2.5-5k...damnit I thought I was crazy. Love the channel man...keep it coming!
Right? When everything was hitting tape, I had to work to get aa bit more oomph out of 4k. Now I have to work my ass off to keep it in check. Don't get me started on 2k!!
Thanks for speaking my mind, its like a deja vu extension of it! 😄 Started mixing every day on youtube now, and the more you do it the more you realize how unbelivably right you are! 👍
Using mix buss compression as a source of movement is brilliant. Absolutely eye opening thank you so much for this!
im getting back into music production/ mixing after about 13 years. I'm glad i came across this channel. You put it in a way i can understand.
@10:20 I too love juicy, colorful boxes... great video UBK, love your insights, plugs and hardware!
Great continuation of the "Hearing Compression" video. Thanks for another piece of the puzzle, UBK.
Sooooo, i subscribed yesterday to try out your plugins. THX 4 this beautiful and ''stylish'' explanation of everything that you speak of. Younger generations should learn something from people like you. After 35 years in business i MUST admit that i am quite suprised with plugins. Specially with Clariphonic on piano. I also tried Novatron and UBK on mastering process. Absolute fantastic. Most important thing is that Kush plugins work great with signal from my 16 track tape. It's like mixing on old analogue desk. And believe me, my MCI 500 racked EQ, and ADR Express limiter are beasts ;-) So keep up a good work. All the best to Kush Audio ;-)
I absolutely love the way you speak about how music should sound BEFORE processing. Some of the best records of all time were made with minimal equipment. It's all about capturing a performance, first and foremost. The best recording engineers in history knew how to capture the best take, and then use what few pieces of outboard gear available to them to subtly enhance that performance, using their expertise in an effort to bring the listener 'into the room.'
I am 58, had my first paying gigs at 14, and then began playing clubs at 15, in 1977. I'm a lifer. As a result of my 44 years in the trenches, I have a few of my own insights into studio technique, etc, but I never tire of your cogent and original take on music recording. I wish I had some of your advice decades earlier! Thanks for sharing the benefits of your experience in such a relaxed and personable manner. Keep 'em coming!
Cuz, I love the way you talk about the art and the emotional impact; that's what all this work is for. Gets forgotten in a lot of videos about mixing.
Thanks for letting us geek out with you:)
Gotta be honest.
I love mixbus compression.
And parallel compression the way Andre Scheps does it.
But over using it is a bad idea for sure.
And this applies to everything.
This is an incredible topic.
Right?? It's funny, the thumbnail was intended to be cheeky, but I think people are getting the idea that this video argues against mix buss compression when I spend most of the time explaining all the lovely things it does to a mix and the things I use it for! 😛
That hair's getting longer by the week, buddy!
Once again a great video. People forget that mixing is an art.... would anyone say to an artist "Do I need to slap some cherry pink on this canvas?" or "Is it important to use up and down brush strokes?" - it's art. Too many rules have been made by the guys who churn out video that say "Use these Top Ten Tips to get perfect mixes"...... I spent years in my room as a kid splicing tape, playing with four tracks - hanging around studios as a teen to "play" and "experiment" with sound..... hours and hours of learning by doing it... and often doing it badly - but that was I how learned to do it better... and all without TH-cam!!
Have a great weekend!
Fantastic video. I think everyone starting out gets this feeling of "I need to do this" because they see everyone on forums telling them to use this EQ or this compressor, so they start to assume certain processes apply to every song/mix by default. Of course that concept is ludicrous, but it takes a while to figure this out and deprogram yourself from the madness. 😄
I was telling my mom that you responded to my message and how happy I am, because I watch it every evening after making my music stuff in the basement. This was right before I wanted to watch this video. When I started, you said „same grey hoodie, bigger haiiiir“ and I was laughing so much and was running to my mom to tell her (unfortunately she can’t speak englisch but she was happy for me).. I love you man, just great content. Feels like home watching your videos. What more can I say, just keep on making that great content 🙏🏼❤️❤️
Always love this channel. So informative in a soulful way. The way I treat music.
YES!!!! More new videos coming in!! The People had spoken and the Teacher responded!! keep em coming!! You're seriously the BEST Mr. Kush!!
You might be the coolest guy on the internet. Thanks for your videos
I love that you mentioned that, at the end of the day, we’re all just making art. It’s easy to forget that and get caught up in insignificant details. Great stuff!
well i just learned a lot. i'm definitely better at recording than mixing currently. working my way up to being a solid mix engineer, and the mix buss my challenge right now, so this was magical. It never even occurred to me to think of transients as being high frequencies, (which they obviously are) and to use a buss compressor to blend them appropriately. sheesh. it would've taken me years to notice that. kinda embarassing, but oh well. I like that the first priority of these videos is to think about things correctly, and that means ways that help.
Wonderful! Your videos bring a very unicque approach and very precious knowledge. It's being mind widening for me to watch them. Thank you for this!
I can't get enough of this channel.
It truly is unbelievably helpful.
Thank you so much
Zen and the art of Kush After Hours. Always great stuff Gregory
Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and wisdom Gregory Scott. I look forward to your talks and get excited when I see a new one. I need a T Shirt that says Gregory Scott is my spirit animal.
Jeeeesus the way you just tone things down with your explanations is so calming and just refreshing especial with a lot of mixing and mastering tutorials that just go straight to turning knobs without really digging deep into explaining the thought process and deepening the understanding of why are you even using something before just slamming a processor or plugin in your chain.....THANK YOU..💕👏👏👏👏
That sad, MAN, I've never thought to use attack that way, to smooth out the 3-5k region. That's a solid trick, I'm going to be using this! This is defo something I tend to never be satisfied with. I've tried EQ'ing a little lower. It makes some difference. But rounding off transients... That's genius!
Thanks bud!
I produce music with synthesizers and groovebox. My Mixer has two channels with inserts. So I tried to figure out how compression effects the sound, but couldn’t find anything positive. I thought i need someone who knows all the tricks and shares his knowledge. I will get back to the compressor after watching your videos. Thank you so much.
I've just discovered your channel. Just wanna say that I love how you force the listener to use their ears (intentionally or not).
Every word that comes out from his mouth is a MUST TO THINK ABOUT. Brilliant!
Good answers. Last time I checked their is no one decision fits all. I routinely run my masters through my tune analog leveling amplifier for the warmth that device contributes to the process with the leveling amplifier on bypass. Thanks Gregory!
Probably the most valuable advice anyone could give on the subject of working with music in any capacity: not "does it need xyz", but "will xyz serve the song". Regarding the latter, you still have the decision to make, but it's informed by something. Whereas, doing anything by default makes the decision for you every time and it does so without the objectivity of knowing whether or not it will benefit the music. Brilliant, Gregory. I also really enjoyed your article in Attack Magazine on how compression actually behaves. That literally blew my mind when I first read it and I've since passed the info along to my peers, many of them scoffing in disbelief. I always suspected that "the attack time is the amount of time the compressor waits before compressing" didn't really make sense, but I could never quite articulate why. That article brought it all into the light for me. Thank you!
your voice and speech is magical!
It is very inspiring to see someone emphasizing the subjectiveness of mixing decisions. I sometimes do things because I think they are needed... I should question that more often and try minimalistic approaches until I feel the need of a specific tool that does the job.
