MY SOLO TRIP TO WAKKANAI AND RISHIRI ISLAND, HOKKAIDO (稚内市, 利尻島)

- This year on my birthday, I decided to go on a solo adventure to the northernmost part of Japan, Wakkanai and Rishiri Island, Hokkaido. It was my first to go on a solo trip, and I was so excited about it. When I told my Japanese friends about my birthday trip, they were surprised and told me that there's nothing to do and see in Wakkanai. Little did I know that this trip is going to be one of the best trips of my life. I learned so many things about myself, and I met wonderful people along the way. Wakkanai and Rishiri Island are two of the most beautiful places I've visited in Japan. If you're into nature and the great outdoors, then you should definitely add these places to your bucket list.

Is it still cold in May in Wakanai?
Hi! I went to Wakkanai in Sepetmber. The best time to visit Wakkanai is in summer. It’s still pretty cold and windy in May.

I´m going to Japan for 2 weeks. Tokyo and Osaka are a given. I intend to spend the entire second week in Hokkaido. I want to take a day trip to Wakkanai and back. The next Island up is Russian territory, or what they stole from Japan after WW2.
Hi! Sounds like a great plan! But Wakkanai is pretty far from Sapporo, so I suggest you stay overnight. If you’re planning to do some sightseeing, you can also take a ferry to Rishiri and Rebun to make your trip worthwhile ☺️

Actually, my friend who’s from Wakkanai arranged the transportation for me. Buses are scarce in Wakkanai, and it’s pretty difficult to explore the city without a car. But there is a taxi stand outside the station, maybe it’s possible to negotiate with a taxi driver to give you a tour for a certain price. I hope that helps ☺️
