Thank you for putting a spotlight on our discipline Gary. It's great to see people getting enthusiastic about benchrest and showing people that it's not as easy as the Trolls seem to think. 👍

I'm 59yo and have shot springer since the 70s, just bought a 2nd hand BAM XS B50 and a cheap rest to see what this is all about and am enjoying it thoroughly. Thanks for the video I've learnt a lot.

Benchrest shooting in my opinion is all about knowledge and experience. Learning what equipment to buy and how to properly utilize that equipment. Shooting in and reading the wind is definitely a skill. Determining a proper firing solution is paramount in this style of shooting. As we definitely have a firing problem when we attempt to hit the 10 ring at 100 yards. I’ve learned more from competitions than anything else. Would love the chance to shoot with you. You are a class act!

Gary, you make these videos fun, warm and engaging - when so many others' are like watching grass grow.
That knee's going to take a while. It's good to adapt - some would just give it a rest.

Hi Gary great to hear you’re going to make it to the worlds. Here’s a tip from a stick shooter with a weak back and knee, get a sling, bum bag and water bottle to clip on your belt so you don’t have to take your bag on the course and are constantly bending down twice a peg to take your gun in and out.
Hope to meet you at the worlds as we’re in the same group(red). Paul

man i do love a bit of beach rest 👍 not so sure they call it varmint any more think it changed this year . try changing the back bag to kiln dried sand i found it made it a bit more stable . plus you being you i am sure you could make a front rest out of an old scissor jack 🤣🤣 wow mate that old knee is going to take a bit to get back to full power but you will get there 🤪

Thanks for the video really enjoyed it and learned a lot. Just as an aside, I don't know where you got the impression that birds and rice don't mix, that's an old wife's tale. Birds in the wild eat rice around the world without any problems.

I shoot 30x at 25y, 40x at 50m, and 60x at 100y, 600y, & 1000y, ISSF/NSRA & WBSF/UKBRA, ISSF benchrest equipment is cheaper, and requires the rifle supported on a firm front rest that does not guide the rifle in any way, and the butt supported in the shoulder, it's actually harder than WBSF. All points based, and usually more than one target on a card (except 100y). NSRA Scores outwards at 25y, and inwards on 50m/100y.
WBSF has very expensive front Seb NEO type front 1/4 inch pliable rests that guide the stock, rear 1/4 inch pliable sandbags that guide the recoil, and even a hand rest is allowed under the trigger hand. This discipline is more about reading the wind and picking your moment to pull the trigger, with group size and points being separate scoring on the same card scoring inwards. After many years shooting ISSF, this still feels like cheating, but its a different set of rules, equipment, rifle stocks, shooting skillset, and discipline.
I'd be very interested in undertaking this type of Air Rifle Benchrest shooting, but I don't think there's a club doing this in Shropshire.

💯 agree about what you said about benchrest the way you’re doing it helping with hft and ft and personally think it would help with any discipline. Only think I would say is I prefer plastic pellets in my bags as rice can attract moisture an go mouldy… A properly calibrated benchrest scope will (I believe) have a centre dot that matches the 2mm bull
Ps hope you get knee sorted soon 👍another top video

been trying to figure out what the ghost sounds like when it shoots as its very springy, but then it hit me! you know when you grab a pool cue and bounce it of the ground and you get that broken lead sound.

I hope you will be mentioning NSRA indoor benchrest at some point in this series. I suspect far more people are involved in NSRA postal competitions that WBR - there are 57 divisions each with 6 shooters in the Yorkshire league alone. The rules are different and designed to limit the cost of complex rests (simple front rest and no back rest) so its far more approachable for shooters unable or unwilling to invest vast amounts in gear.

  • @Judge_Dredd

Unfortunately, like many shooting disciplines, you can't correct all of the equipment/technique at the same time, usually changing one element/technique at a time is the only way to do it, with coaching over weeks/months, trying to adjust everything from scratch in one session or a post response on TH-cam just isn't going to cut it. I've only recently started doing Benchrest (Air) 25y, and my scores are abysmal compared to rimfire, so I can at least point to the fact that it isn't me, I have the wrong rifle for job, and unfortunately I need to gather many more brownie points from 'er indoors before I can rectify this in a gun shop.

Yes you could use an average pcp to save cost along with the sand bags...but you've got near on £2000 worth of gun/scope there, and please don't tell me it doesn't make any difference..it does...My mate and myself do have friendly comps with the same targets,he has a Daystate Huntsman and me a Compatto, both .177...but more interesting is doing it with Springers..he has a HW97K and me a Diana 48 both in .22..it's always better to have a laugh with the springers
