Thanks for the update, mine came with the 410 hub unfortunately it was discontinued and very few available and mostly sold out. I did check the construction between the 410 and SLX XT XTR . 410 and 510 microspline freehubs have less moving parts and does not have the crown spacer. Truly you did a great job in this video.
Right, neither 410 nor 510 has this messy crown plastic spacer connection!
Thanks for covering this issue. It's helped me avoid wasting time and throwing money at a unsolvable problem. Will move on to another brand.
Glad it helped in a way. At least with knowing the problem a bit better. Good luck, mate!
I just got a brand new set of XT wheels M8120. It has the newer XTR dark gray spacer. Great videos, I’ve been watching these videos and have one question. As long as I watch the rear and keep up on maintenance what is your best guess how long the hub will last?
Hi, Jonny! If you overhaul the hub every 700 miles, you should get at least 3500 miles. I’ve just relaced the wheel with a new XT free hub. Let’s see how many miles we both get this time. I’ll be posting updates! 🤞
I would also like to hear updates.
I would also like to know if the black spacer needs replacing, and how often
Is there a tutorial on how to convert to FH-MT410 for example? You would have to respoke the whole wheel right? Thanks for the video already!
Right! You'd have to relace the wheel for this jail break. I personally like ParkTool guide on lacing. In 9 out of 10 cases you can reuse the old spokes, since these Shimano hubs have close sizing.
Not sure what caused my mt410 similiar issues. New bike after maybe 500km. Next week i will go to servise
Is this a problem with the Deore Cues hubs too? I have the FH-QC500-MS
Best solution is to change to another brand hub. Even the China brand is better.
Is it possible to change just the freehub body to a dt Swiss ?
Sadly, no! The only way out is complete hub replacement with wheel relacing.
i m on my 300km ride on my new xt hub, i did not install the spacer but i applied heavy grease on the hub spline and the ring teeth, so far no creaking, maybe because i m light 62kg, waiting for it to creek to regrease again, hopefully it can last,
@@pastori70 hi there, already more than 1thousand km and the hub is goooood, i regrease the hub at 800km anyway without any creak so i m very happy, silent and rolls forever, the newer hubs with serial no starting 22xxxxxx are no more silent as shimano have recall all the first generation hubs due to excessive complaint about the intermitant hub sound and some hub failure all becos of the broken plastic legs got stuck inside the hub, i remove the 2 circlip that says do not remove and grease all the gears inside, u still need to install the plastic spacer but cut off all the legs as i found out if u dont install the spacer there will be slight rubbing between the hub body and freehub, i use this mostly for daily commuting not so much on mountain biking.
@@tlwong6752 thank you so much for answering, mister!
I figured too, that maybe after every 800-1000 kilometres, greasing would be good!
So you cut off the spacer legs, hmm. Because the hub and freehub is aluminium, I believe that will wear out the hub sooner.
Well, I’ll see what happens! I’ll give this hub a go!
@@pastori70 i check the teeth wear its not dented at all because all the teeth engage at the same time so its quite strong, even if there is wear its really minimal not that i can see, i m still looking for the older version of the freehub as the new freehub body is no more silent, i got 3 sets of this hub would u believe but only one set is the first generation silent freehub.
@@tlwong6752 Right! Good to hear something positive about this hub! I checked my brand new M8110 today. It has factory grease and black plastic spacer. I’ll order more spacers so I have spares!
It's a shame they can't design something better to replace it and send everyone updated hubs. Has anyone changed over to the FH-410 or FH-510 hubs from these? Are they considered a better design in terms of longevity, at least?
Have not tried either in person, but they are much simpler and shouldn’t cause this kind of headache 🤪
I tried to buy a pair of xtr m9000 hubs recently, you can't buy them anywhere, it's because the m9100 is failing, badly,on everyone and the old hubs have sold out as people abandoned 12 speed, after the crankset recall and the little known xtr 12 speed rear shifter issues, i really do think shimano need to stop trying to faux innovate and stick with what is tried and tested
Imagine Shimano switching to steel gears in the next gen and marketing it as “stronger and more reliable than ever before” 😂
i drive hubs from 20 century and no such problems
I just bought an XT wheelset and after watching your videos I returned before ever using them. I ended up getting a hunt 30mm internal wheelset and Ibis Blackbird Send 35mm internal wheelset. Just saw a video of the Blackbird Send wheels being repeatedly landed onto the sharp edge of a railroad tie and had 0 damage. I’ll stick with gold old pawl design freehubs. Thanks again 🙏
You did the right thing! 😀👍
