I end up doing the bare min lol. I have heard that you should store your potatoes and onions in different areas, something about either the moisture or ethylene gas. Since I started storing them separately, I do notice them lasting forever.

    Your fridge is so peaceful!
    So, in regards to washing stuff, I have heard that some produce, like berries for example, will go bad faster is they are washed long before you eat them. But other stuff, that usually gets sprayed with water in the store, seems like it makes sense.
    My only pet peeve is washing things in the sink. It’s probably just me, but I’m grossed out by people who soak greens or herbs in their kitchen sinks because I think most sinks are filthy. We wash our hands in there, pour out beverages that have our saliva in it, etc, so unless you were to give the sink a really good scrubbing before you do that, I’m just concerned there’s a lot of bacteria in there. I usually wash my greens in a bowl, in fact, I bought a big hard plastic restaurant storage bin to wash greens in, specifically things like chard because it’s so dirty and big. So I don’t wash anything in the sink, but rather I rinse it under the tap.

    • @abetweene
      @abetweene  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, in summer ive been drying them in the sun before storage which prevents them from going soggy in the fridge but in the winter ive been known to just store them in an airtight container and wash just before eating as well.
      Also my sink is always cleaned and dried before this process.

    • @abetweene
      @abetweene  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    How do you dry off your produce and leafy greens? I'd be worried that extra moisture could make the more delicate greens turn slimey quickly

    • @abetweene
      @abetweene  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I pat them with the tea towel at 7:06 but still leave some leftover moisture for certain greens because it can be helpful in keeping them crisp like romaine lettuce which can withstand being completely submerged in water and stays really crunchy. for those that need more wicking though you can place cloth or paper towel inside the container to absorb any excess.

    i always love watching your videos, always learning something new:) p.s i normally wash as i go and this video really made me realize why i shouldn't lol. // you put soap on them first and then the vinegar? if so, can it be any kind of soap ? how long do you suggest to let them soak in the water?

    • @abetweene
      @abetweene  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      correct. i use castile because it’s advertised for use on produce, so other types i couldnt say for sure. I just agitate them to make sure i losen any debris in crevices like the tops of apples, etc but dont leave to soak. same with the vinegar

    I don’t think it’s right to wash everything bevor storing it. Veggies and Fruits have a protective layer which provides them so they stay fresh longer and don’t loose the taste and the nutrients that fast. Also despite you dry the food there is still moisture left which condense in the fridge. The more moisture is there the more unhygienic it gets cause germs sprout faster.
    It is very nice to see you shopping with reusable bags im Europe plastic wrapping is mostly not allowed as well as plastic cutlery or straws ans those stuff. I hope the states will also catch up

    hey queen i have a question watching your video i see you wash your produce immediately and i have done the same in the past but with my greens I've noticed they die faster !!! a technique someone taught me is to not wash your greens until you know your going to eat them in the next few days...washing them right before consumption is the best bet to get the most shelf life out of them! anyways, as you stated in this video if you didn't wash those greens immediately there would be a whole eco-system in your fridge LOLLLLL so just wondering how do you get the most out of your greens?!!!!?? a fellow organic sistaaaaaaa needs answerssss lol

    • @abetweene
      @abetweene  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i find that i get a longer shelf life this way especially with romaine. the only thing i wait to wash is berries. To each their own. Glad youve found what works best for you 👍🏽

  • @psays
    @psays 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Would you go about washing berries the same way? I tried washing it with vinegar and water and they went bad quickly 😩😢

    • @abetweene
      @abetweene  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      how do you store them?

    • @psays
      @psays 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In a plastic container in the fridge

    • @abetweene
      @abetweene  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ok, it helps to have an elevated tray in the container so the berries dont sit in their own moisture as condensation forms, but i generally only buy berries right when i want to eat them so they only spend 1-3 days tops in the fridge or since their in an airtight container anyway, you can store them tight away and just wash them right before eating.
