The hot new Mesa/Boogie TransAtlantic TA-15 is about to start shipping. Mitch Gallagher got the chance to check one out, and in this demo he takes you through its many, many, many possible tones.
I've said this before, but I'll say it again - I love this guy's reviews. He really knows how to explain the product and tries it out with various pickup selections. Excellent. This sounds great!
First off, that's got to be one of the best demos I've seen of an amp. Second, I agree, this little TA-15 rocks a big sound. I played this for a few minutes recently in GC, and fell in love. I had wanted the Mesa Lonestar Special, but now, I think I'll get the TA-15 (at some point in the future). I'm glad you mentioned the compression in this amp, because that's what I noticed, and liked so much. Again, excellent demo.
Simply excellent! Probably one of the best reviews overall here in the "youtube-music-world"...displaying the item itself and not aiming beeing "best actor" or - even worse - "guitarhero" like so many others...
Thank you for that, brother!
Great Review, thank you for the post. Absolutely great
I have one of these kickass little amps...and the 100th comment, 14 years on!
This amp is all about vintage style low-mid gain clean and crunch tones, and it makes a great pedal platform despite not having a loop - everything into the front end sounds fine. I regularly gig one at the 15w setting on either the normal or tweed modes, with a 1x12 cab using pedals for gain ... with the volume at about half way up. This gives some lovely compression and bounce to the tone. It is a bit stiff at bedroom volumes though.
This is the best amp demo I have seen, and I have seen a ton of video demo's. Nice job.
Running effects in front of the amp is fine and sounds great. The very best players I've ever played with have done it that way. FX loops are a neat thing too but nothing to stress about. The amp is what is important, and the sound therein. Don't sweat it.
Haha, when we were at NAMM, we played a set at the Marriot next to the Convention Center. Our guitarist blew out a brand new Mesa Boogie and the Marshall guys started chanting! It was great. XD
@CrazyDiamond1968 I was referring to outboard delay. Delay pedals don't sound right when you are hitting the front end of an amp that has any kind of gain in it. The signal gets to distorted. Therein lies the problem you describe, and I see your point. Most effects loops in major mfgr's are set for line level as well, a pedal is for instrument level and you will clip the input through a loop. Marshall DSL's have a level button that you can set for pedals, works great.
I just received this Amp last week and by far it is the best amp I have ever owned compared to my previous amps; Marshall plexi, JCM 800, Fender Bassman, Hotrod Deluxe.
Great player, Great demo. He talks pretty much but only the interesting stuff. Love the sweetwater demos. Professional, understandable, overall worth watching. Cool small boogie btw!
Love your reviews ! thanks for reviewing the TA-15.
Mitch,
I told the guys at Mesa (Rich D.) about your demo. Living in Petaluma has its advantages..LOL I told them I bought the amp based on your great demo!!
To those complaining about the lack of an effects loop, Bad Cat offer the Unleash, a combined reamp/attenuator with an effects send & return and an additional line out.
Great Demo! I've become a low wattage guitar head aficionado beginning with the THD Univalve, Train Wreck, Germino, The TA-15 (of course) and the Carvin V3M. Although they sound great through a 4x12, they love 2x12 & 2x10 cabs as well. I use a Mesa 3/4 closed back, Carvin Legacy, G-Flex, THD, Buddha, Orange and some others. I can get power amp sustain at reasonable but pretty loud volumes. Try your TA-15 with all your friends cabs, you'll be amazed at the differences.
Without an effects loop you cant raise the volume with a booster for solos on the dirty channel. The valves just got more saturated and the volume remains the same. I have one TA-15 and the tone is awesome, but i´ll have to buy the TA-30.
Best looking and sounding toaster you can buy!
Picking up mine tomorrow! Ordered the 1 x 12 Transatlantic cab also. I aready have three 4 x 12 Marshall cabinets (V30's, Greenbacks)
@0AllForNaught0 . . . He is probably not even using a tube amp, 100 watt MG/Spider is what I'm thinking, in which case, it will sound better quieter than when turned up, unless you are into transistor clipping . . . .
Hey Romanus! Just put it in front of the amp. Even all the amps I have had with FX loops I never put anything in them.....I could achieve a good sound if I did however I achieve great results just going straight in. Everyone is different! ; )
Excellent review. I got a very good idea about this amp's capabilities.
Thanks for the great review. Very nice little amp there.
sounds great and love the versatility... but the orange dual terror is half the price , more powerful and sounds awesome.
Screw fx loops! This thing is awesome for exactly what it's made for!
This version is the TA-15. Not officially announced yet, but coming soon, is the TA-30. It will go up to 30 watts, has built-in reverb, and an FX loop. Just thought you guys might like to know that. :)
Digitrixster neshtepin ton
I have to agree with wanting an effects loop. I love delay in the loop.
And this model sounds great actually.
@derekmok Hey, I played one of these today, for the love of god I could not get a decent Fender clean blues sound. I tried the Lone Star which totally blew me away. It is almost double the price depending on what version you get (combo 1x12, 410 or head and box) I tested the 1x12 combo (open back) and the Head and 1x12 cab. Have a look at these. I was playing with a 57 Strat reissue and a Les Paul 50's reissue with P90's.
Great demo, great tones, unlike "The Tone King" which makes me want run away from all amps he demo.
they make fantastic amps. i LOVE their tone. go try some out.
Wow, guitarworld reviewers fail compared to this guy. GREAT review, I'm pretty sure you've covered everything without any bullshit on this amp. Awesome.
this is probably more versatile, but I prefer the sound of the Orange Dual Terror. How come so many of these smaller heads don't feature effects loops? Egnater and Blackstar do(at cheaper prices!), so why don't Boogie and Orange? *shrug*
Its all hand made and the quality of construction and parts with all their names on them is as quality as a hand made amp can be. Built like a small tank and a huge transformer again with their part numbers on them.
Great review!
I didn't really hear the high gain Mesa sound though.
I don't think he ever pushed the gain past 2 o clock. And he gave little to no attention at all to the Tweed setting.
Great amp. Wish I could get one shipped to Thailand
never used a mesa.. this sounds very nice though
Great demo Mitch. Awesome little amp, but for $899 it is to expensive for me.
Nice demo.
@doooder69
Sure you own Orange Rockverb and several Mesa Boogies ; ) You probably also owns bunch of Marshalls, Peaveys, Hiwatts, and may be also unicorns and a palace on the cloud over the rainbow.
Great review but can you guys update the details to tell use what strat you used and what pickups were in it?
Why weren't the clean sounds tested? All the tested sounds were at least a bit overdriven, even through the Stratocaster. This amp is supposed to have a Fender preset, but I don't hear any of the Fender/Vox clean chimes -- which would be what I'd need. All the tones sound more Marshall than Fender/Vox.
Mitch - The coin in in the air between a Transatlantic and whatever speaker box I can affort, and a Lonestar Special. In your opinion Heads or Tails. If you think the AMPS match up pretty well what would I have to look for in a speaker cabinet to make the TA-15 sound best.
Tell Secu Hi for me.
Thanks,
Ron Vermillion
Great review!!
great amp...one problem, you cant use a delay pedal with this amp...big mistake by Mesa, no FX loop.
Isn't it a big disadvantage that it doesn't have any effects loop? What about reverb and delays? I never liked putting them in front of the amp.
Killer Demo...
@HagstromV
That would make your delay sound with distortion out of the amp suck.
so nice Sir.thank you..terima kasih banyak,danke schön...
@tatsandteles . How do you put delay in later when you're playing live, your pedalboard goes into the amp, your delay pedal is on your pedalboard. In the studio different story, but impossible to use delay live if you're using the amp for distortion.
I was sold from the first strum
why the hell there´s not a loop fx input on this stuff?!
damn it, mesa!
@EuphorbusBTB That's a $3000 amp...it shoud kick a $899 amps ass! But the TA is a fantastic Lunch Box amp.
Sweetwater always does good reviews. . not too much talk.
@MrJakbroox Agreed!
Low watt Amps are the way to go!
@MrJakbroox Sure, I was thinking the same. By the way @SweetwaterSound what cabinet are you using for the demo?
@ngronlund not with distortion channel :(
do you think this would do for a bar gig? with a big cabinet?
@maximall111 Why is that? How does it affect it?
it sounds bright and thin - i hope thats just the strat
What mic did you use? and pre-amp if possible please!
Thank you for a decent review...
@yurmamawantsmore nah just a couple Zs and a 65 Amps. I'm still working on getting a unicorn to go with my palace I'm having built over the rainbow.
That was a long minute !
@CrazyDiamond1968 You would most likely be miking this anyway so why bother?? Put your delay in later.
I like this amp too bad it looks like a toaster!
Attention amp manufacturers:
PUT EFFECTS LOOPS ON THESE SMALL AMPS!!!!!
What's the use of an awesome distorted tone, if I can't run it with reverb/delay/modulation effects.
@slpplexi1969 If that was the case, then no one would ever buy a Dual/Triple Rectfier or a Peavey 5150. To alot of customers the level of distortion/gain is extremely important. A pedal is no substitute for heavy distortion from a good tube amp. I would agree with you if you were talking about Blues/Jazz/country music, but for heavy or thrash metal this amp just doesn't cut it.
Perfect Low watt amp IF it only had an EFFECTS LOOP!!!
Only problem I see...no output for 16ohm speaker cab...oops.
Nice amp, to bad it doesn't have reverb and an effects loop.
this is the perfect amp for all genres but not for metal !
Great review. Too bad the amp doesn't have reverb.
No reverb is like a car with no antilock brakes, it should be unheard of.
Great review. All of you othe wanna bees watch this and learn
He made no effort to push the volume/gain on the Boogie setting and gave next to no attention to the Tweed setting. Mediocre review.
Take his comment about practicality with ease. He forgot to mention: Provided you have a cabinet waiting for you, because this amp has no direct output.
Like always... MESA BOOGIE * * * * *
I didnt know Matt Groening played guitar?! :P
Ahh, delay pedals work in front of the amp too. ;-)
@Alecthekeyboardist Granted it wasn't exactly their best model.
Good parts are too expensive to charge less. If the amp is under $600, it has lots of junk in it. Cheap jacks, pots, switches, components. And most of all, transformers. Go. price all the good stuff and see what the profit would be with the price that low. Not enough to survive on.
i didnt know james labrie can play guitar
sweetwater minute is 10 minutes long...
Crank it a little more
Chris Farley: “🎶 Big Cab, little Head...”
Agreed. The guy needs to learn to play, then demo LOL. Great demos on this channel!
900 bucks for that weak ass distortion?
sounds like poop. Thin and overly compressed
7 minutes of blah blah blah in a 9 mi iré 46 sec video. Come on man
glorified egnater tweaker hahaha
this amp is a complete waste of time and money. Sure it sounds good, but its still a Boogie. Get an Orange Rockerverb that will last. My Orange is the BEST amp i have ever owned and its way more versitle and dependable. I had the Transatlantic for 1 week and its already on its way back to Boogie for repairs. Every single Mesa I have ever owned, and my bass player too, has been a complete turd.
very sterile and uninspiring
