I think Saliba was probably more at fault for the Haaland goal out of the two centre backs just because he had the complete picture and made the wrong decision twice
Saliba had his eyes on Gundohan running into space, if he had closed in on Haaland, Servinho would have passed to Gundohan instead. The mistake was Gabriel following Silva, when Partey rightfully followed him
@@ugbajointno it's still Saliba fault, he should've taken that risk they maybe city wouldn't have scored, because what Saliba did was just stay indecisive...his job was to mark haaland....look at the goal in slow motion and you'll see
@@ugbajoint You have to trust your teammate will man mark and track back well, a part of defending is also trusting your teammate will win the on game ball situations. You can cover all the 360 IQ plays you want but if in that process you leave a forward like Haaland with space upfront to make a run and receive in a 1 v 1 against the keeper then your center backs are at fault, you are literally covering the hardest play in which the opposition can score and leave the easiest option for them. Saliba is a great center back but I noticed he makes these kind of mistakes from time to time (more when playing vs France)
Getting Saka off was the right thing, his load is ridiculous and having him suffer through 40 minutes of pure defence would have almost certainly had consequences. he was within seconds of pulling it off as well...
Everytime I watch Man City in full matches (since I dont always follow their matches aside of googling them and maybe watching highlights of them late at night on tv) they always have this problem of not being able to stretch down the defence, and it also doesn't help that the most in game runs and plays Guardiola trains are the ones from the players occupying the half space instead of having overlapping wingbacks (weather inside and outside) and make the half space players stay in thir position as in "enganches (number 10s)" do in south america to then try to play inside. And sometimes it indeed gets frustrating because it is the right call for games when you are facing low blocks that are very compact, you have to make them overrun themselves, stretch them, and then get it inside the half space with someone like De Bryune and just pin the ball with a cross towards Haaland, like crosses aren't effective in a whole seasons average, but they're a tool which Guardiola sometimes seems allergic to (that and putting players with their natural foot to run down the line)... I even remember a Match of Allegri's super juventus in 2018 vs Atletico where they just stretched the opposition in the wings on a 3-1-4-2 asymmetrical shape (can as a back 3 sometimes played as a wide double 6) and got the ball Spinazzola and Pjanic to cross it. Also I think the mistake on Haaland's goal was from Saliba, he covered the hardest play to score from and left the easiest team option for City to score (just dribble and pass it towards Haaland's unmarked run), he overthought that situation instead of trusting on his teammate.
It’s a shame you didn’t have the footage for the lead up to the city equaliser. I think that White’s inability to defend 1v1 against Grealish is why we drew that match, because as you said, the quick corner routine was just what it was, there wasn’t much we could do to prevent that goal from happening and Grealish froze Havertz with the decision complexity.
Totally agree - And it was in the back of my mind when he came on and even before the game. 1v1 he doesn’t get “cooked” but he does give the attacker a lot of opportunity to progress the ball into dangerous areas
Love watching your videos! You have such a calm manner and you are excellent at using the screenshots of the match to explain concepts properly! ❤ Thank you very much for your analysis! 😊
Always love to hear your analysis; the best, consistent analysis on the web. Thanks! As an Arsenal fan, you confirmed my takeaway that Arsenal drew the game only because Pep kinda f****ed up. Arsenal invited Man City's defenders to shoot from distance; that was the concession and strategy. How many shots were wildly off target; so much so that they seemed to get discouraged? Different players, likely a different result. It seemed so obvious: Stones, Rico - I was sweating Pep would put them in. The answer came in Pep's post game interview. He was concerned about giving up another goal on the counter. But, as you note, with Saka withdrawn, the odds of this were substantially reduced (and Stones and Rico can defend!) Pep was betting that Man City would eventually get a breakthrough , which they did, but they should have won that game. Ironically, it was Pep, not Arteta, who was much too conservative. It's early in the season, Pep starts slow, and this will never happen a second time. As for The Arsenal, that's four points that two stupid red cards cost them (yes, they would have beaten Man City with 11 men). Needless to say, they missed it by two points last season. Thanks for all that you do.
It’s hard to blame any of Saliba or Gabriel in that situation tbh. If Rice had tracked Gundogans run properly (since he was the man responsible for him in the press), then Saliba would’ve easily have just went with Haalands run. If anything, it was good of Saliba to notice that Gundogan freed himself from Rice. Really and truly, it was just we’ll executed by city, especially Gundogan’s run
The set piece goal by Arsenal was due to poor defending by Man City. There were 4 players near the front post - Doku, Haaland, Kovacic and Gundogan. The ball just floated past them. Why was Walker the one to mark Gabriel. Where were the taller players like Diaz, Haaland & Gvardiol to block Gabriel? There was also no protection for Ederson. He was sandwiched btw 2 Arsenal players & cld not see & move.
Good vid - I actually think Rice not dropping back enough into the midfield, is the main and first issue. He has left Gundo free which means any decision Saliba takes from that point, poses for another problem. Saliba is in 2 minds because Gundo is about to attack his space in the middle of the pitch. Rice is higher than Gundo at this point but that’s his man, not Salibas.
I was so surprised why city kept on passing sidewards when in crossing positions. They could have won the game if Grealish was subbed on earlier and the wingers ran at arsenals defence and they just spammed crosses in. It causes so much chaos for a deep defence. Like A small deflection can become a tap in
With the red card and seeing the lack of crosses I’d also sub on Lewis for Walker as he can underlap and overlap run with the RW. This rotation Would have caused havoc for arsenal and let man city play incisive passes between Lewis, rcm and a RW and further help open spaces for crosses.
@@mohammedcassim1816 agreed, just saying it's not as binary as Lewis > Walker. Personally would've liked to see the change tho, really surprised by Pep tactics in this game.
There isn't really any one player to blame for the haaland goal, calafiori gets turned by savio, Thomas partey doesn't track Bernardo run properly which is why Gabriel was caught in two minds of sticking to haaland or following bernado and saliba also gets caught in two minds because he is cautious of gundogan run whilst also trying to defend haaland
I may say that some teams just use that tracking back approach of just man marking and tracking *until* the player is out the zone of the 6, after that you have to make your center backs defend the forward runs and the rest of midfielders to go back and track as hard as they can, that's how Real Madrid has defended for over 8 years now.
Haaland goal is a perfect example of a series of small errors having a big domino effect- calafiori got turned, partey didn’t react and close down the ball, Gabriel got his body positioning wrong and wasn’t sure who to cover, Saliba hesitates thinking Gabriel will get back to stop haaland. Any one of them could have stopped the goal with a decisive action

Yep for me that was the turning point of the second half…
White is injured and wasn't supposed to play. He can obviously defend 1v1s well and has previously shut down other very good LWs when fit.

While Grealish had Ben White who isn't as good one v one.
