Thank you a lot for a very well explained video. I have a question after our Jeep Patriot 2009 past out at a drive in northern Norway. The garage has said the timing belt is broken and they think the hole engine has to be changed. Is this true? or could it be this sperpentine drive belt that has a failure? Does the camshaft has another chain inside the motorblock? Just before the engine stopped, flashed the yellow light for battery and a red motorlamp. I hope you can answer as a good help for us :)
I am sorry to hear about this. Unfortunately if your timing belt broke, your mechanic is correct. Type this into google " is the Jeep Patriot engine an interference engine?" This will explain why.
@@DCAutoEnhancement I have checked by google search, and it seems that this 2009 year Jeep Patriot has a non-interference engine. It seems that the interference first came in laiter models. We will try to put on a new belt, but we dont know if the broken belt has done any damages inside the engine.
Hi and thank you for your video - really helpful. My serpentine belt keeps coming off when I drive through standing water, even slowly. I have the skid tray in place and the belt and tensioner has been checked and I'm told are ok... Any ideas, please, what else to check? Is this a problem you have encountered?
The only thing that comes to mind is maybe you have a slightly bent pulley or a worn pulley that is wobbling. Just curious, how often are you driving through standing water?
@@DCAutoEnhancement haha fair enough - I did make it sound like I do it a lot! No, I do avoid it wherever possible. It first happened six or seven years ago...and only three times since; the most recent time I couldn't avoid the water so I went really slow. But I have just looked at the pulleys and they're fine. But it turns out this is a different engine - the 2.2 CRD - I think a Mercedes engine... So the belt and pulleys are different anyway! Thanks for getting back to me, bud.
What is the wrench size. For the belt tensioner pulley that you're using. I don't have that wrench I'm trying to understand if I could do it another way. But I don't know is that a socket and what size is it for that particular vehicle!
We replaced mine and now it won’t start at all. We even replaced the battery thinking it could’ve been the problem. It started right up but then the battery light came on the next morning. The alternator itself was replaced 3 years ago. What do you think could be the problem?
The car will start without the serpentine belt on. If the battery is fully charged, it should start but if the alternator is bad, the battery will only allow it to run for a short period of time. From what you said, it sounds like it might be the alternator. I am assuming it is cranks but not very strong?
Before changing the battery it wouldn’t crank at all. We’d jump it off but as soon as we’d take the cables off it would slowly die. After changing the battery it starts like it normally would but the battery light pops on. Before we even changed the belt it was only making squeaking noises, it didn’t even break/snap while driving. We were trying to get ahead of the problem but then it wouldn’t start at all after changing the belt. 😩
@@GwenRuckey if you have identified that the belt is damaged, I would replace it as soon as possible. Once they are damaged, they are unpredictable in how long they will last.
I couldn’t get the belt around when I replaced my alternator. I was about .5 inches short. I had a mechanic replace the alternator previously years ago and I think he replaced the pulleys and maybe they were bigger. I just bought a bigger belt. Fuck it.
I put LED headlights on my 2012 Patriot. I had to get the resistors for them. They would go off randomly because the computer did not know they were on because it checks the resistance on the line.

Thinking of replacing the serp belt on my 2017 patriot as the first step in diagnosing a squeal/squeaking noise when I’m stopped at idle (the noise stops once I start accelerating)-does it make sense to change the belt before inspecting/changing the pullies ? It’s at about 95k miles
If the belt hasn't been replaced since new, it's due. It's recommended to be changed between 60,000 and 100,000 on most cars. While you're changing it, that would be a good time to inspect pulleys and idlers. Thanks for watching and commenting!

great video. once serpentine is installed is there a final adjustment (tightening) that I need to worry about and complete?
No, it has an automatic tensioner. If it doesn't, you could have a bad tensioner
Good day, is the tensioner tool necessary? Could one release the tension with a ratchet and socket?
@@yuri_slava1986 not required but I don't think there is enough room to get a socket and ratchet on there. Maybe a wrench.

No, it's just easier because of the length of it. It gives you more leverage and less force is needed to move the tensioner pulley
