For Me, Ridge Racer such an amazing franchise that always like to experience time to time, the arcade excitement gameplay with stunning tracks and ofc banging tunes from every installment by Namco Sound Team is just perfect for Me, It's been 30 years... really hope for another comeback!
Great video! I've been replaying Ridge Racer 7 on PS3 the past few days, and it's definitely one of my all-time favorite racing games. It's pure arcade fun, no strings attached. Fantastic game.
I'm not even a huge racing game fanatic, but recently I went on a search to see if anything was recent or upcoming that filled that Ridge Racer shaped hole for me and got absolutely NOTHING. I then thought "well SURELY someone has done something like WipeOut recently, that cyberpunk aesthetic is huge right now!"... It's insane that they just dont exist anymore!
Oh man! You missed out the PSP Ridge Racer and Ridge Racer 2!!! Because the nitros system was introduced then, and the drifting mechanics was improved. The vibe also gets more futuristic: more absurd drifting speed and angle, more rocket like special machines, the blocky Rally-X... Hell! You can even 360 during drift, while the commentator exclaimed "WOW, What a crazy move! Where'd you learn that from?" Personally I like the PSP Ridge Racer commentator's voice and personality, it feels like you got a BRO riding with you. But in terms of the art and vibe, nothing, absolutly nothing, stands against Ridge Racer Type 4!!!
I love Ridge Racer 5's handling but I only use drift cars (the "sliding on oil" that you referred to). Its how all the previous ridge racer games handled. you could choose Grip, or Drift. Grip cars handle mostly like Ridge Racer Type 4, Drift cars let you slide around. Once you get used to how drift works, itll just click and feel perfect
The saddest thing is, that Namco wouldn't even have to put much effort into a new Ridge Racer to have success. If they just took the PSP-approach (meaning, modern RR controls and throw in all tracks from the RR history) and put some shiny graphics on it, the game would surely be a welcome addition to the dried out racing market.
I genuinely think you would have liked RR7 considering your enjoyment of NFS and midnight club 3 as it's basically RR6 directors cut, with more features, content, vehicles and even vehicle customisation.
I think R5’s gameplay is the best out of all the classic ridge racers. Every car in the game drives completely differently from one another. Half the fun is learning how each car drives differently. And getting fast enough to unlock all the upgrades versions.
2:52 - 4:24 "I'm sorry I had to let you watch that. I just needed to nerd out a bit..." NOO, why did you cut it short?? I LOVE this intro so much! The music, the graphics, everything about it! 😍 Now, just imagine a RR game on PS5. Or, maybe, don't. It'd be too sad.
I feel like Ridge Racer started to get old and aged bad during a time when games transitioned to open world, racing games included. Now that we are all tired of endless open world games and the games-as-a-service BS forza is pulling, we yearn the simplicity of Ridge Racer and other old racing games. I recently played Ridge Racer 7 on PC with an emulator and it is crazy how nice it feels just to play a normal game again.
Bro, I cannot stress how beautiful it is, trust me you'll want to make a video on it, keep doing what you're doing @@Cyb3rSnail, this game needs to come back and creators like you have the ability to keep the conversation alive and spread it. God Speed sir 🤙💯💥
Ridge Racer. Rave Racer. Rage Racer. R4 ... and the rest of the series. Played and loved all of them. OutRun SP / 2006 Coast to Coast is probably my all time favorite arcade racer. But Ridge Racer is a close second - it was my very first game for the original PlayStation. What a time it was!
13:48 I love Ridge Racer 8: Apocalypse. Great that you mentioned it best game in the series. I love it in that one race where you gotta dodge the Doomsday Rock that keeps falling from the sky and empties your Nitro Gauge if it bumps into you.....
Ridge racer psp was probably one of the best games i've had that really got me into racing games. If namco didn't give up on this franchise, they would've been trillionaires. "The world of Ridge Racer, the only one to give me what i need. Ridge Racer" the time when namco was at it's peak of excelence.
Recently, Namco is said to be holding a Ridge Racer event, but before doing so, they need to announce a new game or remake or remaster. Ridge Racer's rival, Cruis'n, Hot Wheels racing game, LEGO racing game, F-Zero, and even Top Gear (Top Racer in Japan), Crazy Taxi are back. I don't understand why they can make Ace Combat, Klonoa, Baten Kaitos but not Ridge Racer. Someone is tired of waiting for the new Ridge Racer to come out for a long time, so they are developing a spiritual sequel called 'Midnight Challenge'. If OutRun and Shutokou Battle are back but Ridge Racer still isn't, Namco must be prepared to be criticized. There was OutRun 2 at British Racing Greats 2023, and Lizardcube tweeted about OutRun, Rumors are spreading in Japan that Genki is making a new Shutokou Battle.
I hope so, some of these games need to make a comeback. Tokyo extreme racer , ridge racer , so many need at least remakes. I hope genki is cooking something !
I'm always talking about Ridge Racer Type 4, I like everything about it, the intro, soundtracks, cars, I'm looking back at it so many times, it made me become a racing game fan, I will always like type 4, I wish they can put it on Android.
Type 4 taught US how 4 wheel drifting should look properly done. And that intro made picking up the girlfriend fun, she played the game and knew her role😂😂😂
R4 is the punctuation to a decade of arcade racing games and maybe the ‘90s itself. The aesthetic, soundtrack, gameplay, and even the PlayStation-ness perfectly encapsulate the era. The visual novel presentation of the Grand Prix convinced everyone they could do it one day, become a world class driver. The force feedback Jogcon and PocketStation support were future tech. Namco were masters of the hardware at this point. The game played so well, looked so good, and was so content rich. They broke the mold. I can understand why the genre doesn’t really exist anymore outside of indie attempts. It was a product of arcade design philosophy trickling down to consoles in the form of ports and similarly flavored original series. When the technology was finally developed enough to offer more realistic racing experiences, no one had the time or quarters to master a sim-like in an amusement setting. Racing games had to feel like what one might expect if they had never been behind the wheel, but easy to pick up and play and difficult to master. But the goal was always a sim and the market could only move in that direction once arcades were mostly gone. Other genres like shmups, beat em ups, and fighting games have remained relevant by finding an audience that appreciates their design, groups who understand that those genres aren’t just outdated relics of a bygone era. They still hold merit. I think arcade racers just haven’t found that audience yet. I was wrenching on cars when R4 came out. I would mess around with friends in vacant construction zones and parking lots after dark. Our lives were ahead of us. It was a calm before the storm that would come in a couple of years. All I worried about was gas in the tank and a place on the floor at my best friend’s place to catch some sleep. Silhouette Dance lives in my head rent free, its cool vibe bringing back memories of hitting high speeds in my rattley ride on my hometown freeway at 3 a.m. after the end of a long shift at work.
I got a PSone when I was 12~13yo. It came with a few games, one of them was Rage Racer. Man I had so much fun with that game... now as a grown up I looked after the game series again, only to realize Rage Racer is one of the least appreciated games in the franchise. I played R4 recently and really loved it. I hope the franchise makes a comeback soon, because honestly Namco does know how to make racing games like no other company. Loved the video!
I never knew NFS 2015 was online only, it's unfortunate because it looked so cool and the graphics were beautiful😢. I never heard of ridge racer until like this year, looks like the vibes are right up my lane
RR type 4 has smoother handling, yes. RR 5 is remake / restart of the first Ridge Racer (and Revolution). Handling in 5 is, at its core, the same as every other RR. Normal difficulty isn´t impossible, I beat the game quite few times. Hard difficulty does not forgive any mistakes. RR 5 basically wants you to master it. It was a launch title after all, there´s not a ton of content but there´s a huge replayability - it´s hard. But that 99 trial and Pac-man races etc. unlockables were fun. Ridge racer indeed needs to come back.
Ps1 games had mad good tunes! Ridge racer is one I really need to dive into, it's one I've touched on, but never fully invested! I need to get on this, been having an itch to play arcade racers again!
You started with what may be the best game in the series (Type 4). Only it and maybe the third game (Rage Racer) seemed more like complete packages. All the other games felt like tech demos for new hardware (which they essentially were). As a side note, I liked Ridge Racer V when it launched. I think the cars handled more like the original two games for the PlayStation (Ridge Racer and Ridge Racer Revolution). I started the franchise with Ridge Racer Revolution so I was accustomed to that type of handling style. I think if you had started with those games instead of Type 4, the handling of V wouldn't have felt as jarring (although as a whole I don't know if you would like those games). Overall though, the Ridge Racer series has always been one of my favorite racing franchises.
Haters gonna hate but for me Ridge Racer 6 is the pinnacle of the series! The amount of strategy in a race the three boosts and the drift supercharge brought to the gameplay was just nuts!
13:10 true but theres a learning curve to it too, boost points and chaining nos, in ridge racer 7 theres very specific tuning and stuff to maximize this, truly very competetive potential
I’d love a RR5 port to PS4 and PS5. You’re right about the learning curve though; even if you get the hang of the feeling of the car, the racer AI is still so broken. The arcade racer seems to have gone away big time. The last one I enjoyed was Forza Horizon 4. I too also play HP Remastered regularly and it’s sad to not see another arcade racer for this generation of similar worth. I hope Namco go back and try another racing game.
the only ridge racer i havent played is ridge racer 6 i was hoping to buy digitally on series s then found out its delisted i will try to emulate on rog ally
I have Ridge Racer 7 on my PS3. Its actually really good and has scored a little more higher than 6 on 360. It kinda feels more like an updated version but with more content and tweaked gameplay.
From burnout paradise I didn’t understand the open world racing games. If I wanted to restart a race I needed to drive back to the start point??? What?? And the traffic always reset itself. I remember spending hours on Burnout 3 learning the traffic patterns and fitting my car just right between traffic on corners to get gold. The good old times.
As a long time fan as I used play 6 when I see my cousin it just felt good, unfortunately this was all under Namco, not Bandai Namco there is a distinct difference, Namco went under not too long after the release of several well know games, Bandai acquired them essentially, it’s been a rough for several franchises including ridge racer since, in part why it took so long to get Ace combat 7, the sibling franchise, Bamco is unlikely to give us a return to form in 8 for several reasons but I’ve been wrong before.
The RR4 soundtrack is legendary no doubt, but I personally prefer the higher tempo/energy tracks from RR1 and RR Revolution. For me, I'd love to see RR get a fresh start with a modern version of the first game and going from there.
it was disappointing that the ps4 didn't get a ridge racer at launch or during the console's life cycle. entries of some popular playstation franchises came on the ps4, but they came so late in the ps4's life, and the ps5 was around the corner. ps4 owners had to settle for mediocre trash when we all know it still had more in the tank to host triple A titles some of which is already on ps5.
RRV is good, hard but good :) I played using a NegCon, most of the cars handled fine to me, and each has personality, where as I couldn't tell you many differences between most of the 300 cars in RR4. RR6 and 7 were definitely developed for standard controllers and the controls reflect this. All of them top quality games, from RR 1 to 7
RRV is really good. The presentation is top notch. Once you get the feel for the handling it's very satisfying. The normal difficulty feels just right too. You do have to work for it and that AI can be annoying AF. But RRT4 I could win easily on tracks I'd never even raced before on the standard difficulty. That's not how a racing game should be.
I cannot believe you didn’t play Ridge Racer 2 (2002) for the PSP. Without a doubt the best game in the series. No other game in the series comes close!
Is it just me or I want Ridge Racer 8 will be a game that culminates all elements of previous mainline Ridge Racer games? But I want an element that hasn’t been implemented for Ridge State (setting of RR6 and RR7): free-roaming exploration where you can find certain events / illegally challenge opponents to street races. Of course, sanctioned championships and other events will still exist in that game.
I'm just not sure if Namco wants to take the risk. At most I could see them doing a remake of Type-4 or release a new game that has real world manufacturers included. I've said time and time again that the Ace Combat team should have been put in charge of Ridge Racer.
It saddens me that we never get a Ridge Racer Type 8 (no, Unbounded never counts!) or sort to get the full experience of the new cars from VITA and 3DS games. For some time I thought Idolmaster was the culprit killing off any new games for likes of Ridge Racer and Pac Man, since Bandai Namco was very focused on the franchise. (Though I actually grow fond of some characters=idols as time goes) But seeing how Idolmaster got missteps recently I realized Bandai Namco is the one to blame.
13:54 Wait, what is Ridge Racer 8 Apocalypse??? I've followed the series for decades but have never heard of this (and I'm not getting any hits on Google). I saw someone else mention it in the comments, but I'm googling what they're describing (a doomsday rock?) and not finding anything, either.
I used to body love ridge racer but it all went to shit when they introduced the slide/turbo mechanic. As i doubt that namco will ever make a true ridge racer game again, may i recommend battle gear 3 for the ps2.
What happened to RR7 you overlooked maybe the best one in every way please rectify this and throw in some wipeout and ssx while your at it. But Thank you all the same RR deserves this video from you Cyber Snail.
Racing Games are dead is a mild exaggeration. 😂 I would love to see a new RR with UE5 nanite and PSVR2 support And modernize the gameplay with proper drift physics.
Why ignoring the original arcade Ridge Racer and its first port as THE VERY FIRST GAME ever released on PS1 and its sequel, Ridge Racer Revolution? I love them more than RRT4 TBH.
It’s pretty much just Codemasters still making good AAA racers. There’s indie racers but there’s no Daytona, Sega Rally, Ridge Racer, NFS like the pinnacle.
It will never be the same like 1998/1999 when RRT4 was released. I wish i could go back in the time.
I agree
Despite R4 needed years before finally got all 321 cars in the game, its an absolute total enjoyment btw.

it was disappointing that the ps4 didn't get a ridge racer at launch or during the console's life cycle. entries of some popular playstation franchises came on the ps4, but they came so late in the ps4's life, and the ps5 was around the corner. ps4 owners had to settle for mediocre trash when we all know it still had more in the tank to host triple A titles some of which is already on ps5.
And there some modern racing games that are still fun
Namco is focusing on Wangan Midnight when it comes to racing games
U should try RR in PSP, it a best of RR with tracks from RR1 - V. I had fun with that game, and I highly recommend it.
I will add it to the list !
7:55 NOSTALGIA!!
Burnout. You didn’t mention the actual GOAT. Burnout.
The one console that they didn't make a launch title for, the Switch, would have revived the series imo. Switch games were selling like hotcakes.
I cannot believe you didn’t play Ridge Racer 2 (2002) for the PSP. Without a doubt the best game in the series. No other game in the series comes close!
It's great game, but 👑 belongs to 4/5 installments
I'm playing some RR7 recently, it's good and looks great but the gameplay isn't so fun? I can see why the series was struggling.
i do regret getting rid of my ps2 and 3 the only ridge racer i have left is the vita version and its not got much content still enjoy it though
@@JamesMincey so it’s called ridge racer unbounded, I thought it was apocalypse too lol
I used to body love ridge racer but it all went to shit when they introduced the slide/turbo mechanic. As i doubt that namco will ever make a true ridge racer game again, may i recommend battle gear 3 for the ps2.
Never heard of it and it looks interesting! I will add it to the list, appreciate you stopping by !
What happened to RR7 you overlooked maybe the best one in every way please rectify this and throw in some wipeout and ssx while your at it. But Thank you all the same RR deserves this video from you Cyber Snail.
Honestly the last good Ridge Racer was RR64.
We don’t talk about ridge racer 5🙂↔️
Racing Games are dead is a mild exaggeration. 😂
I would love to see a new RR with UE5 nanite and PSVR2 support
And modernize the gameplay with proper drift physics.
RR7 was awesome, it was like RR6 with better graphics
the one's after it just completely abandoned the core concept though
Saying a whole franchise should come back cause one 2 hour game back in 1999 was peak is crazy.
Ok
What a great video Cyber! Can’t wait for the next one pookie bear 🐻
There is more on the horizon !
Why ignoring the original arcade Ridge Racer and its first port as THE VERY FIRST GAME ever released on PS1 and its sequel, Ridge Racer Revolution? I love them more than RRT4 TBH.
10:21 Skill issue?!
Hey, Cyber Snail. What do you think of Reiko Nagase? The mascot of the Ridge Racer series. I think she is waifu material.
RRV has the best gameplay but you got to understand it
Play the psp one , i promise it wont disappoint
@@GABN0MAD yep , I made a video on it , It did not disappoint
can i just take a quick moment to gush about how absolutely chad it is to stop and pick up a woman MID RACE
And sadly solar crown was mid at launch.
...aaand solar crown crashed and burned. Goddamit
Nah racing are not dead things are just kinda dry aleast for now
It’s pretty much just Codemasters still making good AAA racers. There’s indie racers but there’s no Daytona, Sega Rally, Ridge Racer, NFS like the pinnacle.
yeah, modern racing games are dead and lifeless, thats why i emulate TXR3 on pcsx2
Those games are so underrated , some of my favorites
Really hoping people sign that EU petition to make bought games have to have an offline mode or other solution after developers close servers
