    I studied Aikido somewhat briefly as a young teenager, and not only did it teach me proper body mechanics and self defense, it taught me control and something more important than how to fight: how to NOT get into a fight. Aikido has literally saved my life in a couple bike accidents, and I have been forced to implement it to defend myself several times in life (unfortunately!) I only made it to 5th kyu and somehow it has benefited me GREATLY. I plan to continue my training again one day.

    Aikido master is late Ljuba Vracarevic, member of the United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame, creator of Realni Aikido (real aikido), black belt in aikido (10th DAN), judo and jj. He was trainer for some Special forces (russian Alfa's, Lybian Gard, serbian military, etc). Great MAN...

    Beautiful art. Say what you will about Aikido, but it can be very effective if used correctly. I also love the fact that they used the soundtrack from Bladerunner

  • @theistscangotohell
    @theistscangotohell 11 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I think that aikido can be a very effective art. One of my friends has done it for 9 years, and he's a devastating fighter. The absence of youtube videos showing it in combat proves only that nobody has been filming when a practitioner was in action.
    The one objection I do have with this video, skilled though the gentleman is, is in the unrealism of the knife attacks he's facing.

      it's easy to judge a martial art as bad, when every demonstration is unrealistic

    • @borgshadow13
      @borgshadow13 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lordjiraya i agree, but that's the character of a demonstration - to showcase, not to harm.
      Would be funny to see some sparring footage but since most other aikidoka i know don't crosstrain and/or won't risk injury that couls happen - yeah not going to happen. interestingly, you see aikido's rougher familymember jiu jitsu more often and nobody's complaining there

    • @AnnaTheFallMaiden
      @AnnaTheFallMaiden 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      borgshadow13 it's not necessarily the character of a demonstration. The real problem lies with the demonstrators themselves. No matter, what technique you see (and no matter what martial art), the assailant ALWAYS plays along, which simply doesn't happen in a real scenario. Nobody with a knife will ever run at you with the knife above his head. In fact, you're lucky, if he/she even shows you the knife. Without knowing that a knife is there, you won't be able to react accordingly, hence, you'll atleast get stabbed in the arm, trying to defend. And once you have a wounded arm, try doing fancy manuvers with it.
      Jiu jitsu (and especially BJJ) is praised beyond reason, when it contains techniques that end up hurting you severly. Most techniques are aimed at non-armed combat with one assailant, when in reality, it's either multiple attackers or a single attacker, who's armed. And trust me, grappling, which is the basis for a ton of BJJ-techniques, is about the worst thing you can do against a knife attack

    • @katochimotosama3890
      @katochimotosama3890 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      how is Aikido bullshit ?

    • @AnnaTheFallMaiden
      @AnnaTheFallMaiden 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Katochimoto Sama because it relies on your opponent not reacting to your grips. in EVERY demonstration, the attacker follows the defender through the whole technique. a real aggressor will break your grip and punch you in the face

    I believe footwork evasion is absent from many discussions about aikido effectiveness. Serious aikido training emphasizes footwork evasion to muscle memory: eight directions of cross step, shuffles, pivots. Lots. Locks or vital strikes become manifest.

  • @theistscangotohell
    @theistscangotohell 11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The trouble with sparring, is that you get used to the rule-set of your style. Most styles set very unrealistic limitations in the interests of safety. I've fought with black belts from many different styles, and been surprised how unable they are to get out of the groove of their style's way of fighting.

    OH. I just commented on another Aikido video about - an ultraquick and thoroughly disorienting pop to the mandibular joint that could only be seen in slo mo, done from behind - and here I see it done from the front. I feel like I learned something... go for the quick stun, and build on it. It would also tend to explain why I've seen a few professional fighters taken down this way report that they can't remember how it happened, they just found themselves on the ground. It appears slow and methodical because it's timed to the victims reflexive responses while in a drunken freefall, and we're not actually trying to kill him, but contain him. Cool.

    Essentially Aikido Can*/will work very well as a self defense measure, to most attackers, it´s quite simple - Most attackers will not expect the evasive moves, and one will have a moment to escape or to take control. To fight with it, you need to apply/train/master other styles and techniques (kicking, hitting, etc.) - Aikido is made for fighting - One can´t go in a ring and surprise a fierce and well trained fighter (perhaps once) + you can´t really attack. *Persons ability vs situation etc.

    This time around, the aggressor does not have his wrists covered....
    Further, if you look closely enough, you realize the Aikido student is only going thru a subconscious dance move ...
    Like a well-practiced F14 pilot, there is no time to think, you only have time to 'react'. Which is precisely what the Aikido student here is doing. In the Aikido student's mind he is not on the street, he is in Dojo and this is just one more dance move!
    ;)

    Aikido is an amazing form of self defense, and this guy shows its real effectiveness when used against a knife. I have studied martial arts and the times when i ended up getting hurt the most was when the other guy was using either Aikido or Jiu Jitsu.

  • @barabinyak

    @brianelectrical Actually, the Aikido tehcniques make you flip by your own, cause of moving your joints to the opposite of what they can, but the point is putting Aikido into practice is very difficult and so many believe it's a bit uneffective. Still, there're very good things to learn from.

    I would recommend Combat Submission Wrestling (see Erik Paulson vids) if there is a certified instructor in your area. It incorporates catch wrestling, judo, bjj, mt, western boxing into one effective system. Or take MMA (usually MT, BJJ, some judo for takedowns, and some western boxing) from a reputable instructor. If you can't find those, try judo or catch wrestling. And always spar against fully resisting opponents (start slow, but speed up with practice), including a lot of wrestlers.

    @WhiteBeltAcademy yes people differ, but try forcing your joints in ways they are not meant to go, I have very flexible shoulders and a wider range of moment in my shoulders compared to most aikido practitioners I trained with. This made little difference to shoulder locks when applied by a experienced practitioner. The just put the lock on harder and moved my shoulder out of my own personal range of movement. sometimes they would question if I was in pain if they had never trained with me.
