    This video was super helpful for me. I had been noticing my cabin smelling like gas/exhaust while idling and the air was set to draw from outside instead of recirculate. So I read some forums and found people having loose spark plugs from the factory. This was my first venture into changing spark plugs, and I was a bit intimidated about how much you had to disassemble the car, but his video showed every step and it only ended up taking 1 hour total. I did have a loose second spark plug (by about 3 rotations), but lucky my threads didn't strip out like some others I have read. Now my car is running smooth and exhaust smell free. Thanks!

      billynick1 That car that I made the video on I totaled in an accident last year.I bought another Honda same exact year make and model fit and my spark plug blew out a month later because I failed to check the spark plugs. I had to replace the whole head. I’m so glad you caught it.

      Original plugs does 160,000kms. Meaning it's worth it, will be changing after a long while. I have had an ex Japan Honda fit that I have never changed plugs until probably today that I intend to change them. Bought it while on about 60k kms, today it has about 165k kms and I felt the car lose power suddenly. So I have been using the first ever plugs to be installed in the car from manufacturer... So its still a good deal

    No need for armor all, it will only speed up deterioration of the rubber. On the other hand, putting a bit of dialectric grease on the top of the spark plugs is a good idea to prevent corrosion and to maintain good electrical contact.

    • @boomerguy9935
      @boomerguy9935 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dielectric grease is by definition, insulating. It is good for protecting from corrosion and for sealing rubber to rubber. However, do NOT apply it on metal to metal because it insulates and will interfere with the conductivity.

    Thanks for this tutorial it was invaluable. What a pain having to remove all those things just to get at the spark plugs, but it didnt end up taking too much time. Hour and a half including a bit of fiddling around.
    #!#! Attention everyone with this model of Honda Fit! Check your spark plugs, apparently its a common issue for them to be loose. I had two cylinders with loose spark plugs, it was causing an exhaust/gas smell in the cabin. The plugs could blow out and cause serious engine damage!

      Chris Broad I totaled my first Honda fit which is the one in the video about a year ago. So I bought another 2009 used and the spark plug blew out on me before I had a chance to change the plugs and coil’s. So I replaced the head with one from a junkyard that I rebuilt myself

    Awesome video! I just followed it to get access on my sisters '09. One thing to note, I used a sharpie to mark the stud on the wiper transmission and wiper arm to get them perfect again. Also, you can easily reach behind the engine once it is cool and change the coils/plugs WITHOUT taking anything off! You can see where you need to go in this video, and then just go by feel.

      The only problem with that is when you put the spark plugs in you want to torque them down.
      Hondas are notorious for the plugs backing out shooting out of the head and stripping it at the same time. That happened to me.

      @@hippo780 Thanks for the advice. In your experience, do you think it's worth changing the transmission fluid in my 2010 civic, se i v-tec with 90k miles? It's probably never been changed, but it works just fine. As I know it's got a sealed gearbox. Many people say in forums, that once it's not been changed regularly, then it's best to just leave it as it is, otherwise after a change it will leak and develop other issues.

    Thanks for the video. I hate how newer cars smash everything under the hood into tight hard to access areas. You shouldn't have to remove windshield wipers and plastic parts just to change spark plugs. As cramped as I thought engines were in 1990's Civics, I still had direct access to every spark plug.

    I just did this work last night on a MkII USDM Fit Sport Manual. There is no need to remove the wipers and cowl. Removing the battery and airbox gives enough room. I don’t know why everyone is removing so much stuff, presumably the Honda workshop manual tells you it’s needed, but it isn’t.

After having the dealer rethread the hole, and all 4 plugs replaced, today I found 3 of the plugs not torqued to 15 pounds. What size torque wrench would work in such small area? If not for your video the spark plugs would not have been checked. Thank you and God bless you, and all that post these helpful tutorials.

    • @alsmith1210
      @alsmith1210  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      robospa first you have to remove the windshield wipers, the cowl,
      and the wiper motor plate.
      Then you’ll have enough room to torque it down. I use a cheap Pittsburgh torque wrench 3/8 drive and a short extension with the spark plug socket. There’s more than enough room once you remove the cowl and the sill.
      Just to let you know Pittsburgh torque wrench from Harbor freight tools is just as good as the snap on. I’ve looked on TH-cam where they’ve done reviews on both in real tests, even though it’s made in China it’s extremely accurate it came in second place next to snap on

    Totally unnecessary. Yes I'm a retired professional mechanic but I changed all four on my 09 Fit with just my left arm coming around from the left including #4 I didn't unplug the coils and there was room. It's all done by feel. a 1/4" ratchet with a 10MM socket and a 3/8 ratchet, extension and a spark plug socket. Nothing technically difficult about it. Taking all that other wiper stuff off would not have been necessary.

    • @alsmith1210
      @alsmith1210  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      seaswirl79 if you are professional mechanic then all that work is unnecessary, for most of the people on here are not professional mechanics most of them would end up pulling on the electrical connector on the coil and then getting a misfire when they’re all done and not even knowing how to track it down. For guys like you and I yes, we can do it that way but they can’t.

    After how many miles on this car do the plugs need to be changed? Thanks

    • @alsmith1210
      @alsmith1210  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nick Schmaus Usually about 80 to 90,000 miles. If you’re still getting over 30 miles per gallon I would wait until you hit 90k or til you end up getting a engine code stating your miss firing on a coil.
      80,000 I wouldn’t do it anything later than 95 at the most.
      Change the coils and the plugs at the same time.
      I get my coils from AutoZone lifetime replacement so as long as you keep the receipt and they have you on their computer you can bring them in 80,000 miles later can get all new free ones.
