This scene was one of the best in the series. You can see the pain in the Queen Mother's face. For a brief moment, she was treated normally and had a few hours of normalcy. It was something she probably cherished. Thus the downside of Royalty. Well-played.
Don't you believe it! The Queen Mother loved the adulation and deference she was paid as royalty. She would never have wanted someone to NOT know who she was.
Not the queen mother. That was The Queen, Elizabeth II.
@@odysseusrex5908 The Queen Mother was a stickler for royal etiquette and tradition although her public persona was that of the down-to-earth noblewoman. She knew how to play the crowd. It's not impossible that a scene played out like this one, but very unlikely anyone would not recognise who she was. Pearl Platt would have certainly had something to say!!!
@james, ? Elizabeth was known for turning down Bertie's marriage proposals several times because she had apprehensions on becoming a member of the royal family.
It’s been thoroughly documented that the queen mother was an utter snob and a generally awful person.
I like how he says "why didn't you say anything" then hesitates and says "Ma'am" as it dawns on him shes the Queen mother.
He cared about his place and wanted it left in hands that would invest in its legacy. That is a true gentleman.
Incredible acting! Her face said everything when there was nothing she could say. For a moment, she was human, the next instant again the Queen Mother. They say the crown is heavy...
"I didn't know she was a queen. I even went down on the price because I thought she was just a nice widowed lady who dreamed all her life about a little castle by the sea." Wonderful generosity!
It is such a sad scene. Had she been a commoner she would have had a happy second marriage and not been alone for a half of a century
@frekenbok2755 100 years ago Spanish queen mother remarried her commoner lover and gave birth to many new babies AND played political roles. Well, a private marriage. Logically no problem. Only that her new husband treated her as his wife.
@@tinavino1575 well, actually it wasn't quite like that, she remarried really quicky after her uncle-husband died, while both her children were small, and started having children that were quickly taken away but such bad secret was bound to be found, and it did. She was basically shipped off, lost touch with her daughters who were spoiled and poorly raised for the roles they were expected to play.
Not the happiest story, she found love at a personal level with her new husband and children but lost her children.
If she'd been a commoner she probably would have died at 65
@@MikelosMThe NHS never would have gotten her to 102, that's for sure. She would have died on a waiting list.
@@ednorton47 For all its faults, the UK (of which everybody is covered at least mostly by NHS) still has a median life expectancy more than 3 years higher than the US despite comparable lifestyle factors...
I loved this touching scene and in fact all scenes with the great Victoria Hamilton, a wonderful actress.
The tale of the nobleman (or woman) who disguises himself as a commoner only to find true love is well established...
ESTABLISHED, not STABLISHED.
@@mjremy2605 oh troll, cut your BS
She truly loved her husband before he died, I wonder if this was the first man to treat her like a normal person since then, and whether he reminded her of her husband?
@@mjremy2605 sorry, not a native speaker here. Already edited.
@@vassalagem1 Ignore them. There are pedantic folks who troll TH-cam comments only to quench their own inferiorities through putting down others. @mjremy2605 knew perfectly well what you meant, as did we all. Carry on and enjoy your day.
I've never noticed it before but... they're right in front of each other. As soon as he realizes who she is the camera frames them separately and creates so much distance between them but just before... and then when she takes a step closer... they must be a foot apart from each other
The cinematography in this series has been amazing... The mirror work alone is stupendous.
Very well-observed! Her true status creates a distance between her and the old man. They went from two equal scottish people to a royal and a subject!
Great acting by Victoria Hamilton! The best of the Queen Mothers

Shortly after she died, I saw an interview with a member of her protective detail. He told about one time, when she was staying at Balmoral, he had accompanied her out for a hike in the woods. They happened on an American couple who engaged them in friendly conversation, obviously having no idea who they were talking to. She told them that she was from London but had, "A vacation place just over the hill." When she told them she had been coming up there for many, many years, they jokingly asked if she knew the queen. Without missing a beat, she said, "Well, I've never met her, but Dick has, frequently." The Americans were very excited to meet someone who knew the queen, and asked the nice lady if she might take their picture with him. She was happy to do so. Dick persuaded them to also have their picture taken with the nice lady. After saying their goodbyes, as the Americans walked on down the path, Queen Elizabeth remarked, "I'd love to be a fly on the wall when they show those pictures to their friends back home."
no that was the queen not the queen mother
That was about the late queen, not her mother.
And imagine either of them talking about a "vacation" home. Or a "hike". Not in a million years
@@susannehunter4017 The late Queen often enjoyed long walks in the Scottish highlands (as does the present King.) She also had a very dry and droll sense of humor. So yes, I can imagine it quite well.
@@JWRogersPShave you seen the youtube footage of the bicyclists encountering a solo King Charles walking alone back to Balmoral? It’s amazing
What’s particularly heartbreaking is she was never allowed to find another partner after her husband died. If your husband was a King, you never stop being a royal widow. Very cruel - especially as she had decades and decades in front of her.
Well actually if a formerly royal spouse remarries they take the title of the new spouse. It just didn't make sense to remarry in her case.
She could have been Queen of Norway
In those days and at that age very few women would want to go looking for another spouse especially if she had financial resources of her own
You really have to look it through the lens of people of that time. A widow really didn't have much desire in the 40s 50s and 60s to be remarried after spending so much of their heart and soul and especially pain when you look at queen elizabeth the mother not the second she only had 17 years on the throne and she wasn't queen Victoria it's rather historic that since queen Mary came back out of seclusion she really had to re birth her entire life her home her status her position. And your right a dowager queen which is what she legally was could have had so much freedom in choosing her next partner. Alot of women in that time especially the religious ot wasn't that un heard of in both the church of england and catholism if you were a young widow with no children you beame a nun. My father who passed in 2010 and my parents were both Americans and my father made an excellent point when my mom died he was preparing to become a priest and he waa born in the 40s! He told me "if i can't have your mother i don't want another bride ill devote what ever time i have left to god" But the monarchs especially look at the crown basically a calling from god as their life the husband's and wife's are advisors and they do love them but they really do surrender their soul to the crown.
@@rogerfielding1117 True but that wasn't a realistic option. She was past childbearing age and the British govt most likely would not have allowed it. This wasn't medieval Europe 😅
This was a great episode. Margaret discovering the dangers of soaring too high. Her mama finding momentary peace and happiness as a plain Scotswoman. Elizabeth finding herself truly envious of her sister's looks and popularity.
What a dear, sweet scene. So very, very British.
Been waiting for this to be uploaded for ages, wonderful scene very sweet.
Truth or fiction I still think this was just precious❤❤❤
truth, she bought the castle
@@nikiryan8648 I mean the exchange between the Queen Mother and the gentleman
I just found it very sweet
“You’d have doubled the price.”
£200 would still be a pretty good price for that.
that's the joke
Beautiful music plays towards the end of the scene!!
Frankly speaking this scene is my favourite in episode 1, even Queen Mary’s curtsy is behind it.
Such a touching scene. I love and appreciate good acting.
I like to imagine she came back and asked him out.
I was pretty sure Hamilton was going to get an Emmy nomination.really disappointed when she didn't.
The idea that an aristocratic, land-owning Scotsman, of the same generation as the Queen Mother, would fail to recognise her is completely absurd.
So sad god bless her xx
This scene reminds me of the climax of Roman Holiday. A mini Roman Holiday in itself.
One would hope that the Queen Mother would have accepted him as a friend and invited him for a visit. Tea or a relaxing walk by the sea. Its sad to complain about the isolation of being in a special position and then when someone does treat you as a normal person its not nurtured as a special friendship. After all, she loves the house and no one is more knowledgeable of the house than the person that sold it to her. They both share the love of the house and the sea and the peacefulness of the location. But then with the royals they might have had a friendship and the public might never have known as a way to protect both their privacy.
No this was just a special moment out of time
Meeting again would not have been the same
From that moment on it would had been a subject meeting Royalty
No gentleman would have kept his hat on in front of HM the Queen Mother
Major Imbert Terry, they just found his car in a barn in Caithness could have got a castle more like Mey. He offered her it for nothing but she insisted on paying.
For me this is one of the most poignant scenes in the entire series.
😢😢😢😢😢
I doubt she paid him a fair price.
No sorry ma’am you misheard. 100 million pounds I said.
She should've gone of a date!
With all her fortune, I’m sure she paid him more than 100 pounds?
she was Scottish remember. If she farted dogs would get summoned.
She frequently spent more than her income. QEII was known for paying off her debts every year.
Did he just say “miles down the road”? I thought only Americans used Miles
You thoughht wrong. The UK uses miles.
It's called imperial system for a reason.
The British still use miles for distance/ travel/ speed (whilst travelling)
By KM, CM and MM when measuring things and in some instances distance/ travel
Where did you even think the Americans got it from in the first place?
What is this horrible music at the end?
Scene City outro music

what is the point of this scene?
That the Queen Mother couldn't have others to treat her like a normal woman if they found out.
GBP 100 is less than what you pay to stay one night in one room at this castle today. And she paid with public funds too. Nice life, living parasitically off the taxpayers.
and yet we make money from the Monarchy
Illegals are " living parasitically off the taxpayers" not the Monarchy
And we can go and visit there any time we want as it’s part of the Crown trust. People pay weddings for it… it’s paid itself back over and over. So, shh.
The castle was in shambles, and she oversaw its complete refurbishment, thus restoring a valuable historical landmark. It's been open for public use for decades and has increased tourism and commerce to the area. All in all, she did a good thing for the country. I'm sure you'll find a thousand other opportunities to virtue signal, but you chose the wrong topic this time.
Contrary to your belief, public money spent to benefit the public is not a bad thing.
A friend of my sister was a private chef to HM The Queen for 5 years & gosh, didn’t he regale us with some fascinating stories of what it was like working for the Royal Family & what they were REALLY like behind closed doors & away from public gaze. Fascinating!
I wld love 2 hear some of thoes stories !!!!
