The sacred art of foraging

- Hello! This month is the month of foraging. As I'm uploading this video, it is the full moon. I am calling it, the moon of the colored trees. I know this is a very special moon and that this season does not last long. Foraging is something that I began doing for my art when I attended school at the Burren College of Art in Ireland and I have been doing it and incorporating it into my art ever since. I wanted to make a video about it to show that it's not just about collecting supplies from nature, it's far deeper than that. It's a sacred practice and a spiritual practice. This is why I am so in awe of and inspired by the indigenous people of the Americas and the art they make and have made. I don't really know how to put this into words, so I'll stop now.

I reference the short film "The Great Kind Mystery" by artist Ella Morton.

Thank you to the late Alice Ladas who died recently at age 102 for her pink tights.
The earth has always had the ability to support life and humans forever, because it was sustainable the way it was set up. It was never meant to support an Economy or a corporate mentality. where everything is a commodity or a resource to be used bought and sold.
COLONIALISM IS THE ENEMY AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN but...
This ish BS!!!We are one economy, because, some of us are brave enough to go to business!!!
pardon?
When you live your truth, no one can take your power.
This is how we were built to live
'Lovely Maid, in the forest you go, from the mother a gift, her colours, your clothes and hair, it's all from her, the richness, it never stops growing - inside of us, we mirror, sun and storm, rainbow and shadow, misty morngings, mystic flows whereever we are with her, connected, forever in paradise. she's the wonder and you're her child. breath, we are one, holy bond, mother and child, so sweet to see the children play on the ground. so sweet to hear the children giggle and laugh, sweet melody, soothing, harmony. pure love. peace. sweet symphony.' by me
Thank you for this video, it inspires me ! Much love to you Suzanne Joy! Foraging is so satisfying, magical and JOYful!!! Collecting things is a natural need which all of us have since we are little! Mother earth gifted me a lot of treasures this year, apples, tomatoes, herbs, sunflowers, rasperries (still gifting!), ohhhhh the list is long and we are so thankful every day for all the gifts! I love our mother, she is so great!
Quite beautiful
I can relate to the feeling of being in a rush when the season of harvesting comes along. I live in the north of Sweden and the season of foraging and harvest is quite short here. But there is also something so calming with taking the time to be outside and gather nutishing things from nature.
I was watching an Erin Parsons victorian era makeup vid and they used dried/powdered walnut leaves for eyeshadow.
Also, never knew you could use sumac leaves for ink, was always just told the seeds were survival fruits. What a useful plant.
I use the sumac for the tannins that it has to prepare cellulose fibers for natural dying.
videos like these on youtube deserve to have so much more views.... watching these just makes me feel something beautiful inside... i don't even know how to describe it... the feeling just makes me feel so hopeful and wild...
aww! Thank you!
very peaceful and wholesome 😌 I love how you express the interconnectivity with the earth that we have 🏵🏵🏵
thanks!

Beautiful Suzanne, thank you. Yes, It's a sacred practice and a spiritual practice. 🙏💞
yes. I agree!
I love this… so pure.. so authentic… such a wonderful energy 🌱 thank you Suzanne 🙏
Thank you!
I share your sense of urgency in late July because my heritage apple tree is producing tons of fruit right now. This is also the time of my county's Studio Tour and my biggest source of income from my work. Each project could take up all my time. But, gradually, I've found people who want to share in the apple bounty. So I give away lots of them. Those that go bad before I can get to them, I scatter far and wide as I drive to various places. The applesauce I will eat in the winter, but I hope that someone will be harvesting apples from the trees I've planted years after I'm gone.
How I love your lifestyle. Thank you for sharing it with us.
In my academy life, here in Europe, I was introduced by mt teacher to this brown paint called bister, the one that you have! I bought a small bottle of it by its burnt form!!!I love using it! It's almost "holy"!
I agree. It's so beautiful to use. so special.
Awesome thanks very much from South Africa ❤
thanks!
Stunning view from your place I really enjoyed the orange mountain low, thank you ❤ I think i'd really like it there
This was so sweet. Like a taste of early fall and the practices one can do to gather resources for the Winter. ❤
thanks!
I like your mindset philosphy and only find real peace when immersed in nature.
very peaceful and wholesome 😊
Enjoyed the video. Gorgeous setting.
NIce!
I just came across your video and I am so interested in do things like this. I gather walnuts and let them dry and get the smear out. Last year the squirrels got them all.
I want to make my own tintures and salves and I am learning slowly but surely. Keep up the good work and enjoy. Hugs and angels
Awesome video Suzanne, very nicely composed. Love the still shot of red light and dark shadow on the hills. Will have to try a black walnut preparation sometime. Peace
thanks!
"Modestly lowering her eyelashes, the maiden replied, “I wish you and your son happiness, but there is not enough money on the whole Earth that could buy a father’s garden, where each twig reaches out with love to the person who raised it. Money cannot buy the loyalty of a horse that played with your child as a foal. Your homestead will bring money. The homestead of my beloved will bring a sufficiency and love.”
Anastasia "Ringing Cedars of Russia"

Your Heavenly Father is your provider. Nature i.e. God’s creation declares the evidence of his existence. This is the reason we feel happier in nature because it reminds us who we really are and where we come from. I encourage to read the Bible and know the Truth about your purpose and existence on this earth. ❤
Ahhh beautiful ❤ new subscriber here 😍

I love that i recognized some of what you were picking- the sumac really caught my eye!
Oh yeah cool! Sumac is used for tannins in natural dying. Maybe you already know that. :)
❤❤❤
Beautiful video ❤
Thank you!!
Thankyou
you're welcome.
Very good video
hi Suzanne, love the video! I moved to upstate SC about a year ago and starting to connect with my inner self again. I'm looking for willow tree bark for a spell, where is a good area in upstate SC to find this? Thank you and Blessed Be.
My people have lived this way for generations this is not new
I get the intent, but I also would like to know what you are making with the nature you picked.
Black walnut ink is for everything one would use ink for, sumac is for preparing cellulose fibers for natural dying, and goldenrod is for pigment for natural dying. thanks!
Were u cooking the black walnuts? Does it make removing husks easier? Whats your method, if u feel like sharing.?
making black walnut ink is really easy. I usually just put the whole black walnut into a pot of water and boil it. Sometimes I smash them with a hammer first and put only the husks in. Have fun!
