Good talk. However, Narcissus did not die because he fell in love with himself; rather, because he fell in love with the image of himself (reflected in the water). It makes quite of a difference...

the reason he liked the image is because he loved himself.

Rimbaud brought me here :). Wonderful presentation to which I´d add only that the alternative to falling in love is being in love.. but whether one can be that without falling.. I don´t really know. I´ve experienced myself falling into my body and it felt great. I don´t see also that people are afraid to love in real, but it´s true that it seems to become irrelevant these days for most because of mix of personal reasons and collective influences .. I´m saying this as professional emotional and mental health counsellor. PS. People who enjoy being alone and going to movies alone etc- it was not meant to take it personally, it´s just a collective trend what he was talking about, not about "loners" who enjoy that (myself included :))

Falling... The term smacks a tad theological, but it's not meant that way. I think it's about losing control deliberately.

This presentation has some decent observations but doesn't make any unique insight and actually oversimplifies the matter. I commend Srecko for exploring the field of love as it could use much more investigation, but I hope his book on the subject delves more deeply.

haha Horvat, the FALL will follow as soon as they show up at the date, question is if these type of people are able to fall or if they would rather subcontract the fall itself, by sending a clone copy of themselves. That would be the proper dystopian thing (and the first thing Zizek would immediately come up with).

    • @kracejiciAlchymista

Yeah probably the first thing on Zizeks mind : D

the moment you meet ther person you are "falling in love". setting up the date is perfectly fine. like on speed dating. It just an easier way of meeting people. who cares if the story of meeting someone is not special and cool. it is important THAT you find someone and not the how! most of this new tecnologies are really making the process much easier and are wonderful tools!
this guy is putting a lot of things in one bottle and tries to come up with something that makes him sound as a romantic outsider. Everyone is against Selfies, everyone is against being a narcissist-but i bet this guy is either really big on social media or ignores them and is very vocal about his ignoring them! The ego is very tricky!

Over and above the excellent points in the talk, I'd say phenomena like 'masturdating' feed in to the system described by Shoshana Zukoff (who was on Diem TV) as 'surveillance capitalism'.

Kind of sad that he feels so insecure that he needs to shame people who are comfortable going to the cinema on their own.

    • @abbasidanny

I don't think he intended to shame anyone, he was just pointing out the trend of 'masturdating', and not everyone who goes to the cinema on their own is 'masturdating'. Rather, he was criticising a narcissistic culture whereby people will justify to themselves going to the cinema alone by thinking of the experience as a 'date with oneself'.

you know nothing about Srecko if you think this. He's someone who likes the idea of falling in love, of giving oneself fully to something whether its a cause or to someone else, to such an exttent that for a moment you lose yourself. People no longer support causes because it will harm them financially, he worries that this selfisness will soon extend to the intimate sectors of our lives. this is why sreck, a political activist, finds it necessary to talk about love. He doesnt want us to be robots and you think it makes him weak...

However interesting and animating they are, both of them Srecko and Slavoj... are pathetically influenced by Badieu, and it is not even funny anymore... it's alarming and pathetic. Maybe someone should say something about their ideological stance once in a while/
