    I feel better now. I thought I was killing my plants. I do have one that has kept its leaves for several months and still looks great. The other two lost leaves and I tossed. I am happily subscribing to your channel Thanks!

    Wow! I wish I had known this sooner. I had a beautiful alocasia which was doing so well for months and then its leaves all died and dropped off. I was so perplexed as to why it happened because I hadn't changed my care routine for it. Anyway, I assumed it was dead and threw the bulb and soil away but now I know it was just resting. The good news is I bought a new one today so I won't make that mistake again. 🙂🌱💕

    Wow... did not know that. I have one, it's my absolute pride and joy. So much so, I bought another for a friend as a gift, but then realised the new one I bought was sick, so decided to keep it and try to bring it back to life. It died and I threw the bulb away! I wish I had kept it now!!!

      Mine keeps giving me new leaves, and now I see this interesting little growth poking out of the stem, which is exciting but I'm on here trying to figure out what it is.... if you have any idea please let me know?

      @@lysduchamp Lily, those little growths you mention are offshoots from the main plant that will grow into new plants. Cover them with soil to protect them and they will produce roots of their own. Good luck with it!

    Thank you for this. I was in tears thinking I killed my plant by repotting it. I live in Canada and we are entering Autumn so I think that’s why my leaves are dying off. At least I hope that’s the reason.

  • @AdriCr4ft
    @AdriCr4ft 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Hmmm that’s quite sad tho... does it mean they all die at some point? Funny how no website selling plants actually explains this. A lot of people would probably end up thinking they killed their plant and chucked it away.
    This would be me.
    I ordered an alocasia poli and I am patiently awaiting it. I fell in love with its leafs and so I decided to learn more about it.
    I think this is also the first video where this information was given.
    Thanks :)

      We're so happy to know our video helped and agree that this information isn't always readily available! Yes, at some point they will go into a period of dormancy but it's all part of their cycle and they'll grow back. Alocasia pollys are lovely, hope yours arrives soon and in good health :)

      gardenstead it arrived looking beautiful but not perfect. Lost 4 leafs on the way here and some of the tips were dry.
      I checked up on it today after leaving it in my bright bathroom as I thought maybe would be the best for it for now (maybe I’m wrong) and the 2 smaller leafs that arrived intact are turning yellow. Their tips were already yellow but now it’s gone to the middle of the leaf if I make myself clear enough sorry I’m not very good at describing it lol
      Would this have been over watered?
      The soil arrived moist and the plants that had died were soggy and wet. Their stalks were soggy and mushy.
      Is there any tips you could kindly give me regarding that?
      I also didn’t repot it because I was terrified I would damage it
      Edit: just thought i would also mention I’m just terrified the yellow will also start to appear on the larger beautiful leafs
      Thank you so much for your kind reply, stay safe :)

    • @gardenstead
      @gardenstead  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@AdriCr4ft Hi Filipa, good thinking with moving it to a bright spot in your home. Because the stalks are mushy and soggy don't water it again until the top inches of your soil dries out. If you're concerned with overwatering, we highly recommend that your pot has a drainage hole. Your sign to stop watering is when water starts to drip out the drainage hole. Check out this article we wrote www.gardenstead.com/what-you-dont-know-about-your-alocasia-polly/ it'll be a good reference for you moving forward. Hope this helps, stay safe :)

    I understand that first one... I have grow lights on my peace lily and they too start to yellow just on the parts closes to the grow light.

    • @gardenstead
      @gardenstead  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to hear that. Is the yellow leaf very close to the light? Grow lights aren't usually very strong or hot, but it may be good to rotate the plant every day or so and maybe even set it back from the light a bit. Good luck!

    Glad to know this as well. Curious if the seasons of the year have anything to do with when the leaves begin to die, and the bulb go into a rest? I'm in southeast Texas, and mine has only two leaves left. When I bought it in the summer it was a well and established plant with close to 10 leaves. I transplanted it to a bigger pot not long ago, and discovered quite a few baby bulbs all around it. I'm SO excited, and hope they develop well, and maybe by next spring I'll have a lush plant again. They are so beautiful! Thanks again for your helpful video.

    • @gardenstead
      @gardenstead  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Excited for you, Ana! You should have babies and mamma growing next spring. Alocasias go through a period of dormancy in the winter and then resume their growth in the spring. Glad you enjoyed the video!

    Does the Alocasia plant flower?

  • @mariocean808
    @mariocean808 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I'm so confused now. I've seen youtube videos of huge, mature Alocsias that people have owned for years. If the leave keep falling and new ones growing, how can they grow to be fully mature plants?

    • @bindaegari1660
      @bindaegari1660 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Once they mature they'll come to hold more leaves (7+). These will slowly replace themselves. Plants with dozens of leaves are usually multi-planted.

    • @chloeivan1296
      @chloeivan1296 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a Polly, not too big and not too small…it’s been good for about over 6 months now and just pushed out a new leaf. I did take some out and tried to propagate new plants from the bulbs and they died. My Polly is still fairly small so I’m confused as well.

    • @gardenstead
      @gardenstead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good question! Fully mature Alocasias have developed large bulbs that store a lot of food for the next year's growth. In tropical and subtropical areas, they are perennial plants that lose leaves occasionally as they grow. In temperate regions, they are grown as annuals outdoors. People bring in their bulbs over the winter, then replant them in the spring. They grow well as houseplants, provided they have the right growing conditions.

    • @gardenstead
      @gardenstead  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chloeivan1296 It should be a great plant if it has the conditions that it loves. Make sure there is plenty of bright, indirect light, lots of humidity (you can use a pebble tray or humidifier), and warmth. Once it's growing in these conditions, it should push out more leaves.

  • @nefertarilucas2960

    My Alocasia Polly only has 2 leaves for the longest while. Why is that.

    • @gardenstead
      @gardenstead  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It may need some fertilizer, or it may need different growing conditions. Alocasias need warmth (65-85 degrees), lots of humidity, and bright, indirect light. They don't like fluctuations in temperature like cold or hot drafts. You can use a pebble tray with water or a humidifier to boost the humidity and keep it in a bright, warm room out of the sun's direct rays. Water it when half of the soil is dry, and then allow the water to run through the pot and out the drainage holes. Discard any excess water. Good luck! It should develop more leaves with the conditions it loves.

    Grow lights can burn plant leaves. I’ve tried 4 different kinds, at all different distances. And my neon pothos gets burned EVERY SINGLE TIME, along with my cebu blue.

    So my question is how do those leaves get so big if they die off every season ?

    • @gardenstead
      @gardenstead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The leaves grow partly from the energy they've stored in their bulbs, and partly from the food they manufacture in their leaves. The size of the variety's leaves is also determined by the plant's DNA.

  • @joyleavitt9255

    I have had grown lights burn a pothos overnight

    • @gardenstead
      @gardenstead  ปีที่แล้ว

      Pothos plants definitely don't like direct sunlight but the rays from grow lights usually aren't strong enough to burn plants. If your plant is too close to an intense grow light, it can burn, though, especially if it's left on all the time. It's best to turn off the grow lights at night so that the plants can get a period of darkness.

    • @gardenstead
      @gardenstead  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Desert roses are so pretty! They need full sun, or as much as you can give them in the house, warm temperatures, and evenly moist soil, but never soggy. During the fall and winter, you can cut back on the water since they will become dormant. Here is some good information on the Desert Rose: www.thespruce.com/grow-desert-rose-plants-indoors-1902974
