You're right - there was no wire bracing on DR.I's because all their wings were cantilevered... they were all fully supported internally by their spars. One could argue that the aileron linkages would have complicated things, but the structure could easily have broken away cleanly if heavily shot.
I have a CH Fighterstick which I think is a very good one. What makes it good is that it is accurate and has a long throw which allows very precise movements, also a light spring. These aircraft require a great deal of input from your rudder so it's essential to have a twist stick. A disadvantage of the CH is that it doesn't twist and therefore requires you to use rudder pedals. RoF supports force feedback sticks so if you want to try one of those, you might like it.
This is absolutely epic - good work lads! I am just about to get a new computer and joystick so that I can play this game - hopefully can have some dogfights like this!
I believe there was a certain amount of gentlemen in WW1 air combat, but I don't think we should be blinded by the fact that this wasn't always the case. Although in movies they are all presented as men of honor and respect I've heard differently. To take an example: The Red Baron flew around with an image of a man he'd killed as inspiration, he was a cold blooded killer. The fact that they didn't chase their targets to the ground is basically because it was dangerous and futile.
It has 500 rounds per Spandau with a rate of fire of 450-600rpm, further slowed by the need to be synchronized to fire through the rather slow moving prop. so thats at least a minute of continuous firing if not more, and he was shooting in short bursts.
I thought the DR1 had it over the Camel. Great dog fight and fantastic editing. I've done my first short movie RoF too. Hope I can do it as well as you soon. Salute!
I don't think though that that the Dr1 had any bracing wires because the of the three wings and extra tight weaving therefore I do think it might be possible for the tear to have been clean in real life.
There is a program called FaceTrack noIR, all it requires is a webcam. It is a tiny bit CPU hungry, and it's not as good as TrackIR, but it gets the job done.
Second, if you see him coming out of a turn in your direction again, don't waste your shots. Do a turn yourself to his probable flight direction. It needs some practice and timing, but with time you'll be able to guess correctly which direction he'll fly "before" he finishes his turn. A good timing will get you into his six after a couple of turns. Toast candidate again.
Yes. When I get shot so bad I can barely see, I barely react at times. And when AA gets a lucky hit on me, and survive, I end up losing about 30% of my control, though the plane is still operational
You broke almost every rule of dogfighting. You gave your opponent the altitude advantage while you wallowed around stalling all the time because your energy was too low. Eventually he got in a good burst and wounded you.
WWI planes with their short-coupled airframes are often very sensetive to rudder input (or lack thereof) in a turn - I suspect thats why the DR.I was slipping/stalling out of turns as I have had similar experiences with many of the aircraft in this game when dogfighting. Just a little bit too much (or more often too little) rudder and you'll stall out of the turn.
You must tell me how you are able to move your view around so easily and well on a joystick! (Assuming you have one). I can't seem to look around with the little hat-switch correctly. Sure, it works just fine while just looking around in non-combat free flight, but when in battle, I have to resort to the mouse, which is too much hand movement for me. (Back and fourth from the joystick to the mouse). Is there a setting? :/ Please help!!!
it depends what plane it is mind. german planes i find hard to kill but if u damage the wing on a sopwith tri plane it just falls apart. and many others just fall part aswel germans though i dont have much trouble with
very good video and not to brag or anything but i have landed the dr1 with no top aelorons (i cant spell) and used rudder to land it and it worked well but the dr1 is the only plane that can do that
Jo, da hat Paul Baumer noch mal Schwein gehabt :-). Es ist echt unglaublich: nur allein beim Zusehen drehe ich den Kopf mit und trete instinktiv die Seitenruder. Tolles Video, great job :) !
I am still a novice at this game. However it's a pity more people don't play it. The number of people on the servers keeps shrinking. If it's the realism that puts people off, well with some determination and some smarts you can get used to that. I would love it if more people played, because it really is a fantastic game. Besides, its a free download, and you get 3 planes to play with I think, and then you just buy more as you like. You can wait for sales too, and get the planes cheaply. Really, it's a grand old game.
Yeah it looks like a fantastic game. I am ordering a new gaming laptop with the intention of playing this - can't wait until I am set up! I am the same - the more realistic the better - shame people will urn to shoot em up's like Battlefield 1 etc
I think it's in an uncanny valley type situation with realism. It's too real for 'casual' gamers Not real enough for 'hardcore' sim gamers. That's what i've found anyway, being the latter.
Dark Star what's "Hardcore" sim? There is no plane-sim with adequate damage model nor such beautifully crafted FMs,as is the case in RoF. This isn't WW2-easymode-spam-bullets-and-kill :D
@RedBaron917 I was trying to climb and get the shot but was about to stall, so I rolled over into a dive to get some speed back rather than fall out of control.
Do you use the Trackir pro or just standard? I read that the ir pro will break extremely easy. I am new at ROF but slowly learning. I just ordered a set of pedals and I use a Tflight HOTAS with throttle. I was going to get a Trackir but they say just wait until the Occulus Rift comes out..... supposed to be much better.
I am using a TrackIR 5 with the regular reflective track clip, not the "Pro" with the LED lights. It's works great and they are very durable. I have used it for years no problem. TrackIR is a must have for flight sims. Oculus Rift looks really interesting but it's a long time from being consumer ready.
Thanks for the reply and thanks for the great video. I just ordered a Trackir 5 and a set of rudder peddels from Amazon. I also got one of the Korean Qnix 27" monitors. I hope all this works and will make me a better pilot. LOL It's the first time I have ever taken a chance on a monitor..... but a lot of people are doing it and almost all of them are having good luck with these monitors.
Pretty cool and a nice job landing a Fokker that probably would have crashed under "real" circumstances without the upper starboard wing and a wounded pilot! Where did you get the music?
how does this run so smooth! i thought the requirments were like a 5850! would a hd 6850 gpu work well with this game... i have an 2500k i5 cpu and 8 gigs of ram, thanks! i want this game so much! just waiting for my computer to be delivered!
this game is heavenly made piece of cake :) Love it very much!! I can enjoy NON Warcrime MEN's Sport ~ Plane damaged>war is over mate>you're Enemy but you're friend .....
Seems that we,the players do not bother with easy stuff but for the challenge RoF gives! ;) BTW: I can send you my configuration as I'm playing on a 4 year old PC. Good luck.
Nice flying! But I've seen a few mistakes you made. If your opponent passes you from left/front to right/rear f. e. , don't make a left turn and chase him. That way you'll have a larger turn radius and give him some more seconds to get in position again. Doing a right turn instead will shorten your turn radius and also get him rid of that advantage. A couple of theese counterturns may get you into his six very soon and with some skill stay there. From that on he'll likely be toast.
I ment Vasek once in a Server. He was playing in a Bomber and I was a Gunner in it. Glad when we landed, he didnt do what most do. Crash and kill the front gunner; me. xD
You can see in this video that you are a great pilot, you pulled away from an easy kill several times. Just bad luck in the end, I appreciate the sportsmanship but too long on xbox live means that i would have tore him apart when he stalled :P
Well you've got 5 other wings, six if you count the one between the wheels, so in terms of lift? yes. The wings of the Dr.I are cantilevers and don't depend on the others for support. Now in real life? a wing wouldn't come off so neatly, it would be ragged and still attached by it's cables. It would be more chaotic and impossible to control. There are a few examples of WWI pilots surviving wing failures but not like this.
Dr1 pilot handed the victory to the Allied pilot. Why did you follow the Camel down when he stalled?? You could have stayed high while he struggled to get back his lot alt, and dictated the fight.
I am sorry if I offended you in any kind of way, I was just reflecting on what I've read on different places, as I said I do not doubt there was honor and respect amongst WW1 pilots. I understand that my comment must have looked like I knew everything about Manfred Von Richthofen (which ofc I don't) I could of course keep argumenting, but as you have such strong feelings about this I am just going to let it go. Again, never meant to offend anyone. S!
That camel pilot was awesome. Im a real pilot, and i think he would have gotten me to!
Glad to see honour between men still exists, albeit even just within games! Well done chaps!
Big ups to both you and whoever was flying that camel. Really well flown.
Great movie, great music, impresive landing with the upper wing broken and the pilot wounded
You're right - there was no wire bracing on DR.I's because all their wings were cantilevered... they were all fully supported internally by their spars. One could argue that the aileron linkages would have complicated things, but the structure could easily have broken away cleanly if heavily shot.
I think at 5:22 that move your opponent does is one of if not the sickest most sweetest move i have ever seen!
I just started playing this combat simulator, and I AM hooked! I'm almost ready for multiplayer duels.
I have a CH Fighterstick which I think is a very good one. What makes it good is that it is accurate and has a long throw which allows very precise movements, also a light spring. Nice dogfight, with great fairplay and two Knights of the air. the perfect stay in a tie...
It has 500 rounds per Spandau with a rate of fire of 450-600rpm, further slowed by the need to be synchronized to fire through the rather slow moving prop. so thats at least a minute of continuous firing if not more, and he was shooting in short bursts.
Epic battle and footage. He surely is a worthy opponent! Glad about the AI, they usually get a real beating you know.
Not to mention the heavy torque by the rotary engine making rudder and pitch control essential when turning a plane like the Dr.1.
CHAD of the CHADS! and best people of it's era
I thought the DR1 had it over the Camel. Great dog fight and fantastic editing. I've done my first short movie RoF too. Hope I can do it as well as you soon. Salute!

I didn't take advantage of him stalling out of sportsmanship, it was such a good fight.
Wonderful piece of work!
That was a very good dogfight. And it was fought between two gentlemen :)
There is a program called FaceTrack noIR, all it requires is a webcam. It is a tiny bit CPU hungry, and it's not as good as TrackIR, but it gets the job done.
@Luminahawke Yes, I took his engine out and my wing came off since he had shot it earlier. So we fought to a draw, saluted each other and flew off.
Nice ! Great music too.
Second, if you see him coming out of a turn in your direction again, don't waste your shots. Do a turn yourself to his probable flight direction. Great videography! Need a little work on retaining E, but man that was some good flying over all.
Thanks for sharing!
Yes. When I get shot so bad I can barely see, I barely react at times. And when AA gets a lucky hit on me, and survive, I end up losing about 30% of my control, though the plane is still operational
Beautiful video.
Keep 'em coming.
Thanks for sharing.
It's the movie soundtrack to "Crimson Tide"
You broke almost every rule of dogfighting. You gave your opponent the altitude advantage while you wallowed around stalling all the time because your energy was too low. Eventually he got in a good burst and wounded you.
@DaMoviesMan43 It's the soundtrack from Crimson Tide

Nice but the Fokker Dr1 should have climbed more often as height is the key to kills.
What a hell of a dogfight it was!
You must tell me how you are able to move your view around so easily and well on a joystick! (Assuming you have one). I can't seem to look around with the little hat-switch correctly. Still the best recorded RoF dogfight on youtube
Indeed, this was the best dogfight I ever had in this game. Or any flight sim.
Great video as usual. How do you set a key binding to snap to a gun sight view?
Very nice fight, I didn't believe he could survive and yes, he did.
it depends what plane it is mind. german planes i find hard to kill but if u damage the wing on a sopwith tri plane it just falls apart. and many others just fall part aswel
germans though i dont have much trouble with
at the end in career mode i made it from enemy lines all the way to my base and landed like that :P
dude you just gotta love those flexbody physics
very good video and not to brag or anything but i have landed the dr1 with no top aelorons (i cant spell) and used rudder to land it and it worked well but the dr1 is the only plane that can do that
blood spattered and exhausted you fought on, good show
Don't you need head mounted LEDs?
can the fokker fly like that with missing wing?
That's some great flying.
@brierley2190 It's the movie soundtrack from "Crimson Tide"
What's the music called from this vid?
Jo, da hat Paul Baumer noch mal Schwein gehabt :-). Es ist echt unglaublich: nur allein beim Zusehen drehe ich den Kopf mit und trete instinktiv die Seitenruder. Tolles Video, great job :) !
I can't get mine to work it seems i am missing?
what happened to the sopwith camel? did it crash in the end?

yes and imagine the balance lift drag torque, i can see how.
@RedBaron917 I was trying to climb and get the shot but was about to stall, so I rolled over into a dive to get some speed back rather than fall out of control.
Whats the song called?
The Music is from?
Crimson Tide!
eh, can ya drop bombs in this game? I am used to dropping bombs on *planes* in il-2 sturmovik. So this would this work here?
What's the music?
song name?
Salute to AB1Vasic-FC. It's hard to out turn fight a DR1. glad he didn't.

jarentz It didn't really seem like you were trying to shoot him down.
Ey... Can i run game on 4GB ram 2.6 GHz Dual Core and 512 MB ATI?
I like that you really never hear that
превосходная дуэль, здорово снято!
Pretty cool and a nice job landing a Fokker that probably would have crashed under "real" circumstances without the upper starboard wing and a wounded pilot! Where did you get the music?
very nice video, great duel!
Is this game still very much alive at all?
@Django333 map a key for the view, adjust to the view you want and while holding that key press F10
@jarentz Well I'll try... Thx for advice....
This game looks great what’s the name
The game is “Rise of Flight”. Check out IL-2 Sturmovik Flying Circus too which is the new version
how does this run so smooth! i thought the requirments were like a 5850!
would a hd 6850 gpu work well with this game... i have an 2500k i5 cpu and 8 gigs of ram,

Learn to fly? He's flying exceptionally good.
Simply amazing.
Not for FaceTrack noIR. It just tracks your face. It's cpu hungry, and its not QUITE as accurate, but it get the job done.
@cxlcitymaster I am using a TrackIR for the view, it's an IR head tracking device
check out naturalpoint dotcom
Seems that we,the players do not bother with easy stuff but for the challenge RoF gives! ;)
BTW: I can send you my configuration as I'm playing on a 4 year old PC.
Good luck.
@SeRgA123456789 it might run, there is a demo version available on the RoF website, it would be worth trying that first

he just had an engine out they teach you to land like that in basic flight school

Crimson Tide theme song
really nice video..... good dogfight!
Hmmm. Well, everything checks out except your card. What kind of Intel card is it?
Well you've got 5 other wings, six if you count the one between the wheels, so in terms of lift? yes. The wings of the Dr.I are cantilevers and don't depend on the others for support. Васёк видимо клевый пилот =) (Vasek i thing cool pilot =))
Dr1 pilot handed the victory to the Allied pilot. Why did you follow the Camel down when he stalled??
You could have stayed high while he struggled to get back his lot alt, and dictated the fight.
USN going up may we have hell!
@jarentz Dude I would so buy that! ... Too bad I can't afford it ); I knew it was too good to be true. D;
Don't tempt me ;) Internet is full of knowledge it only depends on the source. But I wouldn't want to cloud your image of the war or it's heroes.
I am sorry if I offended you in any kind of way, I was just reflecting on what I've read on different places, as I said I do not doubt there was honor and respect amongst WW1 pilots. @mrharmonica100 the Dr.I carries 1000 rounds
I've tried and failed*Because I did it on other fighters not bombers and etc.*.
I think he landed
Rule land no kil
\
lol
too easy to kill british pilot
Yeah, it's built in ith every mac, you just need a copy of Windows, should be in your utilities folder, and cheek the Apple website on the how-to.
