Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath talks about his ROCK SCENE

  • Before becoming a bass player, Geezer Butler started on a two-string-guitar. He played it for two years before he realized that if you put your finger on the fret of the string your playing, it makes a different sound. He eventually graduated to a six string guitar and started learning Beatles, Kinks and Rolling Stones songs. He formed a band and started playing out. Everywhere they played, they only played once because they were so terrible. Dissalusioned, the singer left the group but Geezer wanted to continue. He saw an ad for a new singer who called himself Ozzy Zigg. In the ad were the magic words, “has own P.A.” Go to RockSceneMagazine.com for more cool interviews.
Geezer met with Ozzy, set up an audition, and Geezer had a new singer. They formed a blues band with a saxophone player and a slide-guitar player. Now, all they needed was a drummer.
Ozzy said he might know someone who might know someone. They went to Tony Iommi’s house and met with Bill Ward. Bill said he would play with them only if Tony could play with them as well. They agreed and began rehearsing. That’s when Geezer realized that they didn’t need a slide-guitar player, a lead guitar player and a rhythm guitar player. So he started tuning down his Fender Telecaster to play the bass lines.
A week of practicing and they booked a gig. On their way to the show, Geezer stopped at a former bass player’s house and borrowed his bass. This would be the first time he would play a bass and it would be in front of an audience. It didn’t go well at all. The band was actually beaten up afterwards.
In the following days, they realized that the saxophone player wasn’t cutting it. Tony refused to play with the slide-guitarplayer, so the two were asked to leave. With the new line-up change, came a new name. They called themselves Earth. However, there was already a band using that name, so they changed their name to Black Sabbath. I met Geezer here in Chicago, when he was touring with his band GZR. He's always been one of my heroes as a bass player. After the gig, we had a nice little chat, and I told him I was a big fan, blah, blah, blah. As I was going to leave him alone, he said, "Do you have to leave? Stick around and meet the other guys." I spent the next hour and a half hanging and drinking with my hero and his band. I'll never forget.

They changed their name to Black Sabbath and started writting songs about destrucción,war and evil. Another thing was that they used to sleep in the day and reherse at night in a castle. Eventually Ozzy couldn't deal with it anymore. Don't know how much of that is true but it was still interesting.

@Barry Manilowa It seems that in England, minorities tend to assimilate moreso than here in the US. Most of what people deem racist here is usually based on culture or class, which tend to tie in with race. Typical black culture here is what some people don't like, not necessarily the race itself. We all love Morgan Freeman here, lol

There's been black race riots in England for several years now. Brixton in London, Toxteth in Lverppol etc. Not to mention the influx of Muslim immigrants which drive the UKIP party to push for Brexit, which discards EU border policies. The English are no different than their American counterparts when it comes to race. They just didn't have domestic slavery as a component of their early history as America did.

why you love black sabbath is because Ozzy Geezer Tony Ward are humble yet down to earth people, Tell me any other band that last 80 years after paranoid and i say black sabbath still best live act, best sound, best front man.

Interesting about the early guitar playing. Since 1970 when I had the first album, I thought he sounded as much a lower
register guitarist counter Iommi, as well as a bass player

I like how right forward the grandfathers of Doom are about enjoying The Beatles music. I don't know about Tony or Bill but Ozzy is also a big fan of them. Cuts right though the egotism of what is found in the metal scene nowadays. Not just makers of awesome music but appreciators as well.

This is the truth even though he has misremembered a few things, but you can see he is reliving what he is saying and the "wait, Ozzy was not home, it was my door he was at was" such a real moment.
So Bill was the one who got busted up north, not Tony. That's wild, that moment was the first time their paths crossed and how significant that ended up being, for them and everyone.
