To those complaining that the interviewer was too rough on Tony, the show is called HARD TALK. He's pressing for answers that many of us would like to hear but would be far too polite to ask. It's his job. And Tony knows it, that's why he's being so polite and answering honestly. It's just the way this show seems to go. Very enjoyable interview overall. Glad he's doing fairly well, hope he keeps getting better.
This is spot on. HARD TALK is a long running BBC News channel series of interviews with major political and cultural figures, which has the specific brief of pushing to the boundaries of conversation. I've seen the HARD TALK interview with Duff McKagan, the Guns 'n' Roses bass player, on TH-cam, and the comments are along exactly the same lines as on this video. Too many people showing utmost deference to their favourite rock god, but no respect to the interviewer or the program format. And you're also spot on about how well Tony understands and handles the HARD TALK brief.

Exactly... Mr. Iommi is far to polite with the questions this guy asks. That genuinely shows Iommi is an extremely humble and a nice guy who just created powerful music to create an entertainment for the world and people to enjoy not bitch about it. Bless the man who showed Tony Django - he really cared about Tony and getting him playing again. Not a lot of people were very encouraging of young musicians in the 60s and 70s.
Im as much a fan of Tony's as anybody. But, just saying for the sake of fact, that he deflected responsibility for some things and knowledge of stuff off of himself and had inconsistencies to they way others, and even he himself, have spoke about some of the same things. Just sayin'...

How this gentleman pulled off such a great career playing guitar like he did. Some of the most impressive hard rock albums of the 70's just rolled off the assembly line. EVERY SABBATH album was an event for me. If there is MAGICK somewhere in our part of the universe TONY undoubtedly tapped into it.

I saw Sabbaths last show in the O2 London, and it brought me back to my childhood in Harlem.. My mother had died and i was moving back to america after 17 years in England.. I was in tears in realisation of the change but Sabbath saw me through just like when i was a 13 year old back in '83... I ty=urned around and i wasnt the only one with tears cascading like Black Sabbaths namesake track... Good One!!!
Many men blossom with age. Tony was handsome and sexy in the 80's also. I kind of miss his thicker stache. I think Tony is the most handsome guitar player I have ever seen. In the 80's he looked like Magnum P.I. with a guitar.

Tony Iommi on BBC Hard Talk 2230pm 25.9.23 a lot of bands - known and terribly obscure types - bring that kindda act to the table: maintaining a bird's eye and critical view of the world. i can't see anything wrong with that, with suggesting those who are dishing out the peace accords whilst bombing the eff out of an alleged enemy shouldn't be looked at somewhat quizzically... etc..... i think they do deem such a stance as dealing in irony and satire. though, again, people do go too deeply into things and maybe they should have cottoned on to the band's style without having to have the A.B. C's of the situation spelt out to them. but ,as he says, some people want to hear it - whether it's bad news or ciphering what's on another's mind...

Can´t imagine this treatment for such a legend in any other genre.... guess the press will always hate Sabbath.
I believe it's a good thing. Many people forgot how dangerous and sinister heavy metal and rock'n'roll should be. Hence the birth of so many lame bands as of late. When heavy music gets clean it loses it's appeal. The musicians should get clean. But the music should remain dirty and sinful.

I'm sure Tony was well aware that the point was to ask him some awkward questions. But, as you say, he came out of it very well, as a genuinely nice chap.
Tony Iommi is probably the most unaffected rock star going, just a really down to earth guy with no snobbery or ego, the type of bloke you could probably go to the chippy with after this interview.

Met Tony twice and it was an absolute pleasure. A polite,quiet,kind dignified fella and he had time for everyone (it was a christmas do at a record company) and again after a show in Manchester where i blagged a corporate pass and met him in the bar (ozzy was present too) and he was just lovely. A true English gentleman.

I'm in the digit deficient guitar players club too, i lost the tip of my ring finger in an accident when i was a kid. it is a serious hindrance to playing guitar, difficult but not impossible & i'm too stubborn to let a silly thing like a missing fingertip stop me. I'd love to know where Tony gets his tips from, i could be doing with one. I really hope Tony beats that awful Cancer, all the lads in Sabbath are gods to me. The best band to ever grace this earth.
trevor phillips, As far as I know Iommi never stole songs or riffs from other artists like Page has done. No doubt he was influenced by those blues players he heard, but the guy should get much more credit for his creative ability and he sure changed rock music big time. He is such a down to earth ordinary kind of guy, he does not seem like some of the far less talented artists who have egos the size of hot air balloons. Hope he rocks on for a long time yet.
My understanding is he now uses professionally crafted prosthetic fingertips (check with your health care plan), but originally and for the first famous years he made his own using leather he sewed himself.

Only saw Sabbath once: Heaven and Hell tour w/Dio in Wheeling, WV. Front row right, gloriously, painfully (general admission floor ticket) close -- to the deafening stacks, awa near enough to Iommi to see those famous tipless fingers of his work their hypnotic magic.
In a superhero fever period of humanity, it is great seeing real life heros who overcome all sort of difficulties without any superpowers... Just talent and determination.
Doesn't anyone here know the concept of BBC:s hardtalk? It IS supposed to be bold and intense, the interviewer is supposed to really push the truth out of the guest. It is a very well known format, I'm sure Tony knew what he was getting into and he didn't seem to be irritated at all, and the interviewer did not seem to mean him ill either. I think the interview was great, he got Tony to give a lot more detailed answers about certain subjects than he would've done initially. Nice!
There are true legends in Rock n Roll, this man is one of them, the minute we lose a man like this is a moment we have to look at ourselves as a whole!!!

Tony Iommi is probably the most unaffected rock star going, just a really down to earth guy with no snobbery or ego, the type of bloke you could probably go to the chippy with after this interview.
Typical BBC attitude to Metal/Heavy music. They've been trying to deny it's existence for the last 50 years.

I think it's OK to try to be probing or whatever, but he's kind of an idiot.
That is the type of interview that is always featured on HardTalk (hence the name). Tony would have known there would be some tough questions. Anyone who goes on HardTalk comes under a bit of pressure.

Met Tony twice and it was an absolute pleasure.
A polite,quiet,kind dignified fella and he had time for everyone (it was a christmas do at a record company) and again after a show in Manchester where i blagged a corporate pass and met him in the bar (ozzy was present too) and he was just lovely.

Can I just say that the person in the Tony Iommi story I love is the guy from the factory who played him the Django Reindhardt record after his accident. That was an amazing thing to do. That guy, whoever he was, represents hope.

I'm in the digit deficient guitar players club too, i lost the tip of my ring finger in an accident when i was a kid. it is a serious hindrance to playing guitar, difficult but not impossible & i'm too stubborn to let a silly thing like a missing fingertip stop me. I'd love to know where Tony gets his tips from, i could be doing with one. I really hope Tony beats that awful Cancer, all the lads in Sabbath are gods to me. The best band to ever grace this earth.
trevor phillips, As far as I know Iommi never stole songs or riffs from other artists like Page has done. No doubt he was influenced by those blues players he heard, but the guy should get much more credit for his creative ability and he sure changed rock music big time. He is such a down to earth ordinary kind of guy, he does not seem like some of the far less talented artists who have egos the size of hot air balloons. Hope he rocks on for a long time yet.

My understanding is he now uses professionally crafted prosthetic fingertips (check with your health care plan), but originally and for the first famous years he made his own using leather he sewed himself.
Tony melted a detergent bottle into a little bowl and sanded it down then made a hole in it with soldering iron and glued a certain kind leather on it

This was is/a great band,...with Ozzy or with DIO.. they were equally sensational... no one else could have sang for them...
Only saw Sabbath once: Heaven and Hell tour w/Dio in Wheeling, WV. Front row right, gloriously, painfully (general admission floor ticket) close -- to the deafening stacks, awa near enough to Iommi to see those famous tipless fingers of his work their hypnotic magic.
Genuinely nice person. Very grounded and polite. Seen him a few times in the village where he lives walking his dogs.
In a superhero fever period of humanity, it is great seeing real life heros who overcome all sort of difficulties without any superpowers... Just talent and determination.

I think Sabbath had a driving force behind them which they weren’t aware of.
Doesn't anyone here know the concept of BBC:s hardtalk? It IS supposed to be bold and intense, the interviewer is supposed to really push the truth out of the guest. It is a very well known format, I'm sure Tony knew what he was getting into and he didn't seem to be irritated at all, and the interviewer did not seem to mean him ill either.
I think the interview was great, he got Tony to give a lot more detailed answers about certain subjects than he would've done initially. Nice!

I thought this was a good interview, after all it is called Hard Talk. It did make for some very insightful answers.
To some this may seem like a badgering interview, but the questions were good ones and the answers were even better and full of honesty. God bless you Tony, your music has brought great joy in a dark world. You and the other members of Sabbath have shed light on the darkness. We cannot heal the pain until we've felt the pain.
