I was misdiagnosed at 40 y.o. by my GP based on high glucose level blood test. I just had a rapid loss of weight and weighed about 155 lbs. I was able to control sugars with a low carb diet for quite a while. I slowly lost control and started on insulin. A new GP sent me to an endocrinologist who immediately told me I was too thin to be a type2. He did the C-peptide test first to diagnose T1, then the autoimmune test to confirm and tell what autoimmune disease it was. Long story short, if you are diagnosed with T2 and are not overweight, see an endocrinologist immediately.
Misdiagnosed 35 years ago as type 2 diabetic. After severe acute pancreatitis attack and hospitalization in 2020, I was found to be type 1 lada, along with 2 siblings whose journey looked like mine in all ways, even timing. I struggled for 35 years with treatment that did not work. I'm grateful for this video and your presentation. This is so clearly presented. Thank you
Ya I was on Metformin for 2 days, felt so awful and then was in pain in my pancreas area. They took me off and now I'm on insulin. I'm wondering why if we're type 1.5 would our bodies not like Metformin at all? Thanks for sharing
@@erint933 LADA is a beguiling form for diabetes with all of its other names like 1.5, etc. Mine was a slow progression of being type 2 over the years, taking meds like glucotrol and metformin. I am overweight but I have never thought that my obesity has been a cause. Diagnosed type 2 in 1994 by my primary/endo doc. Fast forward to 2007 and remember when I ate almost anything and felt very tired or drowsy. That was the confirmation, but I didn't need an insulin pump until around 2015. Now, I have an insulin pump and it is great at managing the LADA/1.5. It is a mysterious form of diabetes and it took me down many roads. I have the latest pump from Medtronic - the 780. It does about everything except making your coffee :-) -I wish you the best of health on your journey with the illness!!!
I work in paediatric hospital pharmacy where T1 juvenile is routinely diagnosed when a child usually presents in DKA but I have to say not one of my colleagues had heard of LADA when I told them of my diagnosis!
I am 41 and was misdiagnosed with Type 2 diabetes 12 years ago. I began getting sicker, not being able to absorb nutrients, no energy, and lost weight to the point of looking like a skeleton. Years later they realised I had LADA and diagnosed properly. I was put on 2 different types of insulin, and after a few months I felt like my normal self again prior to my diagnoses 12 years ago. I gained some healthy weight back, and can absorb nutrients again. But it hasnt been an easy 12 years, and im always getting sick, and have been diagnosed with other illnesses and Autoimmune diseases. But i consider myself lucky, because it could be alot worse . Take care all x
Hello, exactly the same thing happened to me aged 60. I’ve been on basal and bolus insulin now for 4 years. I have multiple autoimmune issues and the LADA was a very late one (arriving at age 60). I’ve been on a ketogenic diet for the last 6 months and have drastically reduced my insulins with some days having no bolus at all and having cut my morning basal by 60% as I’m now very low carb and high fat and high protein instead. Feeling SO much better in myself. Hoping that your improved health is continuing 🙏, Jan, England.
@@jankuhnert4768 sir how did u managed please help me how my husband is facing the same issue..he has lost almost 20kgs in past 2 years..now he has been diagnosed with type 1.5 .. still on insulin but unable to gain healthy weight
Every diabetes healthcare Provider should be required to watch this video,, I'm a 76-year-old male and it has been my experience after seeing many doctors civilian doctors, and VA Doctors that - to be blunt - no little or nothing about anything other than type one or type two diabetes.
Was diagnosed with LADA in 2020. My endo put me on insulin for like 3 months then back to Metformin. It's been 3 years and I'm really mindful of my diet and exercising regularly. Still not on Insulin 🎉🎉
How did the insulin helped? Do you know by chance? I suspect I have lada but doctor put me on metformin a month ago. 2000mg a day.. witch i think it’s a lot
@@yennyjen5742 Are you testing your blood glucose to see if your blood glucose is in normal range now? If it is, the Metformin is helping your bg stay in normal range. If it isn't, go back to your doctor and ask for those blood tests the CDE (certified diabetes educator) mentions in this video to determine if you are t1d or not. 2,000 mg a day is a lot. Some people use ozempic to keep their bg in range if they are t2d. the treatments are different. If you really want help see an endocrinologist.
@@dinkster1729 I was tested and came negative for lada. Dr suspects I have mody diabetes. I didn’t take the metformin but I been changing my eating habits.. I lost 8 pounds now. I wear a countinous glucose monitor and my glucose it’s more stable. They don’t spike that much but my fasting are still between 100-110 every day. They haven’t move at all. My a1c was 5.9 and insulin 6.4. The insulin number it’s what made my dr think it’s low to be type2… I am 36yr old, normal weight, all the wellness test came normal.. she’s leading to mody diabetes but told me the test it’s $1600 dlls 😰
This is great information!! I was misdiagnosed as type 2 at 49. It wasn't until I went from 280lbs to 170lbs and in an extreme catabolic state that my Doctor tested and found out that I was actually LADA. Now I am on insulin 210lbs and very healthy at the age of 51. I am thankful for Doctors like you 🙏.
@Engelbert Humperdinck P.As are a lot better than some Doctors to me when they are specialized in just one type of chronic disease, and they spend more time to talk, help their patients.
My GP saw my BG was abnormally high so straight away tested my ketones. They were 2.8 when they should be around 0.5. T2 rarely make ketones so this is a quick test to confirm a diagnosis of T1.
@@jdtown6585 Certainly in the U.K. when diagnosed with LADA Insulin is first line treatment. Tablets for insulin resistance are not used at all unless there is a T2 misdiagnosis.
Just got diagnosed with LADA. was diagnosed with type two last year. My new doctor put me on insulin 3 times a day with meals. Plus insulin at night. Metformin twice a day. This new lifestyle is so stressful but I’m happy with how much better I’m feeling.
LADA prognosis in the long run is injected insulin. It’s basically the same as T1 in children, autoimmune cause but when it is diagnosed in older adults for whatever reason it takes longer to manifest therefore a longer honeymoon period. Same autoimmune cause but a slightly different longer onset in adults. Nobody knows why but as a LADA patient myself I do appreciate the longer introduction to T1 diabetes.
I was diagnosed with lada five years ago, now I can't injest any food without insulin. Plus I'm terrible at counting carbs so I end up doing a couple of adjustment doses throughout the day. Most days my shots total anywhere from 4 to 10 doses a day. It's getting very daunting and depressing but I just keep plodding along. Glad to know I'm not alone tho.
Newly diagnosed (7 days ago) with LADA, age 25. Waiting out on insulin. Reading about sitagliptin and whatnot, but the doc discouraged the ideas, saying insulin is by far the best treatment.
I was 46 yrs old (I'm now 67) when a routine work physical turned up a blood sugar of 330 and triglycerides over 800. As a retired military person, I made an appointment with a military doctor. That Dr. told me to change my diet to bring my sugars down. He also told me if I could keep my blood sugar in normal range for a year, I'd be 'cured'. He ran no other tests beyond a finger stick. 10 months later my BS jumped up for no reason. Over the next few years, I was prescribed all the oral T2 meds. They didn't really help me. Finally I had a primary Dr. change who sent me to an Endocrinologist who ran lots of blood work. When the labs came back, I left the Endo's office with vials of insulin and syringes. He told me I had LADA and to stop the oral meds. 21 years later, I'm on a pump with CGM and doing well. My A1C has been running in the 6.1 range. I'm doing well, just get frustrated with the hardware hooked up to me 24/7.
I've been telling my Dr's for YEARS that I think I have this. They claim they've checked and that I don't. But the only thing that helps get my sugar down is insulin. Diagnosed with diabetes ar 42. I'm 5'2 and was not over weight. I presented with unexplained weight loss, constant thirst, urination and hunger. Tried metforminan the other ones, didn't do much to my sugar at all. No family history of type 1 or 2 diabetes in my family. I'm now 56, have retinopathy and constantly struggle with sugar control. I'm going to a lab to get the tests you suggested on my own. I'm almost certain I have this.
I have lada! It took me nearly dying a couple times to get a proper diagnosis. Had an ER doc tell me it’s impossible to get type one as an 18 year old. I’m on insulin now and have a Dexcom. Wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, I literally thought I was going to die.
I have learned a ton from your videos in just one day! Since I was exactly 40 when I accidentally discovered my high glucose, I should ask my doctor further questions.
I'm 38 just got out of the hospital the other day because I went to a medical center after losing a heap of weight and dry mouth and fatigue and all the other symptoms. Got to the emergency department with blood sugar and ketones through the roof they kept me a couple days before letting me go. No official diagnosis yet because here in New Zealand it can take time to get bloods back but they are fairly certain type 1 or Lada.
I was diagnosed at 29 with type 2 for literally 1 day. I didn't even take my metformin before I called an ambulance, was hospitalized with DKA and got diagnosed with type 1. I've been taking insulin ever since. I learned on my own online about LADA or type 1.5. I asked my endo about it, and she said because 1.5 isn't officially recognized by insurance providers, they don't even talk about it with their patience because it's "semantics".
Same, diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and 10 days later I was in the emergency room with DKA and the doctors quickly made the connection between my other autoimmune disease and started treatment for type 1.

I was diagnosed T1D after rapid onset and hospitalization at the age of 42. I was started on insulin right away. Several years later, my regular Endo would leave my clinic and a new one came in. The new Endo changed my diagnosis to LADA based solely on the fact that I was diagnosed as an adult. I only saw that Endo once, as they soon "left the clinic" also. Now I have an amazing Endo at a different clinic who is a rockstar Type 1 expert and absolutely gets it!
Great video! Diagnosed "LADA" last year, and have two questions that I would love to get your POV on: 1. If I only have GAD65 antibodies, and also have TPO (thyroid) antibodies, but do not have any other pancreatic antibodies, does that confirm LADA? Or is it an open question as to what cells my GAD65 antibodies are munching on? 2. I have a really accomplished endo who suggested I take repaglinide. I realize that the other related sulfonylureas may harm beta cells, but it looks like repaglinide has shown to perhaps not? Hard to believe that just one subclass wouldn't harm yet the others would, right? Thank you again. I hope your videos get more views and subscribers. You are a talented communicator.
Thanks, Jon. GAD65 is the most common antibody involved, so that alone is enough to confirm it. Those antibodies can be involved in other conditions as well, but if you fit the appearance of LADA and the GAD65 is positive, it's a fair conclusion that you're indeed LADA. Repaglinide is much more gentle on the beta cells than SUs and are only active for a few hours (which is why it's usually taken with meals). SUs are active all day long, which could explain the difference.
Hello! I just found your TH-cam channel and I have to say, it is awesome! I hope you continue making lots more videos! I love the subjects and the way you explain them is just perfect! Thank you, Thank you so very much ❤️

Diabetes diabetes…..guess what multiple healthcare companies are getting sued. Oxford Health Care didn’t want to pay for my Type 1 Diabetes supplies because Theresa Hendrickson was pist off because her daughter Cheyenne was born deaf 🧏♀️ and I was born basically blind. So Oxford Health Care put all the medical bills on a special needs camp Dr.Hakan had no decency to tell me and my mom 👩 about.
One year my BGs were fine. One year later my BGs were full on diabetic. (A1c 6.7) I exercised, changed diet and lost weight, with Visions of blindness and amputation keeping me on track. The next years checkup I was at 7+ A1c. I was put on Metformin. 3 months later my A1c was 9+ and I weighed 97 pounds. Blood test, new improved diagnosis, and I am getting training for a pump this week. It’s been a wild ride.
the way I see it is that it does not matter if your diabetes is autoimmune or not but most importantly when to start insulin and when not ..by the way ..GREAT channel ♥️
Im from Finland and just got diagnosed with some kind of diabetes(haven't gotten the official type yet) in july. Unrelated bloodwork that also happened to measure bloodglucose showed 18.8mmol while fasting. Weird thing is i didn't ever really feel anything that would suggest diabetes, i am clinically depressed and medicated for it and adhd so i guess those might make it hard to notice hunger etc. I am obese(bmi~ 35 if i calculated it properly) and 20 years old so at the emergency room it was decided its propably type 2, i agreed it would propably be type 2 due to my unhealthy lifestyle. Shortly after i met with a doctor and they decided to do some more bloodwork. The bloodwork showed my IA-2 antibodies were abnormal and i got a referral to a diabetes clinic where i have met with a nurse, they couldn't officially say what type i have(only doctors can) but they said it is propably LADA. In a nutshell i want people to know how hard diabetes can be to notice with other conditions present and how hard it can be to identify rarer types. My doctors decision to do extra bloodwork without much to back it up saved me from a similar story to some of the other comments here. Still, i have to say that i haven't seen the diabetes clinic doc yet so lada isn't confirmed and im not a healthcare professional. I haven't even known about my diabetes for long so please keep this in mind if you are reading this comment.
Thank you so much for this video! I didn’t know that insulin production was measurable by C peptides. I wonder how much insulin I still make 🤔. My bloodwork must have been very confusing! Thank you for the thoughtful and informative videos! I feel like I’ve learned so much in just 13 minutes!
Awesome! My videos covering diabetes medications might as well have been titled “what I wish I had been taught in PA school” so I hope you and your classmates find them helpful. Which school/program are you going through.?
I was diagnosed with diabetes at 29 years of age. I’m 62 now. I was not over weight back then. Within 3 months I was on insulin but my doctors kept labeling me as T2 & putting me not just insulin but the typical T2 meds. My mother was T1 from the age of 14 in the late 40’s till she passed in ‘86 at the age of 50 from complications. In 2012 my PMD when I was living & working in Virginia did blood work & then labeled me as LADA. I eventually moved to NYS & my doctors here labeled me back as T2, even though my symptoms say otherwise. Lately I’m having issues with several hypoglycemic episodes for 3 consecutive days below 55. I’m on an insulin pump. My endo did do blood tests recently and his diabetic educator said I’m LADA but that they keep me labeled as T2 for insurance purposes because my endo insists I be on mounjaro even though it does nothing for me even at the highest dose other than throw me into ketoacidosis for which I then have to be hospitalized so sick sick of all this
Hello doctor! my dad was diagnosed with lada diabetes a few weeks ago and he's underweight his doctor prescribed he takes mounjaro once a week and i've done my research on mounjaro and it says that it's used for people with type 2 diabates. my question is can lada patients use mounjaro? what if it's making them lose too much weight?
The other factor I should add is that around 6 weeks before my diagnosis I was ill for a week with a weird gastro illness. My symptoms varied on a day to day basis over a week ie nausea, extreme tiredness for me, (fell asleep on my commute home and missed my stop which has NEVER happened), stomach cramps, diarrhoea, loss of appetite (my partner even mentioned to me that I’d not eaten my breakfast bacon which is a never event for me usually so she knew something was wrong!)
Same for me! Just was hospitalized for DKA last week and was shocked that they said I was diabetic. Came out of nowhere. Theiugh thanks I had gastrointestinal issues ans bad heartburn ans a weird stomach bug
I had the same thing. Funny thing is, at the hospital when I went in for DKA, and they were like "you're 42 and not overweight you have know knowledge of having diabetes? That's really weird, and we don't know what is going on with you". Go to youtube, and everyone has almost the exact same presentation as me, tired, nausea, stomach cramps (mine radiated to the back and were brutal), no appetite, and like Stephanie O'Brien, I started about a week before the DKA with upset GI tract and heartburn. Sounds like a pretty common set of symptoms, so I don't know why the hospital acted like I was some type of mystery patient with totally atypical disease.
@@DarthHater100 Thank you for your interesting reply! I’m guessing you have the same type as me… I was 47 when diagnosed with LADA, it’s like a grown up version of juvenile T1 where kids tend to crash and burn quite quickly we have a longer honeymoon period before it all goes to shit!
@@stephaniem895 I can only say from what I have read about autoimmune disease that there is usually a genetic predisposition (depending on genes inherited) to certain diseases. Doesn’t mean you will automatically present with autoimmune disease but environmental factors also play a part. I am sure that the weird gastro illness I had 6 weeks before diagnosis with T1 that a viral infection kicked off an overreaction from my immune system. My mum has Multiple Sclerosis and I assume I inherited a predisposition to certain autoimmune diseases from her. I recently learned I also have a gene for coeliac disease but I don’t actually have it.
Thanks .. I have question .. If Anti-GAD positive .. Is it possible with time change to be negative ? And what role of supplements for immune system for LADA type patients?
Could you address the differential diagnosis of LADA & MODY? I have a strong genetic predisposition and an identical twin with adult onset type 1 who became insulin dependent about 8 years before I did, and I would like to give my children good genetic counseling to help with their health decisions
I have rarest diabetes. I was diagnosed with Diabetes at age 34 years, with my HBA1C was 13.4. Biggest problem is that no amount of Insulin works at my body. Only sulfonylureas work. Can u please advice what type of diabetes is this. As doctors in my country has not been able to understand this.
Make a GADA test then you know it is 1.5 type of diabetes. Here doctors are careless for they need money with out much work just they decide to give u insulin or tablets. But Lada type is very challenging . Insulin might not manage your case. So you need to do Gada test for anyltibodies . If u have one or more signs of this antibodies meaning you have LADa type. Good luck
My story is a little flukey. Saw my GP for a routine meds review age 47 last year. BP was unusually high so had a blood test. A1C 40, BG 12.3 mmol. 4 days later fasting glucose 7.5, A1C 44 and ketones 2.8. My GP was bang on LADA straight away. My mum has MS so it seems that maybe where the autoimmune thing comes from. My GAD blood test came back as elevated/positive.
@@lucieni Your A1C was 40%? I worked for 2 months at a diabetes clinic, and the highest I've ever seen was A1C of 15%! How is 40% even possible?? Usually something as high as 15% needs about three months of blood sugars over 20mmol/L, and 20mmol/L is a medical emergency.
@@DarthHater100 Thanks so much for your reply! I’m guessing you’re not from the U.K. or Canada? We use a different scale here in the U.K. which means that our score of 40 equals 5.8% so I totally see where you’re coming from and yes I’d be DKA dead if that was the case!!!
Was diagnosed with diabetes 5 years ago. Medication Trajenta. I was and am vegetarian so no diet change prescribed. Then, after 2 years with Trajenta i Got hit by kato acidosis and was hospitaliser. Here the team Started insulin treatment and changed the diagnosis to Lada. It still appears as a type 2 in my medication journal, but the insulin treatment persists. Blood sugar is consistently ok. Hope that Lada will become a formal diabetes category.
I grew up being a big kid, not huge, but I used to be obese many years ago in my early-mid 20s (got to be 194 at 5’1). I ended up losing a bunch of weight in my 20s, probably could’ve done better in hindsight, but at the time I knew I was healthier. In more recent years I have done better. Granted in 2019 and early 2020 would have my occasional high carb meals. I’m 32 now, btw. I got a bad case of covid in May 2020. Sometime in late September I started to notice I’d get headaches after high carb meals (never felt that before) and that scared me so I went to see my doctor. I was diagnosed in October of 2020 with prediabetes with an a1c of 5.8. I did an overhaul and cut down carbs and sugar a lot more, ate healthier by cutting down on high fat foods, had smaller portions, and started exercising. I couldn’t exercise much in 2020 because of having covid, having a full time job, and having to deal with two surgeries in the fall, and long haul covid issues. Brought my a1c down to 5.3, which I was tested for less than a week ago, but as of lately I feel more symptoms! Tingling in toes/finger, tired, labored breathing, and my tolerance for carbs seems to be worse than it was just 6 months ago! I now have to limit my carbs to around 20 a day in a keto diet, despite bringing my a1c way down. I tried telling my doctor that my glucose reads too high even with low carb meals, but she wouldn’t listen. I requested a ogtt test, but she shot it down. Talked to the nurse after my doctor left and had her come back to plead my case and get something done, but she wouldn’t listen. Thoughts? Your insight would be greatly appreciated!
How are you doing now, if you don't me asking? Any updates on diagnosis? I'm in a similar situation. Went from normal fasting glucose readings at 6 months bloodwork screenings, to 380 fasting blood sugar at a pre-op appt 6 months after a prior screening. I was diagnosed as type 2, as my c peptide was normal. I quickly got my a1c down from 11.6 to 5.8 within 3 months, with diet change. Continued that way for months, eventually got it down to 5.6. Around a year after diagnosis, my glucose levels started rising. My Dr told me to double my metformin (I now take 2000 mg), and it hasn't helped at all. My fasting numbers are close to 300 anymore. I can go days with no carbs, and I'm above 250....sometimes will come down to 200, but even low-fat cottage cheese will cause me to spike 80 points lately. It's scary and depressing. I have an appt again at end of this month, and hope Dr is willing to change my medication to something else. Metformin worked wonderfully a year ago! Literally doesn't at all now. 😖
Doctors do not comfort when you tell your problems , they get angry when you tell them that their medication fails to treat you well. This is very common among them they are very weird to hear your claim but do not stop to tell your feelings as much as you are paying them. The problem is in countries which there is free health care system. When you call them they keep quite they do not want to respond your call. This is always done in most countries of free health care is provided.
I have a question- so if Januvia promotes the pancreas to make more insulin, how is it able to preserve the B cells? Wouldn’t it wear the pancreas out? Would it be better to take januvia over a drug like Jardiance if the patient is deficient in insulin production?
Definitely a valid question. GLP-1 is an important part of maintaining beta cell health. Januvia prevents you from breaking down your own GLP-1 as quickly so it stays around longer (I haven't gotten to the video on these meds yet, but it's coming, I promise). So Januvia sort of indirectly promotes insulin production by allowing you to have more GLP-1 around, rather than directly stimulating the cell that way sulfonylureas do. Jardiance could help with blood glucose control, but would still need to be alongside insulin because of the risk of ketoacidosis.
Hi there, how to check c-peptide test?fasting ,or do it at the same time of gtt(glucose tolerance test 0h,1h,2h, )for example. what do you think?many thanks ,mourad.
Putting off taking insulin is probably a bad idea, since there's evidwnce to suggest that supporting your partially functioning pancreas with insulin can preserve its function. That partially functioning pancreas will make treatment more manageable over the long term.
I knew something was wrong for months. My Metformin was just not keeping my blood sugar down the way it was before. Dr. added long acting glipizide. I was very leary about this drug. It didn't help. Nothing was working. I finally demanded a c-peptide test and an antibody test be done. C-peptide came back at 8 and Gad came back at >250. I start on insulin tomorrow. Needless to say I am not a happy camper right now.
Ok.... So I had slow onset of symptoms starting at 20 (13+ years of symptoms). It started out as GERD, transition into a gluten sensitivity (negative for chrons & celiac) and now I am either insulin resistant or my betas are dying... I feel like I've caught it early because my labs (full metabolic panel, lipids, a1c, and blood counts) are all normal with the exception of my daily glucose levels when I check my fasting and 2 hrs after meals, the levels are considered prediabetic levels. My images in 2016 showed enlarged liver, gallbladder sludge (maybe), rapid gastric emptying, and I was iron anemic at this time as well... I still am undiagnosed at this point, but there is family history of type 2 on my dad's side and unknown type on my mom's side... Idk if that is enough information to get a diagnosis but I am managing it will a super low carb diet.
Healthcareproviders confusing types of Diabetes Mellitus? Wait till you show up with Diabetes Insipidus :D Just terrible how the "rare" things slip trough the cracks... Thank you for the education! I had no Idea there was a Typ 1.5. Very interesting even though I don't have Diabetes Mellitus.
I had a GAD65 test done and it showed I had the AI markers (almost 3 years ago). My endo doesn't believe that adults my age can get Type 1 and didn't seem to know about LADA, so we are just monitoring BS and A1C every 6 months. I don't think we every checked C-peptides? Everything is normal, BS low-high and A1c was 4.1 last month, but my daily bs seems to be running higher lately (over 100). Is there something else I (can / should) do to make sure we are on top of this? Should I be on any of these meds, or do they speed up the process? Has anyone sent this video to their doctor?
Please check with your own healthcare provider before making any medication changes, but generally speaking, Sitagliptan and Victoza are not used together.
I’ve been in the 1.5 camp for 10+ years. I appreciate your willingness to inform others about the differences in LADA. It did take a time to find the right combination of medication for my treatments. GLP-1 and Metformin as I also had insulin resistance. Upon diagnosis I had many antibodies. Over the years those antibodies have decreased or even gone negative. I do follow an AIP. Any insights?
Hi, Thanks for your comment. You bring up a good point that the presence of antibodies can fade over time, which makes it all the more important that the condition get recognized in a reasonable timeframe (so that it's not missed). I'm glad you've found a routine that's working well for you!
@@sugarhighchannel If antibodies disappear, does that mean the autoimmune issue also stops? Or do they disappear because they have no more cells to target?
Good question. I will say that I go through times that my auto immune “flares”. In those times I will see a change in my insulin production and treatments needs to change. I won’t say, “I’m cured!” As an am still diabetic. I am still needing to control my sugars and medication. I think there is still some uncertainly on why some have had a longer “honeymoon period” than others.
@@NewPOV There's a lot that we still don't know about the presence of antibodies, why some appear and others don't in different individuals, and why some people with type 1 diabetes never even test positive for antibodies in the first place. But to the best of my knowledge, it's a fair conclusions that if the antibodies disappear (assuming they don't return), what's done is done and any residual beta cell function (if any) will likely remain stable.
@@johannanoble437 Very true. Researchers have learned a lot, but there are many factors involved in diabetes that we're all still scratching our heads about.
Thanks man i probably have LADA. Now i know what it is. i had diabetes when i was 25 years old and 11 years later i thing i have still some of my own insuline. They say that my pangreas would stop producing insuline after 2 months and 11 years later it is still about the same it kind of works. Diagnosed as Type 2 aged 51 (4 years ago) due to very high blood glucose and all the other typical symptoms. Prescribed metformin, and also at various stages empagliflozin, gliclazide, linagliptin in higher and higher doses. Lost 5 stone (70 pounds for my American friends) but glucose stayed high despite also following a very low carb diet. Eventually was told they thought I was Type 1 (after various blood tests) and taken off all the pills and put on insulin a week ago. Blood glucose levels are already pretty much back to normal. Just got to learn how to adjust my insulin intake to balance the carbs I eat. Better late than never I suppose…….
I have been having sumptoms.and I have had wild sugar level swings. After eating not related to foods I eat. (I had a steak and then my sugar dropped to 70, ate sugar and brought it up but ate nothing for 5 hours and my sugar was 180!) I did some research and told my doctors I wanted to test for GADA. I have autoimmune diseases (7 of them) -multiple autoimmune syndrome. So asked for Addison's test and LADA. My doctor laughed and said fine but you don't have diabetes. But I have high GADA and pain in my pancreas all the time. Now I am diagnosed by phone and referred out. But my sugar level is 114 A1c. So not too high yet. So I'm getting ahead of it now. Thank you for the video. It is helpful. He only ran the one test. But I will get a c-peptides test now.
Is C peptide always low right from the start? My c peptide is borderline high at 1.29 nmol/L but I am not okay weight. Not over weight. But actually on leaner side.
My son is type one diagnosed at age 8 now 21. I went through Trial Net in 2013 and I have 4 antibodies and my blood 🩸 sugars are still normal . I have hypothyroidism and Pernicious anemia. I am still in stage one of type one and I am 48 years old 112 lb. Do you think I will ever have type one or will this be considered LADA if I become symptomatic. By the way, I am still participating in Trial Net for the past 6.5 years.
Ok well, this was enlightening. I have a BMI of 18.8 and that is after working to gain weight. Diagnosed with Gestational diabetes in 2011. Rediagnosed with Type II in 2013. Highs and lows (especially when meals are skipped) so to me, it looks like LADA.
Hello. I just reveived the following results from a test to understand if I have any Diabetes predisposition or risk: - Fasting Glucose: 90 mg/dL - A1c 5,44% - Insuline 3,07 uUI/ml - C Telopeptide 0,829 ng/ml - Glucose Pre/Post Pandrial Pre:89 Post 72 What does C Telopeptide result means? Do you think I have any risk of LADA? I am doing all these tests because in January I got a 105mg/dL fasting glucose result.
Hi I got a question for awhile I need to eat or I get moody dizzy I crave sweets I bought glucose metter it reads 80s I feel I need to eat my can be high as 222 even 380 low as 59 I haven't been diagnosis with anything help ?
Robbie- 80s is normal, but if you are getting as high as 300, that could definitely explain why you feel low in the 80s. Glucose above 200 on multiple occasions is definitely in the diabetic range so make sure you see a doctor soon to get diagnosed and treated. Best wishes!
My daughter was 40 when diagnosed with diabetes. Never within a whisker of obesity. Active life. Within two years she was put on injecting insulin. No one knows which type she is, but is now having a test. They think she has also developed crohns. Her sugars have got a lot worse (in the teens) now she is fifty. Age, menopause? Not a happy bunny.
Hii...found your vedio very informative...I was diagnosed as GDM during my pregnancy 2 years ago...I m 32 and now my Hba1c is 6.5...however I am thin built and short height n my mother is also a diabetic but thin built..could it be LADA
Thank you ! Good explain ! Definitely i think I'm LADA was diagnosed 1.5 month ago type 2 but after results of c-peptide 0.45 and GAD over 11k find out I'm type 1.. and was starting with fast insulin and slow at night.. but slowly with a low carb food i was able to not take in insulin at all and generally i have like 100 mg dl and 2 hours after i eat it's about the same even if in this 2 hours it's going to 180 or a little over 200.. I'm thinking that i will be in the day that i will need insulin .. but i hope to be far away that day..
I’m a type two diabetic I have been since 2004 but lately I’ve lost crazy amounts of weight over 40 pounds in six months So would insulin be the best for me my highest blood sugar was 436 I am now 138 pounds I was 182
I am in southern california. Having trouble with my diagnosis and trying to find a health care provider that will listen to me and not just throw medication at me at random. Can you private message me. Interested in maybe seeing you as my healthcare provider.
I don’t think TH-cam has a private message feature, but feel free to call my office at 661-210-6650 to make an appointment or email me directly at sugarhighchannel@gmail.com
Do ppl with LADA have high blood sugar? Also my c-peptide was within normal range is that a sign of T-2 ? I am concerned my blood sugar is high and came on suddenly but I am 5'8 200 and I refuse to gain 30 pounds with insulin
This is me!! My cancer treatments- keytruda- killed my pancreas in about 3 weeks! Went to ER by ambulance- glucose over 800!! Then they had me overdosing on insulin for 4 weeks!! I thought I was going to die!! Went on Medtronic 780g pump for 7 months- hate it!! Back to self injections.
What happens when it’s discovered that a person has chronic pancreatitis like my case. I can’t take metformin, glipizide, Januvia, trulicity or ozempic? I also have stage 3 kidney disease making the above medications not an option. Right now I’m on short acting insulin but it’s not working very well.
I found this video to be very interesting. I take long acting and short acting insulins. Been diabetic since 2003. Been on insulin since 2014. I'm not making much insulin. Had c peptide test. I don't remember what the results were.
My dr thinks I have a different kind of diabetes that's tied into pcos. I have to use a lot of insulin for it to be effective. Metformin would only work if I took a very high dose. They thought at first I had type 1 but not type two. The test of type two. My insulin will go to 500 if I miss a single dose. I had gestational diabetes. I was never diabetic before then. It turned into type 2. I am obese also. And I have endometriosis and thrombocytopenia auto immune disease. I've already changed my diet and I exercise. All my dr tells me to eat more protein. Is there an unusual type of diabetes that's causing my severe resistance? My pancreas and thyroid is normal.
Great video! Can a no carb, no dairy no sugar diet cause low c peptides (.60)? A1c is 5.4, Gad is neg, insulin is neg, bs is 93. Ive had an a1c of 5.7 being the highest years ago. And highest bs of 104. Any thoughts? Could this be a type of Mody.. maybe type 2? I see a endocrinologist in 2 weeks but would like to go in prepared. 😊 thank you
Thanks for your comment! A very low carb diet or even fasting can cause C-peptide to be on the low side, since the pancreas doesn't need to create much insulin at those times. Can't really say for sure whether its MODY without genetic testing, although I also have a video all about MODY on my channel that describes each of the more common types. Hope your end appointment goes well!
@@sugarhighchannel thank you. Ive read several articles saying a low carb/ no carb diet and fasting before the test can lower your c peptides so I am convinced its that. Although I will keep my appt just in case. I am trying to heal my gut thats why I'm on the diet. I did watch that video as well. Very informative and easy to understand! Thanks. Keep making those videos!
I'm actually planning on a video comparing accuracy of glucose meters. But I'll go ahead and give you a spoiler: The Contour Next and the Accucheck Aviva Plus are tow of the most accurate, but the strips are expensive. The Wal-mart ReliOn and CVS Advanced meters are almost as accurate and are much more affordable.
I don’t know about”best” not sure there is a best. I would consider, and even though my current meter is partially covered by insurance, I am considering for myself, the OneTouch Ultra. Not the lowest cost to by but not real expensive either and two brands of generic test strips are available for it keeping costs reasonable without insurance. For those thinking why buy one if you have insurance, insurance doesn’t come free and I’m kind of tired of all these companies and people saying your out of pocket is low, we will screw over your insurance or the government, so who cares. I care, cost of our system is rapidly moving our country towards bankruptcy.
I put all my symptoms into ChatGPT and it came up with LADA. My doctor had given up on figuring out what was going on. Great video!
Curious to know how long in terms of months or years you were able to control your LADA while on a low carb diet?
@@erint933I’m supposed to be starting Metformin in a couple weeks, now I’m so doubtful as to it even helping! ☹️
I'm a young doctor, and this helped, I will be translating it into Russian for my Russian colleagues, thank you very much, doctor.
Great! I'm glad it helped. Thanks for your support.
Hello mam i would like to know which insulin you are using
@@darpanengineeringconsultan6131 Hello, I am using Novorapid and Levemir flexpen

Every diabetes healthcare Provider should be required to watch this video,, I'm a 76-year-old male and it has been my experience after seeing many doctors civilian doctors, and VA Doctors that - to be blunt - no little or nothing about anything other than type one or type two diabetes.
True - my doc included.
Thanks for your comment and kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and glad you're doing well.
I've got a similar story. Did you end up starting insulin? I'm still at 170 pounds, from about 210 lean. Very depressing.
I don’t want LADA but being the mysterious zebra in the beginning made me feel a little special 😆
This is what my doctor thinks I have, waiting for an endo visit to get proper tests. This video very helpful. Thank you.
Just got diagnosed with LADA. was diagnosed with type two last year. My new doctor put me on insulin 3 times a day with meals. Plus insulin at night. Metformin twice a day. This new lifestyle is so stressful but I’m happy with how much better I’m feeling.
@CVR0 😂😘😂
I think I have lada, can you please respond..
I have complicated lada starting jumping with long acting insuline
Thank you so much I was diagnosed with LADA 3 years ago, but still not on insulin, thanks for that very informative video, appreciated 💪 👍
Curious, how do you manage?

Diagnosed "LADA" last year, and have two questions that I would love to get your POV on:
Total Types of Diabetes
Thanks for this! Your video got me to push for my doctor to send me to an endo. Turns out I was LADA and not type 2.
I was just disgnosed and its rapid onset. I have lupus but am still going to ask for these tests.

Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for your comment.

This is probably what I have!!! My Doc said my sugar levels are high with an A1c of 11 but very low c pep levels.

Good luck
very clear explanation
Thank you very much very helpful information
My story is a little flukey. Saw my GP for a routine meds review age 47 last year. BP was unusually high so had a blood test. A1C 40, BG 12.3 mmol. 4 days later fasting glucose 7.5, A1C 44 and ketones 2.8. My GP was bang on LADA straight away. My mum has MS so it seems that maybe where the autoimmune thing comes from. My GAD blood test came back as elevated/positive.
That's great that your GP identified it appropriately. Stay healthy and best wishes from the US
Sugar High Absolutely. I’m very lucky I have an excellent GP and best wishes from the U.K.
Get a new doctor.
@@wigglywoo8899 I’d get a second opinion.
Sugar High From a point of view of paediatric ‘unusual’ hypoglycaemia in the U.K. I have only ever seen Januvia prescribed in GSD 1 spectrum.
How about LADA vs. type 2 when I have 2 children with type 1 diabetes
That was a very good explanation of LADA. Thank you. Information in UK is a bit scant and confused even among healthcare professionals. 👍
Very informative video, thank you!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Please suggest specific medications regime for ladsa
Hi there, how to check c-peptide test?fasting ,or do it at the same time of gtt(glucose tolerance test 0h,1h,2h, )for example.
what do you think?many thanks ,mourad.
C peptide test determine of whether it's type 1or 2??my age was 22 c peptide test results is 1.44 ngml which type consider??
Very nice video.Animations and slides are also too good.
My GAD antibodies just came back at >2000. Now I’m a bit concerned. What could this mean???
5:49. That should raise "a lotta" suspicions.
Hi!
Love your content!!! I was wondering if you had done any videos on type 3c?
Pink Paws Thanks for your feedback! I haven’t done one on type 3c yet, but it’s a great idea. I’ll add it to my to-do list.

I'll hold out until then haha. Thanks again for great videos.

*You Did Not Choose To Be Classified As Diabetic, But You Can Choose To Fight Back Against Diabetes* 💪
To clarify - that doesn’t mean being cured of diabetes. But you can still live a good life!
I suspect I am LADA because I have anti-GAD antibodies, but why does my GP insist I should stick with sulfonylureas medication?
I am on Insulin Pump, Sitagliptin+Metformin and Victoza. Is this combination correct ?
Please check with your own healthcare provider before making any medication changes, but generally speaking, Sitagliptan and Victoza are not used together.
@@sugarhighchannel Is Metformin used with Insulin Pump and Victoza ?
It can be, if your healthcare provider determines it is appropriate for you@@virajitgundale4382
I have insuline 5-5-5 Apidra and 22 Tresiba. 1.84 height and 81 kg. What do you think?
Thanks alot for this! Really helpful in my studies :)
Sure sounds like it’s worth a conversation with your healthcare provider. Hope this was helpful!
Hello. I just reveived the following results from a test to understand if I have any Diabetes predisposition or risk:
- Fasting Glucose: 90 mg/dL
- A1c 5,44%
- Insuline 3,07 uUI/ml
- C Telopeptide 0,829 ng/ml
- Glucose Pre/Post Pandrial Pre:89 Post 72
What does C Telopeptide result means? Do you think I have any risk of LADA? I am doing all these tests because in January I got a 105mg/dL fasting glucose result.
I’m 24 and have been diagnosed with lada . I’m confused now
Love the production!
Diagnosed 11 years ago as type 2 but diagnosed LADA 2 years ago
How about autoantibody-negative type 1 diabetes ?? Isn't this a rare of the rare form of subtype ? ?
Hii...found your vedio very informative...I was diagnosed as GDM during my pregnancy 2 years ago...I m 32 and now my Hba1c is 6.5...however I am thin built and short height n my mother is also a diabetic but thin built..could it be LADA
It could be a possibility. Consider discussing the possibility with your healthcare provider to find out for sure.
I have also lada . I will share my expiriences watch dr berg videos for diet.
Qyestion. A cpeptide .8 and insulin resistance number 33..lada..a1c 5.2. Following strict low carb diet
I’m a type two diabetic I have been since 2004 but lately I’ve lost crazy amounts of weight over 40 pounds in six months So would insulin be the best for me my highest blood sugar was 436 I am now 138 pounds I was 182
Were you diagnosed with LADA?
I would ask your healthcare provider about adding a long acting insulin. We rarely use short acting insulin alone (unless given through a pump).
@@sugarhighchannel I will definitely do this. Thank you for responding.
In a nutshell, LADA is when Type 2 becomes Type 1 according to my endocrinologist.

What the best glucose meter to get at Walgreens or cvs? That I could buy that accurate? That u don’t have to use insurance for?
I'm actually planning on a video comparing accuracy of glucose meters. But I'll go ahead and give you a spoiler: The Contour Next and the Accucheck Aviva Plus are tow of the most accurate, but the strips are expensive. The Wal-mart ReliOn and CVS Advanced meters are almost as accurate and are much more affordable.
Sugar High I had got the true metrix meter Walgreens brand
