I’m so happy you’re still around. I can’t believe I’ve been watching you since the Tetris and Mario 2 review. Glad after all these years you still have the same level of energy and that iconic theme
Yo IRATE Gamer! Wario here. Wario approves your as always awesome game reviews with that energy and dedication. Continue this 💪 Also that doupleganger you used of me was a good looking one - and one of my cheepest ones to rent 😆.
@@irategamerdoing great keep them coming! Much love for this game and Super Mario Land III. Broke out my original run Irate Gamer shirt from years ago.
Ah yes. Super Mario Land 2. I love this game growing up. And coming back to this game, it is really fresh to play still. The only thing I found annoying is that if you somehow get a game over, you lose all 6 golden coins, locking you out of the last level. This means that if you want another shot at the castle, you need to refight the bosses to reclaim the 6 golden coins again. But when the difficulty is just right, I didn't mind doing that much. I always see this as a classic in my book. Great review.
I never would have known one of my all-time favorite Game Boy games had a full color remaster made by modders unless I had seen this video! Thanks so much, IG!! 🙏
In all those Years Chris you are still truly The Irate Gamer TH-camr you've been doing an Outstanding Job uploading more and more stuff I'm glad that I like your videos so much keep doing a Fantastic Job Uploading more videos Chris Video Games is the Greatest! and as always Game On!
SML2 is an underrated gem for sure, and because Wario was such a popular antagonist, he got his own games, which have been ranging from great to mid since day one.
I mean a thousand people have said this already, but I can’t believe how much better the Irate Gamer has become than AVGN. When I see a new video I click on it right away and am actually happy to see it. When AVGN uploads a new one I cringe and can’t bring myself to watch it
I LOVE Mario Land 2. My mom got tired of me asking for "6 Golden Coins!" constantly until I got it for my birthday. It really blew my mind as a kid, especially compared to the neat but kind of drab looking Mario Land 1. I still replay Mario Land 2 every once in a while, one of the few GameBoy games that gets that treatment from me!
This was literally the first video game I ever beat and I was so happy because I thought I was too bad at games to ever win lol. I couldn't have been more than 10 or 11 when this came out in the 90s. The Game Boy had some banger platformers though. This game also started Wario's spin-off adventures which were the 'Warioland' series of games. I wish Nintendo would bring those back as a remake or something since those were very good too. Also awesome, I never knew fans colorized Super Mario Land 2. It looks great!
@@mver191 Yeah it was definitely way easier than the first Super Mario Land. I couldn't beat that one as a kid until years after I beat SML2. And I struggled with Wario's Castle and was so satisfied when I finally beat it. I am surprised that the first Warioland game is also called Super Mario Land 3 though and that they didn't make a 3rd game with Mario instead but I'm not complaining since Wario is one of my favorite Nintendo characters lol.
The Legos in the Mario's Head stage are actually N&B bricks, a toy Nintendo made in the 60's; an N&B stamp can even be seen on one of the bricks near the end of the level. There was actually a lawsuit due to the similarities IIRC.
In mario top 5 this is number 2 only behind smb3 for the nes. When I got my Gameboy as a child i got the links awakening (my favorite zelda) and smb 6 golden coins. This game looks amazing and feels different than any other Mario titles. They worked magic around the Gameboys hardware limitations and made a truly unique game. The level designs were amazing mixing classic Mario staples like goombas with new and innovative enemies and bosses. The 8 bit music and sounds were top notch and this really felt like a console worthy Mario title in your hands.
This was my first Game Boy game (like, before I even owned a Game Boy) - I used to play it a lot back in the day (and it took me at least ten years to actually complete it, for whatever reason... okay, I suck at videogames.) I know what you mean about the submarine level, thinking about it - it annoyed me too (those spikes that come down always seemed to get me...) I'm surprised you didn't mention how if you get Game Over when you've collected (some of) the Six Golden Coins, they go back to their boss, and you have to collect them again - that sounds like a real "Irate Gamer" moment. :) Great video!
One thing I didn't like about these games was that once you defeated a boss level you weren't allowed to replay it without nuking your save. When they made the colorized version, it would have been nice if you were allowed to play with the original sprites for Mario. They updated them to be more like Super Mario World.
Ahh. The classic videos. Critique. Fourth wall breaks or character features. Silly jokes and or slang. Graphics easy on the eyes. Pixle sprites are always a good thing. Love it all. Peace!-)
Your puppet Steve!!! I know you… lol… your probably saying screw me right now but… yeah I grew up on you when I was like 8 and then I found you here when I was like 13 and I watch a video every now and again!!! I love em!!! Your better than the AVGN by far! You’re soo funny!!! I’m now 17 btw!!! You’re the best game reviewer on TH-cam man!
Since Nintendo has been on a roll with remakes as of late, I wish they’d rebuild this game for their current system (or next). The 6 Golden Coins is such an awesome game. The music slaps so hard.
Saved all summer and bought this on release way back....and bougjt it again tecently and finally completed it😂😂😂30 odd years later....gamer forever..a true classic showing tje gameboy for what it was...the greatest..
Thought I check this out before the new one. Great episode. I first heard of Wario from a commercial for his spin-off game "Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land". Funny how this game introduces a villain who'd get his own series of games. Shame Bowser never got one. lol Seeing what goes on in Mecha-Mario, I bet his visits to the Doctor must've been fun. 🤣
As someone with aspbergers, I laughed so hard at those jokes. You're right about this game being underrated. My favorite zones were always Pumpkin, Macro, and Mario.
You don't have to get the power up in the claw game. If it picks up something you don't like, you can just leave. Try it out and let me know if it works.
This was my favorite game on the Gameboy. I could never beat Wario either. I did like how getting hit once only took you back to the mushroom power up and didn't turn you all the way back into little Mario. From what you showed of the remastered version it looks like Luigi wasn't given the feather in his hat for the fire flower upgrade. Did they remove it from the Mario sprite too?
That was so much fun watching this review where Wario (warishick) is pretty much attacked and defeated super mario land 2 was alot of fun I beated the game when I was 22 years old back in February 2016. Best regards Nikita.K
1:58, I've never heard of that before till now. 0_- 2:44, why not both? 2:55, he's hungry. 5:59, 'sigh' Poor Mouser. He was literally the Goldar of that game. 6:30, 'gasp' HE KILLED HIM!! YOU BASTARD!! 7:56, guess he couldn't come for a second show!! HAHA!! 9:40, movie references keep comin'. 10:40, Irate Gamer wins!! Flawless Victory!
Probably a dumb question, but I gotta ask it. Final battle, why jump on his head while he's flying when you can knock the chandelier on his head? I mean, either way works, but that was the intended method if I remember correctly.
I love both Mario Land 1 and 2. Mario Land 2 I found to be easy especially compared to other Mario games at the time, but it's one of my favourite Mario game on the Game Boy. I found Mario Land 3 to be a bit repetitive.
I didn't like this game back in the day. I've warmed up to it since then, but it still feels floaty and sluggish compared to what I'm used to getting from Mario. I think it comes down to the size of the Mario sprite. He's right on the cusp of being too big for the screen. If he runs too fast, then there isn't a lot of time to react to objects that scroll onto the screen. I also found it awkward that merely jumping can cause the screen to scroll vertically. Oh, some other comments... 0:58 Nice to see that w're including Super Mario Bros. 2 among the classics, Chris. 2:36 Before becoming a videogame juggernaut, Nintendo was a toy company that produced their own line of Lego clone bricks. 8:05 Wario's castle is one of my least favorite Mario end zones. I even like it less than the last castle in Lost Levels. There are those weird pirana plant statues in the first hallway that are basically designed for cheap hits. I don't think you can get through that area without taking damage. I've tried.
I’m so happy you’re still around. I can’t believe I’ve been watching you since the Tetris and Mario 2 review. Glad after all these years you still have the same level of energy and that iconic theme

Mario land 2 is one of those secret Mario games that’s shocking good on the platform it was released on. Thanks for giving it more attention!
Super mario land 2 DX is further proof that fans always do the best work on franchises.
4:15 you can actually leave by pressing back if you didn't like the powerup you got
Tons of people don’t know that you can do that.
Just some trivia, the boss in the space zone was the final boss from super mario land 1
Yeah, I was surprised he didn’t mention that.
The Irate Gamer is finally getting the love he should have got back in the day!
I know, it's kinda weird to an extent lol
@@irategamer you deserve it Chris! Thank you mate
Actually, those aren't Lego bricks. Those are bricks that Nintendo used to make.
Warioland Super Mario Land 3 was my favorite, Warios power ups were awesome. Love 2 as well, still have it.
I AM still amazed at the creativity that goes into every Mario game since 1985
6 golden coins is in the top 5 best Mario games of all time and that's no joke. This is seriously a great game.
