    “We Didn’t Start the Fire” was released when Billy turned 40. It’s a list of historic events from his birth to his 40th birthday.

      And he pretty much hates performing it, citing how repetitive the music structure is.

    Four Billy Joel music videos in a row? I am *always* down for that! You can put all of his songs into a hat and pick one out at random and it would be a legitimate hit, he is just that good and his catalogue is just that deep and varied. If you want to hear more of his vocals with an acoustic guitar, I would recommend She's Always a Woman. And you so need to check out Scenes From an Italian Restaurant for some epic storytelling (the live version from Long Island is a fun one).
    ETA: Just remembered, another acoustic guitar song is Don't Ask Me Why.

    The first two songs you reacted to are my two favorite songs of Billy Joel. You mentionted how good the drums were. Billy Joel (and I believe also Elton John) has one of the best bands in the business. True story: during the height of Covid when everyone and everything was shut down, Billy Joel continued to pay his band, not knowing when they would ever be able to get out and perform again. He is that loyal to his band members that he wanted to know they would still be with him when Covid restrictions let up. I think that's pretty awesome!

    Can you imagine if Billy wrote a follow up to We Didn't Start the fire, even just from 1990- now? It would have to be like 10 minutes long. The story goes, a son of one of his friends was complaining about the state of politics and how we got there. Billy used to be a teacher before he became famous, so he wrote this to show life's always been crazy. A song that's very similar in message is Alabama's Song of the South. My history teacher played both to try to interest kids in history.

    Great choices! Billy Joel is a musical genius singer-songwriter. All four of these songs were pretty sad and/or deep. If you want some ideas for lighter, fun and/or more romantic songs by Billy, I recommend "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me" (No. 1 pop, 1980), "Just the Way You Are" (No. 3, 1977. a beautiful ballad), "The Longest Time" (No. 14, 1984 ... fun harmonies with his bandmates), "The River of Dreams" (No. 3, 1993). And "Innocent Man" (No. 10, 1984) really shows off the high register of his voice.

    I’m so glad you do these 4 packs. It’s so hard to get a handle on a talented artist like Billy Joel with one song. He is literally his own genre and I think it’s safe to say that he composes music based on what he is thinking and feeling and not a formula. Billy is a national treasure and he makes me proud to be from Long Island, even tho I no longer live there. If you are or were from the Island, you are an automatic, honorary fan. Some other great Billy choices are An Innocent Man, Scenes from and Italian Restaurant, Angry Young Man and Captain Jack. That’s hardly the tip of the iceberg, but it’s a great start. I’d also love to see you dive into some other bands that are very eclectic and would do well with a 4 pack. Electric Light Orchestra;
    A/k/A E.L.O, Cheap Trick, The Cars, and Devo. Let me know if would like some song ideas for any particular one of these. Also would love to see more U2 in this format since their music also tends to run the gamut! 🙂Thank you!!

    I know this video is older but I thought you could appreciate the history on two of those songs. Piano man is actually a true story of his own life. His first record company really screwed him to the point he couldn't even use his own name so he was performing as a lounge singer under William Martin (his middle name) just to pay the bills till his contract expired. The song was the everyday people he saw come in and how things went, so he told the story his way. As for We didn't start the fire, it was actually something that came out of a conversation with one of his friends saying how nothing really historic happened in their lifetime. So he started in 1949(the year he was born) and hit every major historical event till 1989 (his 40th birthday) it's actually the only song he wrote the lyrics before the music so he calls it his worst composition.

    "Saigon" is about all of our young men that were drafted by the Democrats to go and fight in Viet Nam. "We Didn't Start the Fire" is about actual historical happenings between Billy Joel's birth to his 40th birthday. Don't just listen to the music. With Billy Joel's music you have to pay just as much attention to the lyrics! "Piano Man" was about Billy Joel's experiences playing piano in music lounges before he became famous. It's about sharing loneliness with other lonely people at a bar.
