Thanks for your patriotic memories. I lived between an army fort and a navy base. Lost so many friends, not only to death, but to the the issues they came home to. Lost my beloved years later from affects from agent Orange
So sorry about your loss. My younger brother served in Viet Nam. While he made it through the war unscathed physically, he had many psychological problems after the war. Many years later he succumbed to diabetes, which was caused by agent orange. And I lost two close friends in that damn war and always wondered why God protected me (I served from '68 to '70) and never left the States.
When Billy Joel received a Kennedy Center Honor, Garth Brooks performed this song, with Vietnam vets singing the chorus.
Both my parents, my 3 brothers, and I are all veterans.
As a Vet, it hits you in the feels... :(..I served 6 years after the Nam ended...So, naturally, I got great, and fresh, first hand stories...Their are many in bad shape now at the VA...But, I know some who still can rock it! :)...Nice reaction coach and I'm sure it makes you proud your dad did his duty.

Everytime I hear this song it brings me to tears. Lucky, I just had to protect an ammunition storage in Austria while the war in Yugoslavia over 30 years ago. But scars remain in your brain. Great song by Billy, but I prefer his Lovesongs...

To all veterans, a deep thank you for your service and sacrifice. There are two songs that always got to me. It's this one, and Dire Straits "Brothers in Arms". And a big thanks to Coachmichael for reacting to this!

I hate to be that bloke but I do not think the singers on the chorus here are vets and instead are Billy's roadies.

You're wrong. The background singers are Vietnam Vets.
@@billmuller1469 They are these days but this was December 1982 and the album was only released in September 1982, so I am not sure if Billy was using them this early.
Incidentally, it is hard to be wrong when saying "I think", as well as saying "unless, that is".
