I am a first time home owner. About 8 months into our new construction home. The builder did a real sloppy job with alot of the finishing work and I've been fixing alot of stuff as I go through and paint. I've learned so much from your channel. I watch it every night for hours. Watching you blend that knockdown texture was absolutely fantastic. We have knockdown ceilings here. Now I know if I ever have to repair and blend an area - I can watch this video over and over and practice
I’m really impressed with your sponge/texture technique. I’ve done something similar on very small repairs but never tried it on something so large. Excellent job!
All of the scenarios here are super helpful as I have a few minor cracks I'd like to DIY repair! I love how I always ask a question in my head while watching your video, and then you end up answering it during the video anyways! Really appreciate all of your videos and how thorough and concise you are.
Old kilty is my favourite as he shows you all ways to repair the job from beginning to the end, i trusted him from the beginning when he put screws both sides of the crack, a taper that repaired my mums house didnt do this and the crack reappeared, thankyou for your advice.
When talking about mesh tape versus paper tape...I don't use paper tape at all unless I'm doing inside corners, I always use hot mud and fibafuse over mesh tape. Everyone has their own preferences, but I've come to really love the fiberglass tape over mesh tape. If your mud is a little thin, it soaks right in and creates a super strong bond. Great video as always Guy!
+1 to using hot mud. I just repaired a similar amount of cracks at my house (50+). I'm not a fan of mesh tape though. I like the "crack tape" as it has more sheer strength to resist future cracks. The most important, often overlooked step is to, when possible, reattach the cracked drywall to a stud with screws. If you don't, it will likely crack again. Great video!
Diy-er here. Great tip on the custom sponge and knock down. I just did a couple rooms w 50+ nail pops each on textured walls. I made do w a blue kitchen sponge on hand and brushed a light sand paper over the dried texture. Close but not exact. I like your tips better and 1 less step. I appreciate your content! Ive learned a lot as a perfectionist

Hi I want to re secure the drywall around some cracks like you show but I am worried about hitting wires and pipes. I own my own business starting out and have not textured yet. How long after priming the knock down... can you then apply the paint afterward? The knock down being porous will absorb the primer and the primer will dry slower correct? So how long does that primer need to set up on the knock down? 🤔 Love your videos TKG! You're my number 1 source of drywall knowledge
Thanks, I’m glad I can be of help. I highly recommend you read the primer instructions and follow the recoat time. Usually it’s one hour but it’s sometimes four hours so follow their guidelines for best results
I’m doing a home right now that was lifted 8 inches from the foundation, it’s almost cracked allot, I hate when there’s this many cracks 😂 awesome video
How many times I scolded hangers for breaking a board on a door edge or header or leaving a butt on the lid at the corner of a load bearing wall's outside corner ..., I'd rather deal with a full butt than get called back after the house settles. Also under piece for joint support and paper tape your bullnose connection seams ..all of them! I don't care how you installed them mud on , clench, spray glue, nail/screw, they will crack where 2 pieces meet if you do not tape them. I also paper tape or mesh tape the edges of the bead to the wall every time no exceptions as well as all the angles created by wrapped windows and doorways ect. I only made it 16 seconds in this video before commenting , I have faith That Kilted Guy DIY will explain the causes and resolve the issues with ease ! I have a sneaky pro hack for small cracks when the most cost saving solution is needed and it really works .
Yeah, tape any place to pieces of rock come together, including inside windows, and mesh over cornerbead, IF you don't use tape on. On my own house, I would ONLY use tape on bead as it's tougher, doesn't rust and sticks to the wall instead of being fastened to the wall every 8" or so.
Just found your channel, I'm a total beginner at painting and wall preparation, I've stripped a wall that I'm just wanting to paint but whoever put the paper up had gouged several diagnol lines into the cement ( I cant believe this is true for one minute but some folks I've spoken to said that's what some people did to the walls in the beleaf that the paper would hold better, like I say I find that crazy as isn't that what paste is for), So I've got walls that are unsmooth and with purposely made cracks, should I fill the cracks with filler first or skim the walls, I'm at aloss as where to start,
Fill them first by applying mud into the crack and wiping it tight. Love your videos, I’ve watched so many and they have been so helpful in running my solo man handyman business, THANK YOU! My question is why you prefer the yellow mesh tape (thicker) and if you have used the white fine finish tape and your thoughts? Do you use exclusively the yellow and if so, why? I tend to like the white thinner one myself.
For the inside angles: after caulking, do you still mud and tap over it or just leave it as is? I have a diagonal wall crack that merges into a corner separation.
If you use a high-quality caulking like big stretch and the crack wasn’t really large, and you don’t put so much on that it looks like a silver streak running up the angle, then I just caulk it
Hi how are you doing? Out of the hospital I hope! I have a question about popcorn ceilings, one of my clients has it in one of the rooms, she just bought the house, the room had a makeshift closet, we took it down and noticed the ceiling it was flat, do you recommend to take the finish or should we attempt to make the finish?
Question about using hot mud with mesh tape. Can you use other types of mud (all purpose or Plus 3) for the subsequent layers after embedding the tape? Or do you need to use hot mud for every layer? #DoItRight
You just need to use it for the first coat. Here’s the link to join my TH-cam membership. m.th-cam.com/users/sponsor_channel/UCSinsqowcKxmSaKkx3W9_0w?noapp=1

You mentioned a long-haul covid. I have had bad breathing problems since I got covid two years ago and it hasn't gone away. I've had X-rays done and nothing shows up. I'm sure it has something to do with it because I never had problems before but what I don't understand is it has been 2 years and my breathing has not gotten any better, actually I think it's gotten worse.

What kind of mud did you use for the second coat? With mesh tape, once it’s been embedded with the first coat, it’s okay to use all purpose or topping for the second and third coats, correct?
It works fine, but I get by just fine with nothing but Plus 3, so why swap around and have to carry so many different muds? I've tried topping many times and couldn't tell the advantage. Kind of like handing Slash a cheap guitar, he'll make it sound damn amazing. I'm that way with mud, I can make them all work for me so why switch so much. I switch some, but try to limit it. And topping CAN NOT be used for the first coat on cornerbead, so there's that limitation. Plus 3 does it all so I mostly use that.
Wouldnt it be easier to scrape a channel around the crack to fit the tape to avoid having a hump and prevent so many coats of mud to blend it in with the surrounding area?
I can do it this way faster and it doesn’t show but I have been doing this since I was a kid and I’m 61 years old. For novices it might be faster for you to scrape it out. I remove the joint tape if it peels off easily but this was done with mesh tape the first time by the mobile home company who tried to fix it without fixing the foundation and it just failed again. The mesh tape didn’t want to come off easily so I did it this way.
The rule for watering down drywall mud is, if you feel like it’s making you work too hard to spread it, thin it down. If it’s dripping too much, you thinned it down too much.
I’m hanging drywall in a bathroom. I’ve seen conflicting things and what type of tape to use. Do I need to use fiber tape or is paper tape ok? I want to do it once and #DoItRight
There’s no tape requirement for bathrooms. However if you use mesh tape you have to use fast setting mud. I recommend all purpose and fibafuse for novices but paper tape works fine if you can do it without getting blisters. I teach that in several videos though

AND GOOD TO SEE YOUR DOING OK. TELL CLAIR I SAID HELLO
Hi Doug, good to hear from you. (This is Carla) Have a fabulous day…
I own my own business starting out and have not textured yet.
How many times I scolded hangers for breaking a board on a door edge or header or leaving a butt on the lid at the corner of a load bearing wall's outside corner ...,
I'd rather deal with a full butt than get called back after the house settles.
Okay, well I have a huge stress crack to mend. Now I know what to do. I hope I don't mess it up!
Great work and presentation thank you again.
Good information. Thanks. I have a sloping ceiling. What is the best way to butt new drywall to it?
Just found your channel, I'm a total beginner at painting and wall preparation,
I've stripped a wall that I'm just wanting to paint but whoever put the paper up had gouged several diagnol lines into the cement ( I cant believe this is true for one minute but some folks I've spoken to said that's what some people did to the walls in the beleaf that the paper would hold better, like I say I find that crazy as isn't that what paste is for),
So I've got walls that are unsmooth and with purposely made cracks, should I fill the cracks with filler first or skim the walls, I'm at aloss as where to start,
Fill them first by applying mud into the crack and wiping it tight. Watch videos in this playlist to learn more before you tackle anything.

I tend to like the white thinner one myself.
yellow is easier to find, and i can make both work just as well
How did you get the hot mud to look like the same exact color as the wall?
For the inside angles: after caulking, do you still mud and tap over it or just leave it as is? I have a diagonal wall crack that merges into a corner separation.
If you use a high-quality caulking like big stretch and the crack wasn’t really large, and you don’t put so much on that it looks like a silver streak running up the angle, then I just caulk it
HAY THERE MY FRIEND GREAT INFO BUDDY FROM DOUG
Bravo! Thanks for the great content!

What do you think about putting a little hot mud to hold the tape on instead of adhesive?
Over mesh, you should use hot mud. Adhesive is optional
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY Oh ya, I meant putting a little hot mud down before the mesh, like you do taping seams with paper tape. Unnecessary?
It’s not necessary.

3 & 1/2 years later and I’m still fighting issues from it

What kind of mud did you use for the second coat?
With mesh tape, once it’s been embedded with the first coat, it’s okay to use all purpose or topping for the second and third coats, correct?
AP or Plus 3 after embedding it
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY thanks. I was taught that topping compound is good to use for a third final coat. Do you not like topping compound?
It works fine, but I get by just fine with nothing but Plus 3, so why swap around and have to carry so many different muds? I've tried topping many times and couldn't tell the advantage. Kind of like handing Slash a cheap guitar, he'll make it sound damn amazing. I'm that way with mud, I can make them all work for me so why switch so much. I switch some, but try to limit it. And topping CAN NOT be used for the first coat on cornerbead, so there's that limitation. Plus 3 does it all so I mostly use that.
How long do you wait after using the texture sponge to knock down the repair ?
Mostly till most of the gloss subsides
Getting ready to fix some cracks. #DoItRight
What mud were/are you using for 2nd coats and final skim coats? Hot mud work? Or green (all purpose) or blue lid work for final coats?
Tape = mesh and hot mud. Usg +3 for the rest
*WOW NICE BEAUTIFUL 👍*
Question in regards to putting screws on to prevent more cracking, what about lathe and plaster. That can't be done right?
Probably not
do you water down your joint compound when you are skim coating?
The rule for watering down drywall mud is, if you feel like it’s making you work too hard to spread it, thin it down. If it’s dripping too much, you thinned it down too much.
Thanks for the info! I am about to attempt to fix my first cracks and your video was so insightful TY!
Hillarious!!!!!! Make more of these videos. We all need a good laugh.
Are you using hot mud for knock down?
No
Is this where we ask questions or ask for advice?
Yes if it’s simple
What is your video for the how to make the sponge for the texture Repair
Search for, “knock down texture with a sponge, That Kilted Guy”
can you use fiberfuse and hot mud?
Yes
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY ok thanks.
What is the actual name of hot mud
Usg Lightweight fast setting joint Compound
I’m hanging drywall in a bathroom. I’ve seen conflicting things and what type of tape to use. Do I need to use fiber tape or is paper tape ok? I want to do it once and #DoItRight
There’s no tape requirement for bathrooms. However if you use mesh tape you have to use fast setting mud. I recommend all purpose and fibafuse for novices but paper tape works fine if you can do it without getting blisters. I teach that in several videos though
Thanks appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
where are you located?
Colorado
