For anyone looking for a horror movie to watch, I suggest "Hereditary". It has a few jumpscares but the whole movie just has this weird, uncomfortable feeling. Like, you know when you wake up in the middle of the night and there's weird movies playing on channels? That's how it feels to watch it. Very unsettling.
I absolutely hated that movie. There was one scary part that happened at the end...the rest was just sad and depressing.
The director of hereditary also directed Midsommar which is also a really eerie psychological thriller

I saw Gonjiam last night with some friends over discord and I discovered that I laugh when I’m nervous, so when the guy and ghost started screaming I sounded like a maniac laughing my ass off 😭😭

Same girl / bro same issue . I was seeing the entity movie with my friend and suddenly a jumpstart came and I laughed so crazily that I scared her more than the ghost itself lol

honestly Gongjiam was the scariest movie I've ever seen. I've watched it 3 times and I get TERRIFIED each time, so thanks for starting with that one and not having a warning, I almost had a heart attack xD

I usually watch horror movies with my friends or my mom. Cuz I like to laugh at their expressions. I don't watch they alone cuz i ALWAY get mad at the protagonist. like "HOW COULD YOU BE SO STUPID!?"

the first movie clip that were shown is titled "Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum". The film became the third most watched horror film in South Korea after Phone (2002) and A Tale of Two Sisters (2003).
I watched it with my friends hoping that i'll get through without crying but no haha i cried. It's VERY VERY SCARY. Don't watch it if you can't handle movies like that. One of the best scary movies i've seen so far
Sounds like a fun movie lmao and I love a tale of two sisters! though I felt more sad than scary like i remember crying my eyes out at the end when you kind of got the whole plot revealed. But I'll have to check the other two out!

The appeal of Gonjiam is it relays heavily on human emotions than the ghost itself. And I really liked that also the bonus is it doesn't have jump scares so to me that was also plus
I'm American but I've always loves E. Asian ghost stories/ movies/games because they're different and more interesting.
As a Chinese person myself they're kind of the same as American ones there's really no difference but instead they just put a little East Asian cultural monsters inside the scary moives
@@Maymay-c That's not really true. The problem with a lot of western horror is more how they actually do the horror elements. Especially in Hollywood where the goal is to get as much widespread reach as possible so they focus too much on making uninspired jump scares and very little subtlety. Obviously there are some exclusions but for the majority of western horror it's all very samey. Films without Hollywood producers breathing down the film maker's necks are the ones that usually stand out. A great example is Kairo and it's American remake Pulse. The original is genuinely creepy and unsettling that fully embraces letting a scene be creepy by itself and using a lot of quiet and subtle imagery to set it's atmosphere. The remake interoperates that as "what if instead it was a bald ghostly man spider who jumps out of things to scare people?"

Train to Busan and Shaun of the Dead were probably my favourite zombie movies of all time, but I think Insidious is the scariest ghost movie I've seen... I don't know what it is about it that makes me feel that way, but I have nightmares for long periods of time every time I watch it TwT

The Ring actually originated from Japan, it was adapted by Hollywood. So I think this does not count as from the West.

@@thaisyamamoto6032 yeah, makes no sense to have the american adaptation of the original Japanese instead especially if it's in the east section lol
The adaptation is definitely from the west though. Ring as well as Juon have a very different feel in the american versions. Compared to the japanese versions, the level of psychological horror is toned down by a lot.
While there can also be a lot of psychological horror in western movies, eastern movies excel in psychological horror. I also think that this makes horror movies that focus on the natural instead of the supernatural way better in east asia.
I wish they'd had a look at a recent korean series called "Hell Is Other People" which in my opinion is a really good example of a korean series that does psychological horror well.
I don't know why they put it on the eastern side since they used the U.S. version...maybe it was just a mistake?

In the original phone movie there's a scene that even yrs later I don't think I've seen anyone else pull it off as brilliant as her! It's the scene where the little girl is standing on the top of the stairs and is shouting and swaying! I mean I thought she done a fantastic job especially as she only looked 6yrs old!!
