Hi Tom as someone who runs a beef unit finishing 1500 head a year best advice I could give is to put in a weigh bridge for lorries can weigh in a load of cattle or feed. buy all your feed in bulk mix your own ration. Don’t stick to 1 factory always have options. And buy the cattle yourself don’t use dealers. put in a handling system that can be used by 1 person

Spot on advice just one other thing I would add is that you need to be flexible with what you buy, you can make a profit on cows heifers bulls or bullocks and they don’t have to be beautiful either, buy healthy stock and have a cut off weight below which you will not go . Truthfully we have ( I was going to say probably but I have the figures here in front of me and I am definite) made more from cull dairy cows than any other cattle we have feed , the only drawback with them is that you have a lower density stocking rate in the shed, however to counter this they only need to be fattened not grown so they turn pretty quickly. I would also add that if you are just going to finish cattle you need to remember that protein drives growth and is your most expensive ingredient in your ration. Best of luck with the enterprise however a word of warning, the balance between profit and loss is razor thin at this game and if you make too many mistakes you are going to be losing money and you are not going to make money all the time even if you do everything right. Another important point is that the profit on a beast is calculated on the value of the animal that leaves minus its cost of production and the cost of its replacement, what the beast cost is relevant only to the margin for the animal that went before it. Hey Tom.
I'm a 33 nearly 34 year old beef cattle Farmer from West Germany. NRW.
I've started in 2013 my Beef cattles an now I got 220 and building a shed for the next 180 to get up to 400. Also I'm building a Silage Plate. Here we don't do clamps like yours.
I'm feeding Stock from 4-5 up to 18+20 month. The biggest amount of Them is Pedigree Holstein. Some crosses with Angus, Belgian and Fleckvieh.
All my Bulls are on Straw. In Germany we get Money from the EU for feeding Beefers on Straw.
If I can give you one good Tip.
Don't do Wholecrop.
Maize is the Goal for feeding Beefers.
Some good Barley Straw for structure, nice wet Gras Silage. Maize and Cake.
I'm feeding 40% of Gras in the TMR. Here the most Farmers feedding nearly 100% Maize. If you're able to get raw milled Maize, you must add 1 kg per head to the diet. The Bulls are flashing on from the dry Maize. It's unbelivable.
Fingers crossed, you're Project will BE Up in short time.
And hey, please buy a vertical Mixer. There so much better for Beef and Maize in the TMR.

Hi Tom, think about how you can arrange the shed layout to be able to offload animals from the delivery wagon, steam clean the cattle box out, and refill with the animals ready to go off. looking for any chance to use a return/back load could save a fortune on your annual haulage costs unless of course you are selling your fit animals ex-farm gate.
You are dead right about slurry being thicker under beef stock. One little tip, run a pipe from the downpipes on the new shed to the under slat tanks. With a diverter valve on the down pipe you can let rain water into the tank if needed for mixing purposes.

Just a quick one on the grazing piece. I don’t think 4 paddocks is enough. I would try split each of your 4 paddocks in half again (even just with a reel and pigtail posts). Aim to graze each paddock in 3-4 days, and regrow it in 3 weeks (weather dependent!). With 8 paddocks you now have a 24-25 day rotation and newer fresher grass coming to the stock all the time which will really help with growth rates! If growth flys on, take out a paddock and bale it. If it’s lagging a bit, either put in some supplement (concentrate or a bale in a round feeder) and just try to maintain rotation length.
Just my opinion, but hope it’s some help!

Tom bit of advice don’t use the pillar system in the under ground tank. I know you are saying that you are installing an air bubbling system . But if the slurry in the tank gets to thick and you need to agitate the tank with a slurry mixer the pillars will disrupt the flow of slurry and make mixing the tank a lot more difficult use a concrete wall instead which are short at both ends creating a channel which makes the slurry flow much easier and leaves the tank easier to agitate have plenty of experience dealing with these tanks. Advice. Handling. Make it easy, make it safe. Automate weighing and recording including feed to enable accurate figures. Guess work is no good.

Tim as a American feedlot owner a couple thing is have scales for trucks for when you buy in bulk handling system that can be done by one person and get the cattle yourself or have a trusted cattle buyer and have multiple places that you can send cattle to and not just send to the same buyer

When everything is running smoothly, thats when you stop. Nothing needs to expand infinitely.
a lot over here expanded to the limit in dairy over the last few years .........some are very much regretting it now .......they have very little extra in their pockets after all the extra work and stress that goes with all the extra stock ........

Brilliant to hear this Tom.. I’d advise go an buy your own instead of a middle man/woman and don’t stick to the one factory.. shop around and get the best price each week.. Look at Simmental stock as they’re always cheaper through the ring but weigh like lead when hung up!
You should consider getting one self propelled mixer/feeder and use it for both places, the home farm and the rented farm. This way you wouldn't need a second mixer, tractor and shear grab, you could safe a lot of time by not having to switch machines all the time and your clamp would always be nice and tidy. Many farms (250+ animals) here in Germany are doing it this way and have great success with it.
Iknow your Dad is very very proud of you. I bet he never dreamed of you all getting that big.
I like the idea of the handling yard, have plenty of space around the crush for a desk and laptop, even have a work bench sink area for medicines and alike .Have a drafting gate, possibly a four way one, for the different weights and conditions. Also have a dedicated area for loading the cattle onto trucks. have the pens the same size as the compartment on the trucks, so you can load a batch at a time, saves a bit of stress for the cattle.
Congratulations, Tom! You’ve worked incredibly hard over the past five or six years since your channel took off, and you’ve grown right along with it. Who would have thought that the BBC would be asking you for an interview on their morning show? By taking the reins at the farm and expanding the business thoughtfully, you’ve shown your father that the family legacy is in good hands.
We did beef for many years before moving over to more store cattle. Couple things watch the blue steers for fat they can need a lot of feed to get them fat enough. Second, check that the slaughterhouse doesn't have a weight limit. Where we sold would pay you for anything over a certain weight! I believe it was 420kg ish dead weight. This is crazy if you really think about it. Hope all your dreams and wishes come true.
Tom, my suggestion for the weighing of cattle would be to reach out to a Mettler Toledo dealer and see if they would be able do ear tags with rfid that is specific to the single cow. So when you weigh it, it will upload to a spreadsheet to easily track gain and loss. This way it’ll speed up the process. Because time is money.
RFID eartags with a reader on the scales to automatically record the weight that feeds into your cattle manager system

I’m not a fan of a slatted shed I’m a strong believer in cattle should have ample of fresh straw everyday ! Be wary of grazing with British blues they will melt if the weather turns for worst , definitely go for a LELY Juno for pushing up feed . Have you thought about buying in calves and having them on a milk machine feeder ? I really hope it works out for you I love seeing people’s success

In New Zealand, store cattle are brought and sold by the kg, so the livestock truck will empty weigh at the nearest convenient weigh bridge to the farm then go load up and travel back to weigh bridge to weigh again and then the farmer will pay per kg that arrives the fairest way to do it I reckon

I grew up on a dairy farm and we had some beef animals too. My step brother raises Angus with a bit of Bison blood in them in South Berewick, Maine and the beef is absolutely amazing.
Just when I try to imagine what else you can be into … here it is! I bet it is so very exciting! Your dad must be over the moon to see how what he has worked on has expanded!

As a beef farmer, it really has to be said that this won’t be a profitable exercise. It sounds more like a business man looking for a hobby in farming. Beef farming is very volatile as everyone well knows but farming 550 beef cattle that aren’t the best bred won’t even pay for that new shed. It will be a great watch my only reservation is the slightly unrealistic side of starting this venture. An Irish beef finisher.

I am still getting good grass, but I no I can do better.
I have a good muck spreader now for spreading, so the future looks good but has to start with the grass, and as your dad says it all about feeding the worms and grass.

I'm pretty excited about this new development, I'm here for the projects and the growth of the business, less so for "good clean bottoms" if I'm perfectly honest. Keep it up mate, the future is bright if you can keep the government out of your business...vet bills, equipment and fuel, time, man hours, fencing, feed, weather, vehicles, livestock, all the fun costs and risks

The belgian blues are nice. But you really need to give them some power food. Used to have them here (i am from belguim) We switched to limousin because they are a lot less maintenance. They care less about what you feed them and will do fine on the pasture with some aditional feed. Totally different charakters.
With the blues you can do whatever. While limousines are smarter and spook easy. Alway be carefull with them.
Also a nice breed to look at is blonde d'aquitaine they are related to the limousines. And get really big in the hight axis. Making them heavier then they look.
True. My neighbour has Limousines. We're in Portugal in the Alentejo and it's very hot and bone dry here. All they are eating is standing hay and thriving.
