From what I gather, he's interested in letting people wonder about whatever it is they want to. But to successfully do that, one needs to let go of things like finding the evil, searching for god, etc.
I hope that helps the understanding a bit. The snake is within us all, it's the analogy for obsession, rage, and resentfulness over essentially meaningless things. People die, how or why doesn't matter. Honor them if you feel like it, but that also doesn't matter in the end. I remember my mom, she passed before I became an adult; and I make sure she'd have been proud. But I'm not mad at cancer, resentful for doctors not discovering at a saveable state, and I refuse to hate myself for not being there when she died. Stuff happened, horrible stuff. But stuff nonetheless, and that's all there is to it.
The real meaning is the one you create for yourself, and when you realise that, you'll truly be okay.

I’ve been very sad the couple of days. Very very sad. I saw my mom on the video call and noticed she was getting older. Mortality hit me like a truck. When I saw my happy dog after a long work shift, wagging her tail at the sight of me, I started bawling. Every night, I was grieving for all the people I know. It made me very sad that all of the things I know now will disappear.
Thank you for this story. I’ve been reflecting on it. I don’t feel as okay right away but I just know I soon will. As everyone and everything should, we’ll all be okay.

This video made me realize that my beliefs that I was so confident about not even an hour ago are meaningless. I thought that I was satisfied with knowing that there's no reason for us to be here, and that's okay. But I realized that this whole time I was still looking for a meaning, and if I couldn't find one, I'd make one up. I think that deep down I believed that the meaning was to understand and know all, as has always been my goal. I never thought about how that belief is an insatiable one, one that can only lead to unhappiness, dissatisfaction, and even despair, just like if I had an insatiable lust for power like the kings and dictators of the past. I don't know what to think anymore. I understand why philosophers have always struggled with the question of the meaning of life now. I'm just rambling now, but I think this video really did change my life, or at least my outlook on it. I don't know anymore

I'm in a time of my life where I'm currently questioning if I should continue on or not, as everything has just gotten so tiring and stressing for me. I distinctly remember watching this years ago, and not understanding it or it’s message. It resonates hard with me now, after losing my brother. I think... that I'm okay now. We aren't meant to be happy all the time, and that's what makes happiness so precious. It's rare, and while we have it, it's enough. We shouldn't give up, but we shouldn't hurt ourselves thinking that we're lower than we are. When we measure ourselves by the future, we'll never be happy. We've got everything we could imagine. And maybe in the future, we'll have more.

This will be the third comment I've left on this video in the last 6 months. I've rewatched this more times than I can count. Something about this video is able to comfort me in a way that nothing else can. I am not in a good mental state right now, and I genuinely feel like I don't want to live anymore. When my thoughts start spiraling and I can't think of anything but death and pain, I come back to this video. I basically know the story by heart at this point, but every time I watch it, it comforts me and makes me just a little hopeful that things will get better. It’s what saved me from depression! To realise the lack of meaning in life, I think, brings more freedom and choice in who we are. Live life the way we want it.
During a period of life, I went on chased windmills. I wanted to always better, never content with effort. I always found something wrong, and I was feeling miserable, but I had one single thread holding me up "When I will have finish with school, everything will be okay" "When I will move out, everything will be okay", "When I will find someone, everything will be okay" but it never was okay.
One day, I looked back, and I had everything, Everything. Major of my school, a really good job, friends and loved ones, a good place to live in but it wasn't okay. Nothing was okay. I stumbled on this video at this moment.
One night, I nearly attempted to do what I today consider a mistake, but at the time, it felt like the only way. I did still push for one last time, last diagnosed with some really bad depressive state, and got help. Psy, meds, you know the drill.
One of the things that helped me push through the hardest day was the thought that "There is no snake". And today, still, this is a sentence I often say.
I will not say that this story saved my life, because it simply wouldn't be true, but it helped me to heal when days were bleak. Soon, I will get a tatoo, "There is no snake". I strongly believe Exurb1a will never see it, but in the event that you do, thank you good man. This video and your content (& books) helped me a lot to heal, and I am forever grateful.
I can not express how much I love and appreciate this video. I have watched it so many times, especially when I was at my lowest, darkest moments. And even now, years later. It is beautiful. Truly beautiful.

My best friend at the time showed me and watched this video with me several years ago. We are no longer friends and have never discussed this video aside from the one time we watched it. Back then, I was much younger and couldn't stomach nihilism as a concept. I was so scared of the possibility of not mattering. Now, I have grown immensely and am significantly much more at peace with nihilism as a way of thinking. This piece of media is one of the best depictions of nihilism that I've seen. We are made of most of the same things and mechanisms (mental emotional physical etc...) we just happen to be more complex on most levels so "being allergic to happiness" is almost infinitely more common in humans but animals can be too. Go to a crazy cat house and start studying their psychology/behavior and emotions and youll see animals are capable of some pretty complex shit inside the ol noggin

Well written. I took the elements as being related to going through the five stages of grief, as though each item was the reward you come away that empowers you further once you get through that stage and conquer it. After denial you find truth, after anger you find control, after what-if-ing and wishing you find reality/emotional or literal sobriety, after depression you find resilience, and after acceptance you keep the memories.
