In the day, 1965. I bought a used 1959 Impala sport coup, with the stock 348, 4 barrel, and the awful Turbo Glide transmission. That all changed when a friend that raced a 348 on a short circle track, gave me suggestions to improve the 348 Chevy engine. The engine was pulled and over bored .030 , fitted with Jahns Power Slot pistons, forged rods with a full balance. Late 1961 heads with dual valve springs, late 1961 tri-power intake, along with 1961 exhaust manifolds. Solid lifter Chevy 348, 335 HP cam, 409 oil pump, dual point distributor with out vacuum advance. Muncie 4 speed transmission with fitted bench seat T handle reverse loc out shifter. Rear gears from 3.08 open to 3.70 posi. The only problem I had was on first start up, it wouldn't. When the stock AC 44 XLS spark plugs were pulled, every one of the electrodes were smashed because of the different style piston tops. I ended up using the AC 44 XLS with 3 spark plug washers under each spark plug after that. I had no idea except for some speculation, that HP could have been around 345 to 350 at the time. It was a fast car and a real sleeper, one that I let get away sadly. How I wished I could have stored it away for some day in the future. Gone but never forgotten. Drop dead gorgeous car in the video, thanks for the memories.
59 Impala was the first car I owned while still in high school in 1967. Borrowed $225 from Meijer's where I worked stocking shelves and bagging groceries ( everything was paper bags back then. Soft drinks still came in glass bottles, no corn syrup used but just a year later Coca Cola destroyed the flavor by changing its formula. Today most foods don't taste anywhere as good as then did back then including meat, fruits and vegetables.
one thing that does not seem included in the tons of TH-cam videos about the performance vehicles of this era, is the sound of whatever carburetor opening up when one's foot hit the floor. Absolute ROAR!
In 1971, I bought a theft recovery triple black '48 convertible. Was [although removed/stolen] a 348 4v three speed on the column car with a/c, power steering and power brakes. The interior had been removed by the thieves, as well, but the car was good. Just needed a drivetrain and seats. It received the 409, 4-gear and the interior from a '63 Super Sport. Surprisingly easy interior refit. Drivetrain virtually bolted in. Wish I had it back...
Boy. People hated these cars when they came out, I guess in what, September of 1958 ... can't remember that,. exactly. The rear end made people very unhappy. But boy, this one is killer. The 1960 was very well accepted on the other hand. Even still, my favorite non-Corvette of all time, was the 1961 bubble top Impala. What a striking thing of forward motion beauty ...
Mi uncle had one those in the 60s it was white and so beautiful I used to feel so big riding in I though London it was the Nuts and so is your one if I win the lottery tonight I’m coming to get him it’s gorgeous. Larry in London xx
when they did build real things. They were built to take some parts and live for ever, now they are built to last 10 years, and go to garbage. Now, we live in a different world. If they dont sell thye have to close , the problem is overoduction and very fast production,. They dont care, they win more money with this. And buyers lOOSE!
I don't think they had power steering then did they..altho i can see it does. And it's automatic,, from what I could tell. What a shame... That motor has got a lot to give ..
If I had to choose a classic American car I'd choose a black Chevy impala 59 the 2 door is such a beautiful looking car, you can keep yer shelby Mustangs, cameros, chalengers, don't get me wrong they are cool muscle cars but as long as I can remember I have always loved the style of the 59 impala, if I could have any classic I'd love one like yours it is an amazing looking car
I remember how the Ford engineers criticized this model year because at highway speeds especially during rainy wet conditions the rear fins would actually cause lift due to air flow and the driver had control issues.
@@jamesfloyd1864 I am with you brother. I owned a 1970 Oldsmobile Rallye 350 back in the early 90's. Sold it for $8500.00 check out eBay and Hemmings motor news they are selling for 25-30K. Loved it and miss it too.
My first car, white convertable 4 bbl. Paid $150 for it in 1967 Wrecked in in Boston. Wish I kept it and fixed it. Blew off alot of 283 who wondered , WHY? Everyone said it was a garbage truck engine? Later became famous 409
The cars from those days are a rolling work of art

The pinnacle of automotive engineering , the end of an era.
Definitely NOT the pinnacle of automotive engineering. Of automotive design, perhaps, but engineering? Are you kidding me?
Haha, no

Cars from '20 to the '80: 😍
I remember how the Ford engineers criticized this model year because at highway speeds especially during rainy wet conditions the rear fins would actually cause lift due to air flow and the driver had control issues.
I had mine at a hundred MPH lots of times, and that theory was bogus. It handled very well with sway bars and HD shocks, etc.
@@jamesfloyd1864 Maybe FoMoCo was just jealous of the classic design................
@@Itsjustme-j4o There were two things in my life I should have never let go. One was my '59 Chev. And then there is Helen.
@@Itsjustme-j4o I had a modest California rake on mine, and I think the fins actually acted like spoilers.
