I usually wouldn't upload a new collection video so soon after my previous one (which is my MOST viewed video of all time!) but I'm in the process of moving my library into a new room and wanted to let everyone see how it was coming! FAQ’s
I answer a lot of frequent questions in the last part of this video, but for those I forgot or hadn’t gotten before, here we go!
I didn’t get this question before as my room had no windows, but people are now asking if I’m concerned about sunning, or damage to the books caused by sunlight.
Answer; not really. I’ve been collecting for almost 20 years and have learned more or less how much or how little light it will take to fade or yellow these books. This room does not see a lot of direct sunlight, and I have curtains that will help to block out what does come in. Ultimately I’ll likely get thicker curtains as well. So don’t worry about me and my books, we will be fine.
How often do you clean?
I get this one enough to consider it frequent. I dust as I notice the need, but that’s going to be true of our whole house not just my library. Typically the house is cleaned once a week.
Oh and also; please don’t flood this video with questions about my house burning down or experiencing other disasters. It’s distasteful and dumb. There’s a lot more important things to worry about if something destroyed my home than just what I would do about my books.
Jealous of those Baoh issues. I hope we get Baoh, Araki's other works as well as one shots released in english too.

Why do people act like dusting is such a big deal - especially with books aligned symmetrically on a shelf. You swipe a duster cloth or a swifter thing across - takes 5 minutes

This is so epic! My manga collection is about 1/5 the size of yours, so I'm happy I saw this cause now I don't feel as guilty with my collection. The one manga I really want to collect is Shounen Jump's Reborn. They only translated 16 volumes and stopped. I doubt it'll ever get a reprint, but if it ever does, I'm getting it! And I subscribed, I really like your content!
I used to own it but sold a few years after the last volume they released. Same for Gin Tama. It’s disappointing especially because of how great both those series are/were
That volume 5 of battle royale is my prized possession, what an amazing series. I tend to only collect hardcover editions but your collection is elite, my wife would divorce me if I had that many manga volumes 🤣

The idea of having shelves full of grand detailed stories that you actually own is really appealing to me. With the internet I offen feel like I dont own anything.
That's one reason I like collecting. There's a lot to be said about the psychological aspect of owning physical items and the mindset it puts one in...not that life is all about material things but that doesn't mean it can't be an important aspect if used properly.

I started collecting not too long ago and so far I have 35 books 😩 I don’t actually think I’ll ever get as many as this guy but I do plan to collect for a long while and get as many as I can, collecting books is so fun and I’m starting to get addicted, I’m 13 going to get a license soon and start working at my stepdads tattoo shop as an employee and I’m so excited to get payed and earn my own money to buy my own things (manga ) without asking for help of my parents for now I’m just going to open a bank acc and save for a bit cus I’m now broke now.. I spent all my money on the Tokyo ghoul box set 😀
I would love a video similar to this where you go through your collection but give some rapid fire thoughts and feelings about each series! I know that would be super long so you wouldn’t have to do it all at once you could do like the shonen jump shelf, the central shelf, etc. each as their own video. I think it would be fun to hear a bit about each series rather than having to do a deep review on all of them.
I’d love for you to talk about the drifting classroom. I’m debating on whether or not to buy it

I'm so happy to see others into manga I love, like S-CRY-ED, Samurai Deeper Kyo, Knights of The Zodiac/Saint Seiya, B't X, The Prince of Tennis and some more. Older series like those with Tokyopop and SJ really need more love.
Your shelves are so pretty, I like the choice of having all the SJ titles together. I really need to catch up on my TBR manga lol, I have so many and a bunch of first volumes of stuff to check out.

I like the comment about bridging the gab between manga and western comic readers. They’re all comics, and I love both series and creators from both. Some of my all time favs are manga and European titles, and people who like comics shouldn’t limit themselves by region!

Brother hell of a collection. The only manga I have are the DBZ full color that were released of the sayian saga. If they made Bazerk, Helsing and Blade of the immortal all manga in color man I think they would sell even more. Kickstarter Shonin Jump.

Great to see someone with the same sized collection! My wife and I have surpassed 3k volumes and I'm struggling on how to organise mine and the double sided Kallax is a great idea. Been trying to find some way to split out "library" room into rows and was debating back to back billy bookcases attached on one side to a wall then a row of them going out connected into the room, but concerned about the stability. Also debating saying goodbye to all the Marvel and DC trades that just take up too much room. There's a lot of good Manga on the horizon and more room is needed!
Wow, I started collecting manga recently and was considering making a video about it, and this video just makes me excited for all the titles that I might wanna collect in the future!! I hear it get talked about pretty frequently and a lot of people give it very high praise which makes me want to start collecting it, however I wanna have an idea of what it's about before I do so. Nobody talks about Cross Game enough. I love Adachi’s stuff and would buy any and all of his manga if anything else ever came out in English. I would fork out for hardcover editions of Touch so fast.

Awesome collection. I am one of those that just woke up and decided to start collecting manga lol. However, everything I buy I do intend on reading I just prefer to purchase when they are on sale and Rightstuf has ALOT of sales. In the past 6 months I’ve collected over 500 volumes. I’m a bit of a slow reader so it will probably take me years to read everything but I find a lot of enjoyment so far with reading manga and I’m looking forward reading everything. I would like to see a review on the attack on titan colossal editions. They are currently on sale this week on Rightstuf. I was planning on getting the box sets but unfortunately they are not part of the sale. Would you recommend picking up the colossal editions?

Great video Ryley! It’s nice to see your new organization of manga a video made sense for all your hard work. It’s an impressive collection, and like you said you’ve been collecting for years so getting weekly/monthly books doesn’t seem like too much but over time it very much adds up. Right now for organization is by publisher and size of books. My next re-organizing I will probably keep completed series together and ongoings in another that way it’ll be less moving books around. I’ve been debating on getting Whistle! and Eye-shield 21. Would you do a review of them someday? (No rush I have enough to read right now) Thanks for all your work

2) a library is not always public. Miriam Webster’s definition is “a place in which literary (...) materials are kept for use but not for sale. Oxford defines as “a room in a private house where books are kept”

Awesome tour, Riley! I understand the anime thing. I never watch anything that was based on a book, since I prefer the original material. Yes, I miss on a lot of good films and shows, but hey... One has got more time for reading, right?
As much as a prefer physicals and supporting the creators, thinking of how expensive this all must be and the space requirements, I'm glad I read on tachiyomi lol
That's a great collection. Have you ever read detective conan: case closed? It's a fun detective manga series.
I recommend the manga given its only on its 6th volume but its amazing. and I also recommend black butler its my fav series so I hope you like it to.
Make sure to have a dehumidifier, I've lost so many books to mold
That’s not normal. If you’re having mold form on books you have a lot bigger things to be worried about, because the wooden frame of your home could also be forming mold. The home likely needs to have better insulation to stop that from happening. That’s also going to have negative effects on your health. If mold has already been formed on any of the frame it will need to be replaced to keep structural integrity and to stop mold spores from spreading.

Where are the Saiyuki volumes?
I'm telling you this because you might get a chuckle out if it.
A local comic shop is currently having a 'green dot' sale. Anything with a green dot is 90% off. Yes 90%. The green dotted items are trades that have been collected into larger volumes slowing the purchase of the trades, series that just weren't moving, and some omnibuses. The official name they gave the sale was "Get this stuff out of my store so I have more space sale". I guess they did the math and on average they get 500 new trades a year.
While I was looking at the selection a guy came in and started grabbing as many of the omnibuses as possible.
When he had a stack of like 8 or so omnibuses I said to him, "I hope your wife let's you explain about the sale."
He laughed and said his wife already knew.
I ended up with 1000$ dollars worth of stuff for 100$. Been making my way through what I can of what I bought. Some of the series I grabbed isn't complete and some helped complete what I already had.
Jeez haha. I don’t even know where my nearest LCS is to know about any sales they would do, but that would be nice to peruse.

So let's do some back-of-the-hand math, because I'm so curious.
Let's assume he gets good deals on all his manga. He mentioned getting some for $1 / volume, and buying box sets which on sale can bring it down to $4-$5 /vol. But I'm sure he has *some* expensive ones. So let's assume $6/volume.
At that price, 2400 volumes is $14,400. He said he was collecting since 2003, so since it is now 2021 that would average to $800 / year on the low end. Since he also collects DC comics, figures, and other products I could see him spending approx $1500 / year.
That's not as bad as you think considering some people spend that much on the new iphone each year. Plus this collection maintains value a lot better than iphones should he ever want to sell.
So yeah, overall not as unmanageable as you might think. Certainly not attainable by everyone. But not as out of reach as others are making it out to be.
Probably about twice that per year.

Lately I’ve been reading Taiyo Matsumoto’s No.5. There were only 2 volumes that were translated into English, but it was discontinued because of low sales. I heard that this Summer that the series is gonna be re-released, so hopefully we get the entire series altogether.

One time I was playing a board game with a bunch of my cousins and I used the word ruffian to describe a character from the game. They all started laughing at me for pronouncing the word as roof-ian instead of how it should be pronounced rough-ian. I had only ever read the word in Bleach where it's used quite a bit and had never heard it aloud. They never let me live that one down so I know your pain. 😭💔Anyway, a superb collection as always!

You’d be surprised how much stress a single volume of manga can withstand. I had a wall of books about four feet high and ten feet wide a couple of years ago. It was impossible to get anything off the bottom row, but they never saw any damage at all

Excellent collection, Ryley! I'm a buy-to-read collector as well. Unfortunately I'm not able to delve into collecting a ton of manga at the moment, but I do own all of Dragon Ball/DBZ and Super along with Yu Yu Hakusho (finally found Vol 5 and that's on the way). Out of curiosity, have you read the Black Lagoon manga? I'm starting the anime soon and am curious about the manga. Also, I'd like to see you review of contents of that Ghost in the Shell box set down the line. :)
