Like cabbages more now than I did as a youngun, but would rather have them steaks fried up in some bacon grease. We always had cabbage slices that were a little bit thinner with bacon strips on top and baked in the oven. Sometimes cabbage slices had meatloaf patties on top, without any ketchup or other topping. And there were some that had leftover mashed taters on top with onions and garlic powder mixed in and paprika on top of that, but the cabbage slices were sopped in some bacon grease on both sides first. If you've got younguns that don't like the strong taste and smell of cabbages, b. sprouts are the best way to start to season their pallette. Even fry sauerkraut in bacon grease, especially to go on Reuben sandwiches, it dries out the kraut to keep it from sogging up the bread and stops kraut juice from dripping down your arm, but it gives it even more incredible flavor if you cook it until it's well caramelized throughout. It's a serious game changer.
Didn’t have any bacon drippins- but I did top each cabbage steak with a few slices of Vidalia plus a slice of bacon. Thanks for suggesting this recipe. Loved it. The cabbage baked up sweet and tasty.
I'm 'almost' too embarrassed to say this, BUT, I'm in my lower 60s, & I just learned this about six months ago..... that PAPRIKA is RED PEPPER. Really? I was shocked. 😳 I remember having paprika in the spice cabinet when I was about five years old. We always sprinkled our deviled eggs with it. 👍🏻 🌶
No it is NOT red pepper. It is defined as"Paprika is typically made from “bell” or “sweet” type peppers, milder varieties that contain a recessive gene that eliminates (or greatly reduces) capsaicin, the compound responsible for heat."
