- This is a love letter to Microsoft - or more like an intervention. Love isn’t how most Microsoft users would describe their feelings towards Microsoft, especially recently. I know we haven’t exactly been on the best terms since, well, Windows 8, but that’s also where things started going wrong, and frankly they’ve only really been spiralling since then. This is a plea to please, for the good of everyone, stop the hostility towards the people that literally pay you to be their operating system. Let me explain…

my favorite point was when they said windows 10 was the last version of windows. i was happy then.
they did the right thing when they dropped support of window 10, they cant keep up optimizing it for DDR3, DDR4 and DDR5 PCs
especially the laptops with very outdated divers .
@@Rayu25Demon that doesnt make any sense at all. its even funnier when you consider that win10 and win11 have the exact same driver model and drivers from win10 just work in win11. also, optimizing for RAM was never a thing
@@davidpodeszwa7010 if you were repairing laptops you will notice windows 10 build between 2015-2017 have no issues with old laptops drivers and works fine
but with newer windows10 builds its not, the fault is not from Microsoft its from laptop manufactures.
if the manufacture wont support his 1-2 years laptop with newer OS don't expect for Microsoft to do the same.
many laptops from windows 8.1 and windows10 (2015-2017 builds) era had drivers problems because if you are using them with older drivers
most problems i have seen were with intel hd ( you have to install specific driver version so windows can detect the amd or NVidia gpu) . atheros bluetooth and wifi, realtek Ethernet the sound drivers of Conexant.
most of these problems was not Microsoft, im not saying every laptop model have these problems.

@@Rayu25Demonfun fact but windows has had the same code and language since 95. It’s the same shit so there was never a reason to stop support for really any version. If they wanted to they could still have support for XP.
It was the last version of Windows. For me. I left it in 2017 and never used it again.
They already lost me to Linux about 9 months ago. I have no regrets. Windows 7 was so good.

@@rkadowns Ah, not what I'd expect a Win7 migrator would use (at least assuming it's the main KDE install - which feels more like Unity/Lomiri) but it is a good one assuming you're fine with Arch.
I also did switch to Linux (currently Mint) but I do miss Gaming on Windows!
@@techrazor3280 dual boot! It's a valid solution. Though, really, Heroic, Bottles, and Lutris should cover most of Windows gaming.
Been using nothing but Windows since version 3.1, when I was 5 years old. Until now. I finally installed Linux earlier this month, because I'm tired of being exploited by MS. Dual-boot for now. Still learning the ropes. I fire up Windows for gaming and other apps that require it. Haven't gotten around to trying Proton just yet. But I'm using Linux more and more for general everyday use like browsing, communication, and media consumption. It feels nice. It feels... liberating.

yeah, that's the route i took 4 years ago, eventually i got tired of booting into windows for some things and just started running windows-only programs through proton/wine or under VMs. Linux takes a bit to learn but it's worth it
I switched to Linux when Windows 11 was announced and have been very happy with it. It has given me such peace of mind knowing my OS isn't tracking me. I haven't felt like this since early Windows. It's kind of like changing from sleeping in a busy urban area to the countryside and realising how quiet it is.
My advice is to get and use the application "Timeshift" when on Linux. It is basically System Restore for Linux, it's super easy to use, and it helps so much knowing that if you mess something up or want to experiment you can roll back your system files to a working state.
The problem is.. home users are such a small percentage of MS's business that they dont give a flying monkeys about us. They have no reason to change, because they can ship windows os on prebuilts etc etc and 99% of users wont change a thing :(
Was going to stick with win10 until the end of support, then my SSD died. So I grabbed a spare drive, and went to Linux Mint. Fine experience, everything worked, including windows only games care of steam and Proton.
Telemetry. I love telemetry and cannot get enough of it.
Can't wait to see what windows 12 brings on this.
AI telemetry. AI ads. Only 24/7 online pc's. Last win I felt in fully control was the 7 after proper setup and debloat. Since then, downhill...

Already dumped Windows for Linux, you'd be surprised how many games do work on it, albeit with some workarounds.

@@TalynOne GTA 5 isn't the only game to ever exist. If it was us Linux gamers would be screwed xD. Plenty of other games though and a lot of them work great.
If all I did was game (particularly online competitive games) then I would probably stick with Windows, but for all the other other things I do on a computer that benefit from me being on Linux, I can live without some games.

@@FengLengshun RP Servers do work but official online doesn't work because of the new battleeye anticheat and rockstar not turning on the toggle for linux compat
I did a test of 100 games across various platforms on Linux (Fedora 40 using X11) and only 5 didn’t work without some kind of extra steps. Only 2 of those I couldn’t get working at all.
The rest worked flawlessly without any further configuration whatsoever, some better than under Windows 11.
Proton and Lutris really are marvels.
I’ve not dumped Windows as there are still a few other games and apps I use that don’t work on Linux, and I see no point in dual-booting… but if Microsoft enshittify Windows further I may reconsider.
I genuinely couldn't believe the install process of Windows 11 for a mate the other night.
The amount of garbage you have to decline before it even asks you for an email is frankly disgusting.
6-8 months ago, Windows 11 took about 15 minutes to install. My mates install took 45 minutes because he HAD to create an Outlook account.
As a guy that builds and repairs PCs and laptops regularly for family and mates, this is a HUGE waste of time, every time
There's a TH-cam channel called Memory's Tech Tips who has a video showing you how to put custom XML files into an official Windows install image that automatically takes out a lot of the garbage for you. My install was back to the original 15 minutes you you were talking about even if you include the time it takes to make the custom file. Look up unattended XML.

Outlook account is required that user can install software from Windows store and users are identified when data is collected.
Probably in few years Home version of Windows is locked to S-mode so Windows would be only useful to use web browser without outlook account.

Even a modern install of windows 10 takes long nowadays with all the settings and questions. If you want a speedy windows look at IoT LTSC for both 10 and 11.
when you say apple didn't care about gamers?.Facts, Steve Jobs, one of the founders of Apple, thought that gamers were lazy and unproductive, and he thought that apple computers should only be used as work machines and not for gaming. But there were others in Apple who thought there was money in selling to gamers and to their old customers.

Windows 10 is also cr@p. I'm staying with Windows 7 but now only as my SECOND operating system, because I discovered Debian Linux is absolutely amazing.

I use Linux, have been enjoying for years, but for those that need windows for their work, win10 LTSC is an option, but the key but to activate it needs to be done with more specific ways(also its unusuable without activation key)

I hate their obsession with LISTS. Worse still, their lists “within” lists. Like someone at Microsoft said “hey, lets chuck out that book on ergonomics and user-friendly menus”. I’m waiting to switch to Apple or Steam OS as soon as their gaming support matures.
The problem with Linux is not Linux. The problem with Linux is companies not supporting it. Adobe, CAD, audio production especially (have fun trying to run all those VST's in a DAW on Linux). Also some game developers. Especially those who want to tie their games to accounts.
Adobe is not worth it. Greedy if not more greedy than Microsoft.
This is the answer. Microsoft doesn't care because most users are stuck with Windows because there is no Linux version of the hardware and software they rely on.
@@JD-vj4go I doubt that the majority of office workers require any such specialist software. Most people need a browser, mail client and a way to have online meetings along with an office suite. I know because my dad, the opposite of a technical user, has been on mint for over 2 years now.
@@roccociccone597 Office workers usually don't pick their OS and it's unlikely they'd care about any of this. If you barely use your PC or only treat it as a catalog or word processor you'd never notice win11 sucks.
@@roccociccone597as an office worker, there's enough pain point with not using MS Office that I just run Windows at work and always have a Windows VM on my Linux laptop for backup (which is just for backup, because once you start to need to use scripts for one thing or another? You do need Excel offline and performance on VM is painful).
It should be a wake up call that the install base for Win11 grew and then SHRUNK. People hate it, so they went back to Win10. Currently Win10 still has the vast majority of the install base and it's looking like it'll stay that way until they get literally forced to switch, which I'm sure micro$oft will try to do ...and then they do there will be a big backlash. Trouble is, with governments and regulatory bodies turning a blind eye, M$ just don't care.
Software companies in general stopped listening to customers. And now just scumming people for another buck. Abuse and manipulation is strongest skill.
This is not limited to the tech industry. Its everywhere even in more essential things like cars. Electric cars from tesla would reduce ur top speed and performance of your car if you dont pay a monthly subscription fee. What an insidious world we live in. Everything is done out of profit and control

I'm another Linux convert. I started with BASIC, then CP/M, MS-Dos, Windows 3.0 etc etc until Windows 8 came out. From then I actively investigated Linux until finally going Microsoft free during the lifetime of W10. Since then I have deleted EVERYTHING that has a Microsoft logo on it and haven't looked back. Windows 11 seems to be a disaster, only released to encourage PC sales after the Pandemic. Look at all the e-waste next year when W10 goes EOL! Scandalous. Now using Linux Mint and MX Linux.
Well said. I remember saving every penny I could to get XP when it first released, now I'm actively holding back on anything new from MS for fear of what pops up next. I just don't trust them at all.

This. Things like this are the reason I decided to ditch Windows and start going Linux full-time. Even my laptop is using Linux Mint. It strikes me how hardheaded Microsoft are when it comes to letting people just do what they want and need to do without having to make an online account.
it's clear the windows OS has been layered on top of decades of tech debt that nobody knows how to adapt. Just look at how miserable connecting bluetooth devices is on the OS
Microsoft has really great UI/UX in their promotional videos. Intuitive workflows, beautiful animations, simplicity and all that. But it never translates to their products. The UI is still as boring, they are now forcing users to use the stuff they don’t really want, they are trying to takeaway as much of users control as they can.

@@devilsoffspring5519 My mom accidentally upgraded to win 11 because of that shittily designed pop-up. She thought she was declining. My brief times with it have been an exercise in frustration. I will definitely be switching to Linux when 10 stops being supported.
@@alexwalker2582Do the switch now, so in time that Windows 10 is out of support, you are comfortable with Linux.
Stop giving yourself the excuse "until I can daily drive Linux" and just do the switch, almost every game works with Linux, system is very stable and the community is big.

It would be cool to have a completely compatible, universal Linux version that runs anything and everything Windows can run but without all the Windows bugs and BS. That would be awesome! Instead of Windows you just install Linux instead and your machine does anything and everything you need it to do, including DX12 and/or Vulkan API gaming with full support for flight sticks (game controllers) and the latest graphics drivers :)
I'm 47 years old and haven't porked around with Linux in ~40 years. I miss being really *into* computers like I was when I was little.
What bother's me most about a potential Linux-switch, for personal use, as a gamer, is that there isn't a definitive guide anywhere on how to switch over.
99% of Linux migration videos are on how good it is to customize or how to use it for productivity.
But for Gaming... very very little.
And those that are there are often countering other videos or are outright outdated.
I really wish for a "Here's the easy Linux guide for gamers 2024 - step-by-step on easy to find software" video.

Since being on the release version of H24H2, my laptop is heating the moment it starts, it's 42°C

Windows 8 (might have been 8.1) added generally about 10% CPU usage just from the Windows update service doing nothing on my old work PC. That in turn, caused the CPU fan to speed up and then the fan got noisy, then someone in the office started shouting at me.
On Mac now and very happy. Was a Windows User for 24 years.
As a company, they need to realize you can lose money and recover.
It's much harder to recover broken reputation.
The only reputation Microsoft ever had was one of buggy, insecure and unfinished software, say for the rare occasion they made something actually functional like Windows 95 and 7.

@@pohodovejrybar5918 Tbf at least apple makes good software (i say this as someone who hates apple and microsoft). Microsoft just makes buggy messes and then charges users tonnes of many for them. So at least when your getting spied on by apple, you get a decent product for it, not what ever the fuck microsoft is doing.
Onedrive replace local folder mydocuments and desktop is super nightmare, who want put your files on the cloud without consent
big pain point on windows: Just random USB unplugged noises. and Windows doesn't natively give you a log of what was plugged in or out, this should be a basic debug feature tbh

Why would they stop? Most will still use them. There will be no reckoning. It will keep getting worse and people will keep accepting it.
Don't conform, it will only get worse if you conform, I know that the average person isn't tech savvy but we need to get the word out and then maybe they will consult an expert. We can stop this together if there are enough of us!

Microsoft really needs to rethink their audio drivers too imo. I shouldn’t be using 5 programs just to get the audio from my daw to discord whereas on mac i can just share the app and it *just works*.
Been using Windows for 25+ years, got really tired of the Microsoft accounts, OneDrive and the many "interesting" decisions made for the UI. Based off of that whole direction where users tried to bypass the accounts and MS saw that as a problem to be patched rather than a warning to just stop MS accounts altogether, I switched over to Linux Mint a couple of months ago and it has been the most refreshing experience I've had with a computer in a decade.

I have a foot on Linux just on preparation to skip windows 11.
One of my machines is running Mint. The others are still on windows 10. And I blocked windows 11 upgrade on all capable machines.
I demand control over my own stuff.
These feature you're complaining about are equivalents to iCloud features that are likewise used by Mac users and generally don't have a pushback the way they do on Windows.
I think the crux of the issue is that MS doesn't enjoy the trust of people on the same level that Apple does. They also don't own a phone platform used by many people so their online services are seen as "optional" by iOS and Android users in a way that iCloud and Google services are not.
But if Windows 11 as bad as it is, I have no hope for Windows 12. I just hope more OS can support gaming.
I've been a purely Linux household for about 10 months. Including my Nvidia 3080 Gaming PC.
It's been absolutely flawless. I haven't had a single game crash or PC crash. And I'd expect at least a couple in 10 months of I were on windows. My FPS is also higher on Linux because of the lack of bloat or overhead. The only downsides are about 3 games that don't work on Linux.
If you were to make the switch (or trial it for a video) I would strongly recommend Fedora KDE. It's more up to date than Debian, Ubuntu, Mint etc and KDE has good support for things like HDR.
I've been using it since release and they keep making it worse and harder to control. I will be SO happy when they depart from Windows 11's bizarre choices.
It seems to me that Microsoft are taking the view that are going to lose market share and Linux is rising so their plan is not to try and keep users but to squeeze the tech illierate who will remain on Windows due lack of knowledge of alternative and lack of 'switching ability' and pro-users/companies are locked into Windows - outlook, Adobe, AutoCAD, et al, and squeeze them as hard as they can.
Less users but charge them 3 times as much... the Apple model.
Er, I jumped to Linux 12 years ago. I foresaw this day. It's worked out well for me but I made sure I stayed away from any propitiatory software.
Yep I switched the day windows 10 released. I was already dual booting before but have been windows free since. And boy have our lives gotten easier in the past 4 years.
I've been using Linux since the days of Mandrake. I basically just started with a dual boot solution on two different drives. Still did most stuff on Windows and used Linux as a playground. No issue when I got stuck, I just reinstalled without fear of loosing data. Even problems which could be easily be solved in hindsight got this treatment. Often I learned how to solve an issue randomly and long after I ran into it. The benefit of this approach was that I never had an immediate problem which I had to solve now. I could just go back to my main Windows installation and wait a week, or a month.
At a certain point I realized that I just never logged into Windows anymore. For me the moment of realization came when I logged in and got a huge list of updates. So at that point I decided to remove Windows and reclaim the space.
Microsoft lost me to Linux over two years ago, barely ever even boot Windows on anything these days and when i do its just because a company refuses to release software thats needed on my platform of choice.
Why doesn't Microsoft listen to its users and consumers to make their operating system much better in the future, so far I think the best Windows is still Windows 7. Even though I'm using Windows 10 now, haha..
The thing with Linux is if the provider of your OS (your distro) does something you don't agree with, you can pick one many other distros that aren't doing that. If you don't like the direction your Desktop Environment is going, someone will probably make a fork of it.
Imagine a world where when Windows 8 came out, another company took the Windows 7 source code and just maintained that version of Windows with up to date security patches. This happens all the time in the Linux world but with Windows being proprietary closed source software it is straight up illegal for anyone else to maintain and develop Windows 7. When Microsoft says they are no longer supporting it, you have to live with the consequences and either open yourself up to vulnerabilities, or move on to the new garbage.
Yeah Linux is harder to learn and you have to deal with hardly any major businesses making games or software for it. But you are completely free from terrible companies making terrible decisions just so they can make more money off of you.
This kind of thing is why I love Linux. I keep asking myself why it took me so many years to even find it. It feels like I've finally won a war I've been fighting for almost a decade.
Using windows is like using an abusive partner that sometimes does something that nobody else can and you need.
I always uninstall onedrive. It's very annoying not being about to browse to my file.
Microsoft is there for taking if another company wants to move and make an operating system that puts gamers first and stops forcing all this crap on people, that no one wants.
At work, we were hoping to skip 11 but that becomes less likely with every passing day.
Use Windows 10 instead, at work you don't have time to pork around and need stuff to work!
i have agreed to help upgrade all the PCs at my job to hardware that can run 11 properly... mainly because none of the old timers want to re-train on linux but also because windows 10 will be loosing security updates and none of them are savvy enough to avoid malware.
Me and a whole cohort of other devs have been critically forcing our company to adopt Linux native clients for developers. WSL simply doesn’t cut it for our use case.
When installing Win 11. Go into the BIOS/UEFI and disable WiFi and Ethernet there, before doing a clean install. So the OS cannot even see any NICs when installing. Make sure you have at least one of the drivers for the WiFi or Ethernet NIC downloaded, before doing this. Or you really will have zero Internet or Network conectivity after the OS install.
You are wrong. Microsoft has done many decades decisions that make user experience worse, to enrich themselves. They intentionally write code that was not compliant to standards, they intentionally make Windows configuration to complex and insecure because they want to give profits for their partners.
Turning point was Windows Vista launch failure. Windows Vista wasn't "bad", but that messed-up development process and design and their business model started to started to fall apart so they make decision to focus on cloud services. They release Windows 7 that was actually very similar to Windows Vista, they mostly refactor code base and fixing previous mistakes and they started to focus on making Windows more compliant with industry standards.
Windows 8 was the first Windows that was much more "solid" experience to users, it make possible to users maintain it more easily while software was running on Internet explorer or updated from Windows store and that is what they are done past 15 years. UI is also made more simple, removing "customizations".
Window 12 is released soon and likely control panel and all dialogs that look like 90s Windows are likely removed, but it is very much possible that Windows 13 Home versions are all locked to S-mode behaving like Windows 8 ARM tablets.
ive been having more and more people try Linux and oh man, they're loving it. especially the elderly! i install Ubuntu for whoever wants to make the switch and very few have had issues. of course ill walk them through how to do things and hide the powerful stuff in a folder, but all most users need is a web browser and printer compatibility. even with gaming, the few of my friends left on windows are gonna ride out win 10 till the bitter end. and when 10 is done they don't want to even bother with 11. im one of two power users in my groups, so that's not even a requirement anymore
Good old Windows 8 (not 8.1) and its glorious, touch-screen-centric UI. I bought a shiny new Dell XPS 8700 which came with Windows 8. I literally couldn't find the button they hid in the UI to turn the PC off. At the time, I was experienced with Windows XP, Windows Vista and Fedora Linux. Think about that.
Now-a-days, Windows is for gaming and Kubuntu is for most everything else.
I switched to linux on my Alienware lappy and apart from and couple of titles like Destiny and Dead Space (2023) it all works fine. I went with Ubuntu 2404 LTS.
Windows 11 is just absolutely awful. I don't know how anybody can actually like it. Microsoft are losing the plot. I'm staying with Windows 10, and I also use Linux Mint. Microsoft are doing a great job of promoting the switch to Linux. And I dread to think what Windows 12 will be like.
Well, there's still Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 21H2 which will continue to be supported until like...what? 2032? And since W11 Iot Enterprise LTSC 24H2 is coming soon, I doubt I will be annoyed by then. Just some debloating and tweaking is enough for a seamless experience. And if that version turned out horrible at launch? I'll stay with W10 until everything's done and dandy. I ain't switchin' to Linux until it worth my time and can serve my needs as perfectly as on Windows. Some people gotta realize that before suggesting Linux to anyone.
Switched to Linux Mint 22 in August. It's about the closest thing to windows 7 you can use now and with steam and lutris I've been able to run 95 percent of my games so far. I'm not junking perfectly good hardware just because Microsoft's spyware needs a certain chip to work

I started as somebody that had access to both Windows and macOS PCs. I was always more drawn to macOS because it was faster (all the Windows hardware that we had was terrible, could barely run Windows 7) and I had access to Apples free office suite which I really like because it was free and easier to use than Microsoft Office and as a student that was top priority. (I didn’t need PC gaming because we has a PS3). Later my family bought a MacBook Pro which came in clutch in the Corona time since the Windows Devices always had problems with crashing and the webcams nor working so after that experience I never touched windows again except the PCs in my school of course. After the corona time my school started allowing note taking digitally to replace paper folders and even offered rental iPads to use in class. And I kinda fell i love with using a touch screen and the apple pencil so I bought myself a 2018 iPad Pro to be able to install my own Apps and use stage manager and replaced my MacBook with this. Now I am a happy iPadOS user.

I don't play much that's super intensive or competitive multiplayer, but I have OSRS going on my primary monitor fine right now. The only real issues I have are occasional weirdness grabbing the mouse when using wine/proton under wayland, but gamescope solves that.
They don't need gamers or people who build their own PCs when they've got 99% of businesses purchasing annual licenses for all kinds of software on top of all their cloud services.
I believe the main reason for slimming down a lot of options and breaking old features is down to security, it removes the potential for exploits.

I'm in my 2nd month into linux. I have to admit that I partially force myself using it since some aspects (like office) are really better on windows but I've found the work around and see practically no reason to boot into my broken windows anymore.
Windows 11 is the crappiest Windows MS ever made (yes Vista and Windows ME included) but they don't care anymore, Windows is no longer their main business and source of profit: Azure and all live services are.
Windows still exists because it still has market dominance and can serve as a medium to all these services.
It'll never get better unfortunately, better prepare ourselves saying goodbye to Windows instead.
If you switch to Linux I wouldn't go Debian just because of the slow updates I would go with a Ubuntu based like Ubuntu or Mint or something more up to date like Fedora

Linux user here. I had started preparing for my migration off of Windows back in 2021 when I caught wind of the strict hardware requirements for Windows 11. My interest renewed a couple years later when I found out Microsoft was closing activation loopholes for Wnidows 10 licenses. I was surprised how easy the transition was. Personally, I would just recommend making a list of the critical software you need and decide whether you'll have a native port, alternative software, support via WINE, web app version, or install the software in a VM.

I won't use windows 11 ever. They bastardized the taskbar to not allow moving it to the side and letting me widen it to my choosing along with no way to show full paths in the taskbar. I live by this. Also the thin scroll bars are just horrendous. I will be on windows 10 for years to come even with security issues in the future. I have to have functionality in the OS that is being taken away daily.
I think it might be worth it to toy around with Linux in a VM in the meanwhile. Nothing much, just try out GNOME, KDE, Cinnamon and others just to see if you can get them to behave the way you want to behave. I personally can't stand Windows 11 behaviour after having made the perfect KDE setup for my workflow/usecase.

So, in other words if you move to 11 make sure you have no networking hardware physically connected to the system!
They ran me off of Windows last year. Been windows free for bout 15 months and do NOT regret it.. can still play the games I enjoy between my PC and console without the headache. I will continue to use their console but I will NEVER install their OS on my PC again for as long they are on this path. 95 was my first version of windows and 11 was my last
Been a full time Linux gamer for about 2 years now with no reason to go back to windows. Currently back on Linux mint after hopping around for awhile & as mint always is its super stable & for me works great for gaming. Ive done a good amount of changes to my mint install so it is far from stock mint but its way more then I could ever do with windows. The biggest change for gaming is knowing some games wont work so you find alternatives like csgo instead of valorant or xdefiant over cod which to me is fine cause my main games work but if your a single player gamer like baldures gate or wukong then your 100% fine with those.
I have a Linux gaming PC and so far it has been almost completely pain free. Every game so far has run flawlessly with the exception of MGS3, which ran, but had some weird sound issues. I agree with you, I lost trust in Microsoft a long time ago. I will stop browsing the internet before I use edge, and only begrudgingly use windows 10. If forced to upgrade to 11 I will finally wave Microsoft goodbye.
Since 2022, I've been primarily using Linux (specifically, Sparky Linux based on Debian 12) because of the system requirements for Windows 11 and privacy concerns related to both Windows 11 and Windows 10. As I don't play many AAA games, I'm not familiar with gaming experiences on those platforms. I mostly play indie games, and they perform well on Linux through Wine and Bottles. Overall, I've been enjoying my experience, having dual booted with Windows from 2014 and now using Linux full time
I switched to Linux around 4 years ago because of all the Microsoft stuff then. Its only got worse since. I always wanted to switch to Linux but Im a Gamer. Since the launch of the Steam Deck Gaming has only got better and better on Linux on an almost monthly basis. And yes there are some Games that you cant play on Linux the latest one being GTA5 online. (offline works fine) but its a small price to pay for actually owning and having control over your own PC.
Direct x api calls are able to be translated to vulkan using dxvk on Linux, so directx applications can run on Linux now. It does add some latency but I think it caches things like shaders so it gets faster over time.

The problem is Windows is no longer a product, it's a platform for other services. That's why it's either given away for free or next to nothing - unless you are one of those rare people who buy retail copies, but who does that?
There is already a cloud version of Windows now, so I fully expect Microsoft to keep pushing until eventually your PC is effectively a "dumb terminal" again.
It always was a platform. It used to be a platrorm for computer owners to run software, now it's a platform for Microsoft to harvest computer accessors.
@@0LoneTech This is an important distinction, though, because when it was a product on its own and development was primarily funded by user's buying licenses, Microsoft actually cared what its users wanted.
Now that it's largely being funded by advertisers and Microsoft's own subscription services, they have less incentive to care as long as it doesn't hurt adoption of their real cash cows.
Also, and I say this as someone who runs Linux, it's not a replacement for a lot of people. Sure, if you just need light office work or play casual games, you might be okay. Once you stray into serious professional work or AAA games that require anti-cheats, it doesn't - and Microsoft is well aware of this.

There are corner cases where we might have a use for a VirtualBox with Windows to access some tools, but often it's just people yelling "I can't find anything" once they're informed the system isn't Windows, despite Windows swapping things around on the regular. The brand simply isn't providing a consistent experience. As for AAA games, those have gone the same route; why should I pay for someone to install a rootkit and another advertisint platform? I'd rather play games that focus on fun.

I use a variety of operating systems daily - MacOS, Linux, and Windows. Primarily Windows because I'm an engineer and my tools only run in Windows, but I actually kind of prefer MacOS TBH.
However, I was also a lab operator in college, and I can tell you that the vast majority of users will get confused if you so much as move an icon on their desktop, never mind present them with an entirely different file manager and launcher environment.
Let's just say that it was maliciously clever of Microsoft to move My Documents to One Drive automatically, because the vast majority of users will never notice until or unless they hit their quota limits.
I get the "Move to Linux" sentiment, and sure, it's technically possible for a lot of users, but it's not the slam dunk most Linux enthusiasts think it is. Simply getting Linux installed is beyond the capacity for a large number of users. Then, when they need help... God help the techie family member that has to support them.
Ironically, it will be services like Google Docs that finally kill Windows. Ironic because then everything a user has will be in the cloud, and their PC will be a dumb terminal where the host OS doesn't matter.
With openshell start menu and an optional retrobar enabled to make the system resemble xp or 7 I don't have many problems with 11. I have never set up a Microsoft account as it was installed with rufus, and with every notification off I have never seen any ms advertising. The annoying way Edge is default for many file types, is nothing new that internet explorer and some other applications didn't do already. Ever since xp or perhaps even before that, I remember mp3 files would always revert back to starting up WMP over time when played after an update, even though I was using foobar or something else, which was even more annoying.
Windows 11 is nothing but an update for 10 with a number attached in order to sell it, with some of the fewest changes ever experienced. The best thing about 11 is probably the revamped settings menu. The start menu is the main thing they focus on to market it to you as a new system each time, but that's easily changed if you dislike it. Other than that you'll likely need higher specs for the same performance of prior operating systems over time as more updates come through that bloat the system out, but that's nothing new.
The bloat started with 8 and it's metro gui and store, increased spyware with 10 with what some believe are poorly laid out options that don't combat it all. Many people who said they'd never use windows again have said this with almost every version of windows, although if your system is getting on a bit and a few yrs old, it might perform better if you backup everything important somewhere else (at least two copies of documents in more than one place on a different device) and now try a more cut down OS such as a version of linux to run your games and applications. If you can get anything working, then that's a bonus, although there are plenty of operating systems to choose from on distrowatch.
I left Windows on the day Windows 11 was released. Took the time between it's initial introduction and release to work out the bugs to get Linux running on my hardware. My computer is mine, I don't need my data farmed by Microsoft's servers, I don't need it held hostage by Microsoft servers because the corporation goes under or doesn't like something I do. I do miss Windows but Microsoft doesn't make it anymore. It makes an appliance for their cloud services and eventually will monetize the OS even more then it is with 11.
I know I'm going to sound like one of "those" guys, but if you want control over your machine, install Linux. The thing is, I'm not one of "those" guys at all. This is a real Nixon going to China moment. I *worked* at Microsoft for *20* years! I *loved* Windows up through 7. But the company and the product are *unrcognizable* to me now. The final straw for me: I had ten systems running Windows 10 just fine. Even though they'll also easily run Windows 11, only *one* of them is officially supported. I'm not going to spend the tens of thousands of dollars it would take to replace these machines at the behest of my former employer. It reminds me of that line from Wayne's World: "Microsoft... are you mental? We broke up!" I'm done doing what Microsoft tells me to do. I've had it.
DirectX will work on Linux in the long run though, that has been under development for years already under the Mesa project. DirectX itself is supposively cross platform but in reality many games would be using Windows specific calls all over. But at least DirectX on Linux is possible.
My birthday is next week, the present I want is Linux to get to 5% by December, Windows has become a horrible experience for everyone in my house and they are starting to consider the possibility of using Linux on their next devices (framework probably), if you want a better experiance when using your devices please consider Linux as your next os and Framework as your next hardware provider, we can build a better future today if we switch to open hardware and software!
The reason why Linux isn't very well supported is because we are small but the more pissed off people who switch to Linux the bigger we become and with that comes companies needing to keep up with us and not the other way around, Linux is fantastic because we don't have to bow down to our corporate overlords in a dystopian world, we have the power of community and no one can stop us so become unstoppable digitally by using Linux!

When I can get a Windows 7 and a Windows XP virtual machine up and running, in Linux, AND with full Direct X and 3D acceleration, THEN I will be ready to leave Windows 10 behind. The two virtual machines will be for certain software and games that I know will run on those old Windows OSes, everything else will be done natively in Linux. I tried Steam's proton thing with a couple of windows games and that actually worked pretty well. There was just one game that didn't work but I think that was more user stupidity than anything else. If I could just get VMware to actually RUN instead of giving me errors about some kernal module update, the sky's the limit!
I gave up on Windows since 8.0. My daily driver is Linux Mint 22 with Windows 10 pro as a virtual machine and dual boot when any windows program does not work on Wine of Valve's Proton. The majority of the programs I use are Linux native apps. I don't care anything Adobe because they are scam artists and MS Office 360 is subscription joke. Libreoffice along with GIMP, Inkscape, Blender. and DaVinci Resolve work well for my needs.
Windows update can deleted your discreye GPU driver that you installed from GeForce or AMD and force a 2023 11 month old driver on your system calling it the latest drivers windows 11 is such good making you switch to alternatives

Try it first on a virtual machine, understand how it works, make sure you start using open source alternatives to your daily applications... and then move...

@@Zeptic1 Who cares, every company can change the TOS after purchase when ever they want, then I can too. They stopped my licence after a new SSD installed, good job they did, as LTSC is much better, and less affected by bad updates. Still missing the debloated 7. That was peak win for me. Everything is illegal. Big tech selling your data, teaching AI on your stuff, inside trading, rigged elections, more money = less responsibility. Government lies, selling drug to their own people, and this is a never ending list... So back to Win, I will use the version best suits me. This is 10 LTSC at the moment. If they can stop being a dck, and provide a lightweight, debloated, simple, fast W11 or 12, barebone basic version, offline acc, no spy ware, no messed up updates... Then I would pay again. But as long as they messing with customers / users, and not providing what they want, I will choose the best I can.

I've been running a nice 5800X system for a little while now and really wonder if I should just go back to Windows 10. Windows 7 was cool, Win10 was... all right, but Windows 11 seems to slow everything down--especially SSD file transfers. Transfers are really slow. It blows.
W11 does encryption for security, that eats performance, enables CI by default and that eats performance, and the amounts of telemetery working through both of those, using the video card, eats performance. I am surprised that it runs half as good as it does most of the time.

That's actually not true for Windows 11. If you install Windows 11 on a Laptop and it detects a NIC port or Wifi card, you cannot bypass onlice account creation - even if the LAN/WIfi is not connected. You have resort to terminal trickery. Open cmd line (Shift+F10) and enterig OOBE\bypassnro. Otherwise the option to create an offline account is not available!

When at the desktop, go to Settings > Accounts > Other Users [...] Add Other > don't have sign in info > Add user without MS Account > ??? > Confirm

Windows is flaky and unreliable that apparently gaming performance is RNG now. With different installs of W11 having different gaming performance for no perceivable reason
All a bit clickbaity - but of course they shouldn’t shove full size ads in our faces anymore… If Apple does these things they are being applauded for their seamless ecosystem… also - windows is mostly free these days due to the legacy upgrades - so the money has to come from somewhere
I was able to use Linux full-time for a good 3 weeks before I ended up putting Windows 10 Pro on my new build's nvme. I have CachyOS on my Acer Nitro 5 laptop, OpenSUSE Tumbleweed on a SATA SSD that I'm putting into the build, and a Debian install on my old HP 8200 Elite SFF's HDD that I haven't touched in a while and I may not keep around. I've been a Linux enthusiast and have used it on and off since 2015. I prefer Linux overall and it can play most games these days barring really egregious anti-cheat and the occasional finicky WINE or Proton game. I've also been using GeForce Now Ultimate for games like Fortnite which can be hit or miss depending on your internet connection but playing on bare metal or on my PS5 is a better experience. I've used Windows 11 for 2 years on my laptop but I think I'm about ready to purge it and stick to Windows 10 for its final year and Linux.
