I have this kit - came last week. As you say Phil, there are no locating pins/sockets, but there are attempts at location points for some of the other parts, one of which are numbered on the sprue but on the printed instructions.
The instructions - which are of the exploded assembly - can be vague and I've noted a couple of errors already, notably the main gear wheel well walls: Sword have got the numbers the wrong way round, so the instructions will need very careful studying. I can see the propeller and engine bay parts being a nightmare. That said, the limited amount of parts I've glued together do fit quite well.
The parts are flashy around the edges but nothing a moderately experienced modeller can't cope with.

Thanks for that Phil. I wonder if the Airfix folded wings would work with this kit? There will be some 'fettling' but a possibility 🤔

I'm no expert, but even putting the dimensional inaccuracies from kit to kit to one side, the AS Gannet was substantially different to the AEW3 and I'm pretty sure that included differences in the wings too. But as many, including me, say, it's your model, your rules.

thanks for the review, i was wondering about this kit because i already keep airfix 1/48 version on my storage so should i get this one too or not. according to your review sword kit looks bit subpar than airfix one. i think i should wait until there gonna be aftermarket conversion kit can be applied with airfix version or airfix make AEW veresion themself :)

Dont go mad on the weathering ... I worked on deck Ark Royal R09 ... all the aircraft were very very clean & even the paint work (The odd chip) was were put right when the aircraft were in the hangars ... RAF aircraft to my mind are really filthy ... RN aircraft have to be washed all over several times a week to get rid of the salt after washing sometimes if time allowed they were polished all over.
This is the one Airfix should have done ... but hey ho ... a COD is still nice

I think I need to get this just to try cross kitting it with my Airfix one to have the folding wings. Will have to do a bit of research first to make sure the wings were the same...otherwise - wow!

Wings were different on the AEW version so you won’t be able to cross kit.

Built this in 1/72. It looks like the same tooling just scaled up.

I built Sword's 1/72 version of this kit. That's exactly what I did. I packed it full of BBs.

For £60 why would you bother, unless you were desperate for a AEW version.

But then those buying it, arguably, are desperate for the AEW version. I'm not desperate for it myself but I've bought one. I'm with Phil: I'm not knocking the AS version, but I wish Airfix had done the AEW3 instead of the AS.
