It would be interesting to see the minting process in action on these. I have not seen the same on AGEs either. I assume it is something proprietary with the 24k as you suggest. I visualize machinery cutting, punching, stamping and conveyoring these things at a rapid pace and going into a bin somewhere to then be separated out and packaged bulk into armored vehicles, or just the USPS truck, or carrier pigeon. Perth Mint to U.S. Mint - "Time to step up your game!" The uneven rim on the UHR coin would make me a little bi-polar. Which pole? Well, you can guess. Glad you didn't draw blood getting that buffalo out of the cage. Good for you for understanding modern bullion as just that - bullion.
I'd like to see it as well - I've seen parts of the process, but not the actual strike. The striking press either comes down in a radial arc or the die is on some kind of pivot joint. A straight hydraulic press wouldn't allow this. I blame robots. 😄
I'll be buying a gold Buffalo in the next few months... this video convinced me to get that first strike... just so I can lessen the likelihood of an uneven rim. My OCD couldn't handle that imperfection. Thanks!
A little 1000 grit will buff that funky edge right out 😉 I just looked at my one and only and yup uneven rim. A quick google search shows people asking about it since atleast 2008 so I would imagine your reasoning is spot on otherwise the US mint probably would have fixed it…. Or maybe that is wishful thinking…
I think the finish helps hide those minor defects. Wouldn’t pay the extra for the mint direct. Honestly with Buffalos, I pick up random dates for the best price. I know you’ve spoke on that, but I don’t mind. As long as it doesn’t look like a cull.
Bought some very expensive buffaloes from APMEX a few years ago supposedly in BU condition. Two of them had a severe deep cut into the edge of the coin as if someone used a hacksaw on them. They of course accepted my return and replaced them but what if they had said I did it? Yikes! I never buy 24k coins online anymore unless I personally know the dealer. Love the channel :)
All of my Buffalos have that same thickness irregularity...in my opinion, that's pretty lame coming from a huge national mint in this day and age. Having said that, I still love them🥰🐃

I honestly love the gold in any condition. I went gold panning recently. Got a couple flakes. and to see that raw gold. The radiance, the shine, the purity. It was beautiful.
The US mint has been wrought with quality control issues for years. Not just on bullion. The Perth mint seems to have exceptional quality. The US mint has a laughable new security feature. I have since given up on the US mint. Another great video though. 👍
Great video, and interesting comparison. Do you make recommendations on safe and secure reputable dealers for gold buffalos? If so, please share. Thanks!
Awesome collection...and the coins are always sweet too but this is the first time I noticed some boss books you got there. I feel like one was there just for me,but that's just my own lil delusions lol!
Why do you think the "Mint Direct" APMEX tubes would provide better coins than the monster boxes of other dealers? They are not selected coins. The Mint Direct really only provides an assurance that the coins are not the non-slabbed returns from a normal dealer mass-grading submission. And, the U.S.Mint has put out notices that with their inventory control system even they cannot determine which coins are "first strikes"... pure money grubbing by the TPGs.
The QA process is more extensive at the start of the run, and the first strike means they’re within 30 days of that start. No particular guarantees beyond that, but any dealer that understands marketing would never package random quality coins as premium. Cheers!
It seems the mint has had this problem for awhile, saw another video and cannot believe how many other bullion coins pennies dime etc..., have issues. I have been stacking GB's for the last 3 years, do you have any earlier buffalos with the finning problem. Just curious if this always was the way.
I have the 2010 in the video with issues, a 2013 with finning and a 2016 with finning. It seems like 2021 was the worst in my extremely small sample population. Cheers!
I wouldn’t give APMEX to much props. Last night 26 Jan 22, they released the st helena cobra. The bullion was 36 change and the proof was 300. Today 27 Jan after the silver market went down 3% the price for both was 37 change and 350. Silver sharks.
The Perth Mint is top notch for quality. I haven't looked at my bullion closely enough to notice any imperfections (I do inspect the proof/high relief) but it's certainly possible for small scratches to be there since they are usually not in capsules when I receive them. Which dealer is the one with poor quality control?
@@2is1gold Yeah, I got a scratched up 2019 Gold Liberty from them, and I returned/exchanged it for a better quality one. I'm glad they accommodated 👍 and had the inventory to replace it. Otherwise, I am sure they would have considered the imperfections as acceptable for bullion.
Any problems that come from the US Mint does not surprise me at all. Their quality control sucks, and they prove that over, and over again. Living in the States kinda forces us to buy their products (Eagles that is), but I learned extremely quickly not to get drawn in to the premium crap they sell, that probably 50% of the time has some kind of a problem. Thank you, but no thank you. I will of course continue to purchase the Gold Eagles for now, but holding off on the over-premiumed Silver versions.
Was worth doing it for the video, otherwise first strikes are not worth the extra premium, at least for me. You could see the lean on your Buffalo tower, not good enough for a coin as prestigious as that. All said and done, the Buffalo has the edge on the Eagle. Great vid, thanks.
I have noticed some significant flaws on my silver buffalos. I am interested in the gold buffalos, however. Does anyone know how they compare in terms of quality?
The Buffalo does toy with your emotions though. On one hand it's like WTF US Mint?! & on the other the quirks can be overlooked because it is just that good. Perth has their quality game on point.
I'm a fan of slabbed UK bullion, but its extremely hard to find examples without faults or scratches from especially bullion dealers but also the royal mint
Selling gold is annoying though because many times you can only sell one or small amounts at a time at an LCS. Not only that, but they only offer less than spot.
I think eagles and krugerrand are the same material? The are protected for scratches by adding a little bit of copper I thought. Nice video again amigo 😎
@@2is1gold ah oké Nice. Unfortunately the eagle in Holland is €100 more then a maple leaf. Buffalo is like €70 more and almost never available. So when I can buy a coin it mostly will be the cheapest and later when I have more the spent I will buy for collection perhaps 👍🏻
I prefer buffalos over eagles myself. Most of mine are proofs in mint capsules but I do have 5 BU buffalos. I appreciate the rugged looks they kinda remind me of pre 33 gold coins. All 5 of my BU buffalos have the same issues but to me it gives them charter. Besides it's still gold. I'm not sure why the mint has a hard time making them compared to Canada. I've never owed or seen a gold Maple Leaf that wasn't perfect and they're 24k gold.

my totally amateur opinion... I'd agree... you'd have to think that the .999 vs .9999 most likely has an impact on AGE vs AGB quality... which is a shame. you'd think the USM could "figure it out"... but problems seem to be getting worse not any better...
You keep mentioning local shops with these great deals that don't exist for most people. All the local shops I've called charge huge premiums to sell and they buy like $70 under spot.
@@2is1gold it just seems to me, there is no point for local shops unless someone wants cash. Online charge lower for buying and give more for selling vs local.
I was hoping they would have fixed the rim on the 2022s, but just got my first 2022 and nope, rim is still messed up lol. Doesn’t bug me too much, I know buffalos are super liquid no matter what, which is why I like them (also they look incredible)
Only gold coins that I own are the Buffalos. Had to decide between the Eagle vs Buffalo - and the nonalloy coin won. All my Buffalos are encapsulated, so it doesn't really matter about the uneven strike. I do also own some 1 oz PAMP Suisse Lady Fortuna Veriscan Gold Bars (New w/ Assay) - but your channel doesn't "do" bars... BTW, the 5 oz Pamp Suisse Lady Fortuna Gold Bars in removable Veriscan cases are UNBELIEVABLE...
To sell as first strike you go by the date on the monster box and basically all that come out for the first couple months were made in month one. Its basically a marketing gimmick now. What you really want is a coin from very early in the dies you will see a difference in sharpness of the strike. The us mint is not doing quality control checks they should be doing and rejecting coins. First flaw I see unlike perth mint that makes there own blanks / Planchets the us mint buys them from Sunshine Mint in Las Vegas. Why give up any profit and quality control.
I recently bought 2 Gold Buffalo from my local LCS and had them both tested before I left and made purchase. Though there is one Buffalo that has a rough spot on the face of the native American by the edge. Can I get your opinion on it.

Are certain years exempt from rim finning or uneven edge? Is it seen more on buffalos from mint sheets or tubed?
I don't have anough to see any pattern.
The buffalo is fine but rugged coin, where the imperfections add character. Not sure any other coin can do that...
I think so too. The CMLs get a tiny scratch and it bugs me. Cheers!
Ha ! BS Would you buy a new Porsche with a dent in it and call it character?
A joke ?
Was worth doing it for the video, otherwise first strikes are not worth the extra premium, at least for me. You could see the lean on your Buffalo tower, not good enough for a coin as prestigious as that. All said and done, the Buffalo has the edge on the Eagle. Great vid, thanks.
Thanks!
My 2023 Buffalo is like yours. It's as if during pressing, the gold mushed up the side of the die
I like your channel. You really have great content. Continue making these videos
Thanks!
I have noticed some significant flaws on my silver buffalos. I am interested in the gold buffalos, however. Does anyone know how they compare in terms of quality?
The silver Buffalos don’t come from the US Mint so it’s hard to compare them. Gold Buffalos do have flaws, though.
Any conclusions regarding the gold Canadian Maples?
They're always great in my experience, but they're easy to scratch.
The Buffalo does toy with your emotions though. On one hand it's like WTF US Mint?! & on the other the quirks can be overlooked because it is just that good. Perth has their quality game on point.
Agreed!
@@2is1gold I think it's because it's an old nickel replica. Sort of iconic
Never underestimate the ability of the U.S. Mint to f**k things up.
Ha!
I got a gold Buffalo still in the mint rapper and when we cut the rapper open at the LCS, it had a small dent.
Some of mine came out of the plastic wrap they used to use too. Now have been dented, but plenty have minor issues. None have bugged me. Cheers!
I've thought about that First Strike, but never realized what it meant exactly. Thanks for the info 👍
Yessir!
It seems like the US mint has had several issues in the last few years.
I think so too, but I've seen this particular issue with Buffalos on every year I own.
I'm a fan of slabbed UK bullion, but its extremely hard to find examples without faults or scratches from especially bullion dealers but also the royal mint
Just bought one and its scratched :( Dunno where to buy MS69 or MS70
OMG... esp when u spent $1800-$2000 on one coin...
Seems like a price point that deserves some QA. 😄
Selling gold is annoying though because many times you can only sell one or small amounts at a time at an LCS. Not only that, but they only offer less than spot.
That doesn't sound good. I have a few local options that will buy Eagles or Buffalos in bulk any time.
Maybe it’s because they’re 99.9% gold so they’re softer vs the eagle which has some copper to harden and protect it a little
Yeah, for sure.
I like a bit of odd character too! They should go up in price just for that nice flaw!
😄
What online dealers do you trust to not get counterfeit coins. Is there a risk .
My Britannia is the same. Good description of the slight flaws.
I wondered if it's a wider thing. It reminds me of the milk spotting on their silver. Cheers!
I think eagles and krugerrand are the same material? The are protected for scratches by adding a little bit of copper I thought. Nice video again amigo 😎
Both are hardened and have 91.67% gold, but Eagles have some silver as well. Cheers!
Agreed. It’s not a huge issue, but it’s also something the Mint should have resolved a long time ago. Cheers!
I love your collection of books !
Thanks!
THIS is the video I needed!
Makes me feel good about busting those two BU First Strikes out of their packaging since they’re just BU and nothing more for my stack.
As always: I DO WHAT I WANT!!!
Exactly! YOU'RE NOT THE BOSS OF ME! It's just bullion. These just happen to be more perfect than most. Cheers!
I just bought my first Buffalo. Definitely flawed from the mint. Uneven rim.
No biggie. The buffalo's are for avoiding taxes on the sale of bullion when I buy my ocean front house in Mexico.
Nice!
what no maple or Libertad?
Awesome collection congratulations! What is that beautiful knife?
Very interesting. Thanks for pulling one out of the package and spending that extra $ for science!!!
Doing my part to further humanity!
ASMR level 1000 . Love the background. Very esthetically pleasing to the eye. My first Buffalo is on the way. I can’t wait !
Keep buying and promoting the Buffy Lows. I need the premiums to drop on AGEs.
They have been dropping. You should be happy! 😄
@@2is1gold I am. I just wish you guys pumping Buffy lows could have a bigger impact in the world. Let them premiums for Buffy lows rise and the premiums on the AGEs keep getting lower. I’m loving it. Suckers chasing 24k gold is awesome to watch.
@@thinkforyourself9311 happy to help!
Awesome comparison 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽⛽🔥🔥🔥💨
🤜🤛
Hi mate, Could you do a video on why Britannia doesn't make a ringing sound when struck? And clarify thank you
Thanks for the science experiment : ) First Strike designation does nothing for me. Ill have to pull my Buffalos out this weekend and take a closer look!
Don’t look too close! 😄
Love the channel my brother..🥇
Thanks!!
Un bel éventail de pièces. Les pièces d'une once valant plus de 2.000 euros, ce TH-camur a les moyens, et c'est très bien.
my totally amateur opinion... I'd agree... you'd have to think that the .999 vs .9999 most likely has an impact on AGE vs AGB quality... which is a shame. you'd think the USM could "figure it out"... but problems seem to be getting worse not any better...
Eagles are 91.67, so they're a considerably harder alloy. I think they're definitely the Mint's focus. Cheers!
You keep mentioning local shops with these great deals that don't exist for most people. All the local shops I've called charge huge premiums to sell and they buy like $70 under spot.
I wouldn't say any around here have great deals around here. They'll all buy for over spot right now, though.
There's no way they don't know about it. They just must not care. "Do you want the soup or not?!" 😄
Only gold coins that I own are the Buffalos.
Yeah, I like the new removable display cases. Cheers!
Maples have it all, my overall favorite!😊
Anyone else have Buffalo's in Mint sheets? That's how they used to come when I first started.
What vendor did you buy from? Where you said you stopped buying from. Just trying to avoid for my purchases.
I have a 2022 britannia and the rim is slightly uneaven.
Interesting. Maybe it's not isolated to the U.S. Mint.
I recently bought 2 Gold Buffalo from my local LCS and had them both tested before I left and made purchase. Though there is one Buffalo that has a rough spot on the face of the native American by the edge. Can I get your opinion on it.
Wow! I didn’t know the buffaloes were so uneven. Thanks for the info!
The Leaning Tower of Pisa -- erh, I mean Gold Buffalos !!! The Apmex Mint Direct encapsulations (slabs) are very nice, but would I pay an additional $15.00 for one designated as a ”First Strike” ? Of course not !!! 🙄 🤣😂🤣
What kind of person would? Oh. 😅
@@2is1gold People who fall for slick marketing, I would venture to say ! 🤔
