It makes me feel old that these guys had never seen one of these cars before. I took my Drivers Test in a 68 Type 3 in 1971. It was an automatic version, same colour as this one, and it stalled twice during the test but I still managed to pass. This build looks awesome and I really appreciate the body style being kept alive.

Very cool build. I enjoy these builds. Hard to find these days. Old compact cars made into V8 monsters. I built a few over the years. Building another one now. Ls powered 78 K30 Toyota. Much the same style of build as that. One thing I see is front track width is outside the fenders. Going be interesting to see how he over comes that. I narrowed the mustang II setup 4 inch to fit in the stock fenders. Keep the videos coming. Love the build.

This video just popped up on my feed. What is funny about this video is, for over 20 years I talked about putting a turbo charged engine in the front of a square back. But I never pulled the trigger on it.
Instead, I bought an N/A 2JZ engine, added a turbo to it. And put that into my 74 Datsun 260Z. 😎😎😎

My first car was a Type 3 fastback. I used to dream about doing this in high school! Instead of learning French I was doodling what I thought the chassis should look like so I could install a big block Chevy. Of course the only modification I could afford was headers and coil over shocks in the rear, which didn't help handling at all.

What the hell. This dude is insane and a master craftsman. Some advise. If you look at traditional VW square back race cars the front end usually flips up as one piece with fenders attached. So that might solve your clearance and access issues. It would flip forward. Then again those are fiberglass bodies. Also you could go higher in the rear for ride height since the rear tires are so huge. Since it’s a hot rod a rake look is cool. Also it would just be a body raise not the actual suspension.

Definitely a different type of build in terms of choice in platform for sure. You don't see these Variants really ever here in the states. That chassis came together FAST. That thing is gonna be rowdy with that built/ blown drivetrain all hard-mounted with all spherical heim joints/ such a short driveline. Awesome. So glad you kept it a manual, even though its a straight line car. Everything i drive has three pedals, regardless that a DCT type trans is obviously faster, the manual is so much more fun to drive, IMO. I agree totally on sectioning the body off around the A-pillar/ firewall area. It'll make your body removal for servicing/ passthroughs for your cage- shock tower almost necessary anyways once the blower, cooling package and all the accessories are bolted on. I would probably cut the body just below the cowl, that way everything from the firewall back can be totally removed. It'll make fitting up/ finish welding your cage extra simple. What bender are you going with?? Hopefully a decent mandrel type one. If you're doing chassis/ exhaust work, one of the best mandrel benders i have used here in the states is the Tube Shark. They're excellent TBH. This was over a decade ago, so there may be something more suitable up there, not sure. Thank you for sharing this, and ill be watching your cage build 👍😎

Hiya! Watch you fellas all day. Good understanding between experienced engineers. Remember these variants in Africa in the day. Talk about “sleeper”? Goodness me. Looking forward to the finished product. Thanks.

I had a squareback, but it wasn't called a Variant. I built a manifold to connect to the fuel injection intake and put a 2 bbl carb on it off a Chevy Vega, and that combined with headers, made it run rather well for a 1600 VW

Im an air-cooled VW freak and for the most part a ACVW purist. However, 😂, ive never been a fan of the type 3 and 4 wagons. Variants or Squarebacks. At least now the thing is back on the road and technically still a VW

Wow Rich, this is going to be one very light and fast 2 door Lil VW wagon!!! Looks like a very fun toy. Every time I look at the rear of the car it reminds me with the rear gills (vents) of a corvair such a cool detail! Keep up with all the great work you and the boys!

@@DEBOSSGARAGE I didn't even know that Squarebacks existed until the movie The Stoned Age came out. It became my goal to get one after seeing that movie. I almost had one, but I felt it was too much of a project to take on at the time. If I wouldn't have been so young at the time, I would have just bought it and stored it until I could get to it. Live and learn! Good luck on the project! I'd love to know how well a Squareback performs with that much power!

I've always loved the "outside the norm" types of cars and dreamed of building them into a sleeper hotrod.
I remember when I was a kid an uncle had one of these type3 variants in the fastback model and even at 8,9 or 10 dreaming about it with a small block V8 and wide tires on the back.
