One of my best childhood memories was a field trip in elementary school to a local bread bakery right down the street. Best smelling place to be in ever! There is NOTHING in the world like eating hot freshly made bread, pastries, donuts etc. taken right out of the oven or deep fryer! Thanks for bring back some pleasant memories and the education too, Kate! :-) We even got to visit a soda making and bottling plant that was next door to the bakery! We all got a fresh Nehi Grape or orange or a Tiger Red creme soda to drink too! It was neat that back when I was a kid that these places were located right in the neighborhood where we lived instead of at an industrial park outside of town!

One of my Mennonite friends wife bakes fresh bread from scratch all day long, one day a week for their family of 8, she then freezes it to be used for the upcoming week. She also makes Strawberry jam from fresh strawberries, and whenever I'm fortunate enough to eat with them, for dessert all that I ever want is her bread, with her strawberry jam. This place is absolutely on my to-do list next time I’m in Denver. After having tried many American grocery store breads, I’m just so appreciative of the fact that every town (small or big) in the Netherlands has its own bakery. Always fresh delicious bread. Great to see bakeries like this. It's more expensive than the mass produce stuffed but boy does it taste good and its so healthy, in moderation of course like everything else.

Great video ...I could almost smell the fresh baked goods through my computer !! As a supporter of local business (and young entrepreneurs such as yourself ), it's cool to see this new business just as it's getting going . I wish I was nearby to support it. I can see you too , Kate , becoming a big success at whatever form of agriculture ,you ultimately decide to pursue.
I've been baking my own bread for decades, both yeast bread and sourdough. It's always a hit at potluck suppers, but it doesn't compare with the items this young man produces. One time I experimented with baking bread in a barbecue at our lake cabin. I put a layer of fire brick on the rack, with the dough on top. It was a real treat to have fresh bread at the lake. When we had family gatherings I would make bannock stuffed with a bit of applesauce and cinnamon, and also some with peach slices. I piled a large tray high with these and made even more. It was hard keeping up, because they were so good. My mother used to bake bread in her wood stove. I would come home from school and have a wonderful treat. She always warned me not to eat too much or I would get a stomach ache. It was only years later that I realized she probably said that to protect her bread from disappearing into the mouth of a hungry teenager. My most interesting creation was for a Robert Burns dinner with friends. I made a round loaf, and cut a doorway like the ones seen for mouse holes in cartoons. Above the mouse hole, I placed a tiny flag pole with a Scottish flag on top of the mouse house, and in front of the house I placed a small scroll printed with Robert Burns' "Ode to a Mouse". Writing this makes me wish I had a nice slice right now of that sourdough bread in the video.

I've been baking my own bread for decades, both yeast bread and sourdough. It's always a hit at potluck suppers, but it doesn't compare with the items this young man produces. One time I experimented with baking bread in a barbecue at our lake cabin. I put a layer of fire brick on the rack, with the dough on top. It was a real treat to have fresh bread at the lake. When we had family gatherings I would make bannock stuffed with a bit of applesauce and cinnamon, and also some with peach slices. I piled a large tray high with these and made even more. It was hard keeping up, because they were so good. My mother used to bake bread in her wood stove. I would come home from school and have a wonderful treat. She always warned me not to eat too much or I would get a stomach ache. It was only years later that I realized she probably said that to protect her bread from disappearing into the mouth of a hungry teenager. My most interesting creation was for a Robert Burns dinner with friends. I made a round loaf, and cut a doorway like the ones seen for mouse holes in cartoons. Above the mouse hole, I placed a tiny flag pole with a Scottish flag on top of the mouse house, and in front of the house I placed a small scroll printed with Robert Burns' "Ode to a Mouse". Writing this makes me wish I had a nice slice right now of that sourdough bread in the video.
