    Taiwan, as you said "a hidden gem" I had 28 days holiday over Christmas and new year in 2015/2016 in Taiwan, started in Taipei, train down to Kaohsiung, train up to Hualien, then on up to Keellung and back to Taipei, it was the nicest and most friendly place I have ever been to, the people are so helpful, and very friendly every where I went, your are made to feel welcome everywhere, in my mid 70s I have been to a few countries in my life, but Taiwan is the top of my list, I wished I had stayed for 3 months, an absolutely Wonderfull place with fantastic happy memories, travelled from the UK by myself but had a Wonderfull tour guide for the month, I thank you for posting this video it has a lot of information and its very accurate,

    Just a tip if it hasn't been covered, don't buy MRT tickets individually. Buy an Easy Card and load some money on it (I do it in 1000TWD increments). Then you don't have to get a ticket every time, and you can also use the card in various places like Family Mart, 7-11, etc as well as on the bus system and to rent U-Bikes to enjoy a ride around Taipei.

    These travel tips are great and right on point. I wish I could say that the weather you experienced was atypical, but it's really not - the summer is seriously hot all the time and always way above 30 degrees (I don't know where they get that number from sometimes, it seems like they often forecast 30 degrees but then the actual max temp is higher every time. BUT... some people love it. My mum was one of those, and says she'd never visit in the winter - go figure!

    Extra advice :
    - Buy a Easycard at a MRT station so you don't have to buy MRT tokens every time and you can use it in convenience store and to take the train for exemple. Topup at MRT stations and convenience stores
    - If you don't go to Taipei Main Station from the airport, you can take a bus, it is cheaper and well documented on Google Maps.
    - At the airport, ask at the information desk to have a iTaiwan account created. It gives you a free Wifi access in MRT, public monuments and many places in Taiwan.

    Tip: When using the MRT trains, just buy an Easycard from the booth in every subway station. it's sooo much easier! don't bother messing around with tokens and tickets. You will however still need to buy a ticket when using the high speed rail (HSR)

    • @EileenAldis
      @EileenAldis  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like that they have different options!

  • @onenineteen119
    @onenineteen119 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    - When you're at the airport, exchange your money there for NTD. They actually have some of the fairer exchange rates.
    - Get a SIM card while at the airport. It's much easier than getting a SIM card at a cell phone store (the process involves a lot of paperwork)
    - Use Google Maps to get around. They include the train and bus schedules which helps a ton.
    - Get that EasyCard and load it up at one of the machines. You can then not only use it to get on the MRT (and local trains!), you can pay for your purchases at 7/11 and Family Mart (no more coins for you!)
    - Taiwan food shops seem to shutdown between breakfast and lunch, so don't sleep in.
    - While the temp is better late/early in the year, bring some rain gear (or buy some from a scooter shop).
    I mainly go to Taiwan to ride around the country on a scooter (7+ day trips around the island), so if anyone is planning on doing that, feel free to ask me for those tips.

    The reloadable East Card is definitely the way to go. No need to waste time getting tokens each time on the MRT. If you have any unused credits when you're about to leave, you can also use it to buy snacks and drinks at convenience stores.

    I have been thinking about going back to visit lately and here you are with this wonderful video which prompted me to make a flight reservation for January of next year. Summer is always hot and humid there and I really hate the sticky feeling. It had been 10 years since I last visited; I can imaging things have changed a lot over there. I miss Taiwan so much. By the way, I love your video, love your demeanor, your sunny disposition and your clear and calm voice. I think you make a good tour-guide. Thank you for introducing this little piece of gem to the world.
