  • Since the Tamiya DT-02 MS project ended in a crash after a couple of minutes on the maiden run, I'm still in need of a proper test run. At the same time I got my Tamiya DT-02 Desert Gator up and running again, basically with all the left overs of a previous LRP S10 Twister Buggy I had laying around: electronics and oil filled dampers.

    As I started this Tamiya DT-02 re-build and tuning project with a comparison of the Tamiya Desert Gator XB and the Tamiya Sand Viper MS edition, I also think this is a good way to end it. So what did I gain in the final end, compared to my old and trust worthy runner, the Desert Gator?
    Obviously the project and proces in itself was the main goal. But at the same time I'm looking forward running my "new" Tamiya DT-02 MS Sand Viper this summer, off camera and maybe some more on camera.
    Admittedly, the angle of the camera and the shortness of these clips here are not enough to show the real differences. Especially as I had a limited space to run them on. But I asure you, they feel and behave very differently. The DT-02 MS has a lot more torque and top speed and feel better damped.
    Sadly it actually doesn't behave very well with the 10.5T brushless motor. The front of the buggy lifts from the ground when accelerating and in top speed, resulting in almost zero steering and zero control. Even when deaccelerating it suffers from an ridicolous large turn radius and an incredible amount of under steer. Over steer is fun, and should be the pride and glory of a 2WD, but under steer and loss of control is no fun at all. I have actually already run it off road a a large ball field, equipped with the stock off road tires, and the result was the same. Some added weight in the front would probably help, but the DT-02 is small and doesn't provide much room for some weight in the front. If you have any suggestions, please don't hesitate to suggest something.
    The Carson All Terrain Wheel Set still works sweet on tarmac. But they also still wears out very fast on tarmac. Please check out a previous Tamiya DT-02 Neo Fighter Buggy test of the same tires (with diffrent wheels) here:
    • Tamiya DT-03 Neo Fight...
    A short realistic run from this same day in 4K with no editing, music or slow motion coming up this tuesday.
    I must admit I am tempted to remove the electronics from the Tamiya DT-02 MS and replace it on my almost stock Tamiya DT-03, just too see what will happen. But before I do anything, I will run it some more and try to get some off road footage with the DT-02 MS with the brushless set up this season. Stay tuned.
    Please check out the other videos of this series in my channel, for more information and full specifications of the Tamiya DT-02 MS Sand Viper. And ... yes ... many other Tamiya RC models in my channel!

      Yeah, cheap wheels/tires for a cheap buggy is a good thing. Too bad they wear out quickly on tarmac. They got a pretty solid grip.

    Awesome videos, i've watched a lot of them about DT-02s and DT-03s, as i have 3 kits as well, you inspired me to play again with them!
    - for the rear arms, i installed DF-03 arms and rear hubs, the arms are longer and help with the understeer a little
    - i'm trying to mod the spur gear so i can fit different size pinnions and spur gears like a buggy racer

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks and thanks for watching, Michael! Nice to hear I rekindled your interest in your DT's. Sounds very smart with the DF-03 arms. Didn't know they fit. I guess one also needs longer axles then. Different spur gears would certainly help the flexibility of the gearing. I only have the stock 19T and 17T pinion to choose from. Very difficult to fix now that the spur gear and counter gear comes in one piece. Hope you succeed in the mod! Sounds great.

    • @Cadman_24
      @Cadman_24 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The axles are exactly the same, i got CVDs, and they were the same part number for both DF03 and DT02/03!

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds strange if the suspension arms on the DF-03 are longer. Maybe something to do with the rear hubs?
      On the DT-02 I got the DF-02 Universal Shafts/CVDs.

    Id check over if the brushed esc can handle any faster motors then what it uses atm.
    & also check if you can lower the punch of the esc anything & also lower motor timing slightly should help with how it behaves under heavy acceleration.
    You can also add on aluminium parts i suppose in the front to get some weight in there.

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Marcus! The brushed Desert Gator doesn't need to go any faster (for my sake), but the LRP A.I. ESC can take motors down to 18T. Your suggestion about the aluminium parts in the front is great! DIdn't think of that one myself. Sadly I think it's easier to get aluminium parts for the DT-03 nowadays than the DT-02 and I think aluminium weighs a bit too little for what it needs. But you are right, all the weight it can get in the front will help. Thanks for your tips!

    Until TH-cam - I've never heard of Carson RC.... Matteo seems to like those tires too. I've checked high and low, but can't find any suppliers in the Colonies. 😣
    It's a bit funny that you talk about lack of control - with brushless motor and a 6S battery!!??? 😲 😲 😲 😲
    Must be a whole lot of fun though! I've never put even close to that kind of power in ANY of my Tamiya Buggies. I guess the gearbox is much stronger than I thought! 👍👍
    Nice video, as always!

      JA Murphy I don't know about Carson outside Europe, but it is actually owned by the same company that owns the Tamiya import rights in a good deal of the European territory. Carson makes their own stuff (models, Electronics etc.) but also make a lot accessories for Tamiya items plus Tamiya merchandise.

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JA Murphy He he, I have never even tried a 6S LiPo. I think it would burn the 60A standard Tamiya ESC immidiately :-) The LiPo is 2S, the NiMH is 6S ;-)

      That's interesting that Carson is involved with Tamiya! I guess it's just a European/UK thing.

    Hi, I'm just wondering if you could please give me your opinion on whether the df-03 aluminium shocks you have on the MS make a lot of difference over the CVA on general running about on grass and mixed surface ? thanks

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think they are better, definitely one of my favorite shock sets, but over all, if you're not racing these (as I am not) it doesn't make that big a difference. The CVA's are quite nice too.

    • @nicksinclair7838
      @nicksinclair7838 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NordicRC thanks for the reply , they look quality but I guess as an upgrade I'd need the softer springs for the front at least where as the MS ones have the correct springs for the dt-02 and it just starts getting too expensive to justify if I'm not racing it and it's not a massive improvement

    Hello, good video ! Yes put the brushless motor on DT03, i'm interesting in.
    After a crash, my Carson wheel is broken, i try to keep the tire, but it's difficult to remove the glue.

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe Begin Hello, Joe! Thanks and thanks for watching! Yeah, I'm pretty interested to see how it would behave compared to the DT-02. If the front stays down etc.

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe Begin Ahh you got them too? Yes, too bad when a wheel breaks with some good tires on. Maybe some time in the oven would loosen the tires? I havd seen many on youtube do it. Some does it with succes ... and some doesn't so I don't think it is a bullet proof system. Too bad, those tires fit perfect on the Tamiya stock DT wheels. Hope you save them.

    • @ptidom29fr
      @ptidom29fr 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, as i already told you, in my DT03 i change the ESC by a Hobbywing WP1060 and put a SuperStock BZ motor. It's very good. I need to retest, but the DT03 don't up the front.

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe Begin Yeah I remember. Plenty of power with the Super Stocks (and good looking motors too). Gonna try one out myself some time.

    • @ptidom29fr
      @ptidom29fr 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes good tires the Carson, but even if i keep the tire, i need to find a wheel. I don't think is a good idea because like your video, we can find wheel+tire cheaper.

    Oh no.. i saw a DT-02 Sand Viper around 100€. Should i? Is the chassis good,reliable? What's your thoughts on DT-02?

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a really fun little light entry-level chassis. Again, performance wise, it's outdated though. The DT-03 (one of Tamiyas cheapest kits) use the DT-02 suspension and gear box, but has a longer and more balanced chassis.

    • @GTMatukka
      @GTMatukka 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NordicRC But does it mean that DT-03 is better? DT-02 chassis looks nice. Great base for the Astute "look-a-like" :P

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, should be better balanced and stable. But I guess nothing that matters too much in terms of having fun 😀 Yeah, lot’s of beautiful DT-02 body options. My favorite is the Desert Gator and Sand Viper. Yes, like small Astute’s 🙂

    • @NordicRC

      Sounds strange. Never had big issues with mine, except for that one. But I think it was a matter of 0.3v too early or something like that so not a big issue.
