[Mario Kart Wii] Unrestricted Vehicle Combo: Project update! (2024-07-09)

  • I can confirm that the Unrestricted Vehicle Combo mod project is getting closer and closer to its first release!
    Sorry for the lack of any audio btw. No idea why there isn't any audio, recording got borked, moved to a new PC so I still need to tinker with it a little bit until it's fully operational.
    Plenty of characters are getting done, only very few characters still need to have their textures to be made, and to top it all off, we now have a code to actually load in the illegal combos without the use of holding down buttons; you can select them just like how you remember it in Mario Kart DS!
    Big shoutouts to squidward and Marioiscool246 for this big code update!
    Of course I'm not forgetting Gaberboo and Toadette Hack Fan for helping me out previous to make the combos load on the menu, and a bunch of other people who helped with making them functional, I'm terribly sorry if I'm forgetting people, but I do give proper credit once the first release is published. I'm overly excited as usual for this silly project to the point that any big progression that's being made makes me want to share it all... xD
    And last but not least, big shoutouts to the many community members who've been helping out with making new textures for all the vehicles. Without them, I don't think I would've kept going with this project. There were dips at times but we're getting there, slowly but surely! :D

    It includes a checklist on what needs to be done, as well as a cheatsheet for the characters' seat positionings and codes that are needed to make this functional. I will update the tabs and pages pretty often, it might be a mess at first glance but there's a pattern you can follow. I'll make it prettier eventually, don't worry :P

    The best Mario Kart Wii mod of 2024... It's revolutionary, bringing the dreams of many into reality. When it's released, I can see this blowing up; people making time trial records, having fun on Friend Rooms and more! Very worth hard work

      I'm 100% sure I'm fooling around with the craziest combos in friend rooms. 😂
      There will be different stats as options for modpack and distribution creators too if they want a more casual approach, like having all character bonuses nullified, Only Weight Matters, of course there will be the vanilla variant. We'll make sure to make it easy to understand on how to use it once the first release will be published :D

    Characters who originally cannot ride lighter or heavier vehicles maded them special colors for these vehicles. Neat!

      For this project I'm quite impatient myself, and I know it's going slow but it's getting closer and closer to be done!
      I had some dips myself where I was working on too many things at the same time, but now I'll try my best to stay focused so that we can have the first release published at least before autumn. There are still a few characters that need new textures which other people need to make, but having a base to work work would be great.
      Animations and the actual finishing touches come later. I think we all waited for this one to be released for too long 😅

    Wait ayo this is absolutely insane! Great job as always man, been following all your works since I was a teen and you never fail to impress :) I can only imagine how much editing and such this has taken so far to actually make work

      Surprisingly most of the models were actually really easy to set up, you basically get the character model, and the vehicle model you'd like to give them, and then rename the file. The most work is just the most tedious work, which is setting up all those combos. 😂
      I'm glad we have a team to create the new textures for all the "illegal combos", otherwise it took forever for me to get anywhere with this project... xD
      The hardest work had to be the coding though, so big shoutouts to squidward and Marioiscool246 in the Mario Kart Wii modding community to make the buttons work and make it compatible for pretty much all modes! 😄
      I'm glad many people like what they see so far, this mod will be massive once it gets its first release, very exciting indeed!

      Aside from the Korean version crashing in the 4-player mode menu, it is actually very close to get its first public release! I only need to wait for the textures people wanted to work on, I'll make sure to upload an announcement video once it is time. 😄

      i hope this mod will be played as much as CTGP revolution, or even be considered as an essential mod for the best way to play mario kart wii, since we're talking about a more polished and variated version of the original game

      @@AzureLikeSky The mod will act as a standalone mod for others to include into their own modpack. As for my own modpack goes, it's still a local modpack for just local friends and visitors, but we shall see if my thoughts and decision will change over time. 😋
      As for CTGP-R v1.03+ goes, while Bean did like the ideas of this, we have yet to see if he even puts news assets in that modpack, for example, my Time Trials results screen textures are still not being added to the assets despite he wanted it in, so I have no idea what to think about that modpack anymore... 😅
      One thing's sure, the Unrestricted Vehicle Combo mod will be available for everyone for at least their own modpack. It's confirmed to work with LE-CODE and Pulsar distributions, as well as without any extra distributions, works on both Riivolution as well as a custom build "iso", so it's surprisingly compatible with many other mods so far. 😄

    I love that with this, Baby Daisy + Flame Runner would be the meta, since she has a higher speed bonus than Funky Kong.

      While that's true, for Time Trials it might not change too much due to turning and drifting also play a very big factor for those extra micromovements. Of course for online play it'd be a no-brainer for many people to choose that combo, though, that's what competitive play does... xD
      I'm 100% sure it won't change too much in competitive play in general as the physics and selection need to be as vanilla as it needs to be though. But one thing's sure: once it gets implemented in a modpack or a specific distribution, then you'll see more variation, for sure. 😄

      @@aluigiFromKart Ah yeah, had to double-check on that, Daisy has handling and turning as extra bonus while Baby Daisy has weight bonus instead.

      Weight still can be used but it's so crucial, it might only become a thing in teams.
      You'll never know how the competitive scene will evolve if you give all the tools really... xD

    Hey there! This mod is just so cool and cannot wait to try it out! Also, on the CTWiiki, it says that the mod(no download link yet) has an issue where other players freeze(I am not sure if that is accurate). Hopefully it gets fixed! Once again, great stuff!

      @@brysoncordero8618 The Tockdom Wiki gives that warning since other people who don't have the mod will try to load something that doesn't exist, it's similar to Mii Outfit C. But once you have the mod then it works!

    i think that to fix the legs of big guys clipping through small karts, you could try to set a rig resize to make the legs fit with tiny vehicles

      I agree, although those kind of tweaks will take a lot more time. The first public release will have them dangle over or through the vehicles for its first release but for sure it needs to get updated for future releases.
      Similar to how Nintendo made their Standard vehicles, the illegal combos need the vehicles be slightly tweaked so that they can sit and fit better on their vehicles, and from there it's "simply" tweaking the characters' animations. All that will be probably hosted by someone else though, it's very difficult for people to keep working on a project as either life is in their way or just get unmotivated (or laziness kicks in). 😂
      Sadly 3D modelling isn't my strongest part of my creativity, one day I'll learn more about it, that's for sure.

      @@Wingcapman i think an easier way to fix it, is to resize the lightweight karts to make them fit with the big racers and just exclude the access to make the big guys ride small sized standard kart, since i presume the standard kart of all 3 sizes have the same stats

      @@AzureLikeSky Sadly it's not as simple as that, otherwise we would've done that by now.
      You see, the vehicles exists of multiple parts, for example the body frame, front tire(s) and back tire(s). All the tires their position are always in a fixed position of distance and depth, meaning that if you change them for - let's say, Honeycoupe/Dragonetti - you will change those for literally everyone who's using that vehicle, no matter the weight class. This is why simply resizing won't do justice.
      The Standard Kart vehicles and Standard Bike vehicles actually look slightly different too if you compare them side by side. And believe it or not, all those have different base stats too, where Standard Kart S (for example) is the slowest but has more acceleration, while Standard Kart L is the fastest but has worse acceleration (and surprisingly worse offroad stats too).
      Long story short, there is A LOT going on with how the game works, when it comes to those models. It's why it took so long to finally see someone working with them, maybe one day we'll get coders and programmers who rewrite the way how those work so that the community can modify them easier, who knows! 😄

    I have a question which isn't related to your video, but do you know if there is anyway I can just REMOVE ONLINE mode altogether. I'm making my own custom iso of the game and cant make a custom server for it. I simply want to make it local play only? If you don't know how to do that bit, would you happen to know how to remove the online button from the home screen? I don't expect you to know but if you do it will be a major help. Thank you!!

      Thanks! The menus are still in an experimental state though, and nothing is final as I experiment and document all menus whenever I look at what I can modify... So it's a bit of a never-ending side-project at this point. 😅

      The hitbox detection is insane in this game, almost a whole other small vehicle fits inbetween and the other character already gets bumped away. What a game. 🤪

    Nice looks like baby daisy on the bowser bike will now be the best combo since baby daisy has a speed stat of +5 compared to funky kong +4 guess it means the bowser bike got a tiny bit of a buff in this mod

      While that's true, sometimes the extra few frames of mini-turbo boosts and other certain stat bonuses do help for very specific courses, so not much will change. Of course people will try, but since we also have certain wheelie-related glitches, who knows what the future will bring us for competitive play. :P
      Good thing I don't care about competitive play for specifically this game, you always can create or recreate the meta, but in the end, people always go back to the original stats due to them being used to those physics and stats, or even due to safety when it comes to promoting modifications. I just create what is needed to expand this game.😅

      For online play, of course there will be players using this. For Time Trials however, it actually might surprise you! Some courses will definitely change meta, but there will be quite a bunch out there still sticking with their current top tier combinations.
