I genuinely hoped Mary would have ended up with Blake, he had charisma, his wits matched those of Mary and he was not afraid to speak up and be frank with her, they were truly equals, so sad the writers decided to abandon the character.

They had a great chemistry, but the interference of Tony in the process of them developing feelings for each other had dimmed the spark they had initially. I would have preferred if they at least had a long romance even they didn't end up together rather than the annoying Tony storyline, by the time she was done with him those two have started to become friends more.

As much as I liked Charles, Henry was the better choice. All of the men, except for Tony, challenged Mary and weren't afraid to put her in her place when needed. But Charles was the safe bet. He was initially critical of their livelihood only for us to find out that he was richer and more successful than all of them. It is very unlikely that Mary would have changed much after this. The Pigs were her challenge from Blake to assess her character, which she would have always done regardless of who challenged her because she has always had this capacity for hard work. By contrast, Henry goes against everything Mary and her family (and even Charles) stand for. Her entire character was predicated on finding a "sensible" match. She even initially refrained from accepting Matthew's proposal because she thought he may not be the heir. While Henry does come from a good family, he prefers following his own passion in racing where he doesn't necessarily make that much money. Not only is he able to challenge Mary and they both exchange blows on this account, his occupation strikes a cord in her because Matthew died in a crash. The terrible moment when Henry's friend dies brings forth all of these feelings that Mary has not had to address since Matthew's death. Both of them realize that they love each other. She realizes that she can't stand by and be a racer's wife, and he is willing to give up racing for her. When she is breaking down at Matthew's grave telling him that she loves another, that is more growth than she ever had with Blake. She was forced to face a painful truth and chose to go through it regardless because she loved him. But he is also forced to make changes, as his passion for racing is no longer present after losing his friend. The girl that made a huge deal over status and smart matches ends up marrying a car mechanic because she loves him. That's not to say that she didn't love Matthew, but she was still judgmental about things when she was with him and that Blake did not have the ability to humble in the same way. I always saw Blake as an entertaining foil to Mary, but he would not have facilitated the same growth within her. Henry Talbot has an charming confidence about him and unlike Blake, never once tries to pretend with Mary.

What about a spin-off that focuses on Lord Grantham during WWII? He gets addicted to prescription opioids and ends up with a series of escorts while Cora turns to prescription amphetamine and has delirious spells where she rants at the kitchen staff about the secret messages that they're arranging in the food, all while the doped up Robert is injecting heroin upstairs with two or three prostitutes lying around the room in a stupor. And then it turns out that Molesley is heavily into S&M with Baxter, and he puts a ball-gag in his mouth while she whips him in the attic bedroom. Carson dies. Thomas support Nazism and covertly sabotages British war efforts. Or just a spin-off about Mrs. Patmore's restaurant. Either one.

I wish she had married Blake, Mary is a stuck up, spoiled bully who could be very manipulating and mean. In my opinion she needed to be with a man who wasn’t afraid to talk back to her and humbled her instead of worshiping the ground she walked on and Blake was definitely like that. While Henry was also not afraid to speak his mind to Mary, you have to admit her and Blake had amazing chemistry and we didn’t even see her laugh like that with Matthew.

Does anyone remember a scene where one of Mary's suitors was very kind to Isobel, saying something along the lines that he realizes it must be hard for her to see Mary with another man (who isn't Matthew)? Was it Charles? Or Tony Gillingham? Or am I making that up and completely imagined a scene like that? :D

Nobody mentions the fact that they're going to see the pigs IN THEIR DINNER CLOTHES??? This would never happen. Ever see the Queen walking around the grounds at Balmoral? She's not wearing a crown.

They should have changed their clothes before their walk. They look so ridiculous in evening wear in a pigsty.

Maybe there was no time, as it was getting dark. Also, they probably thought they were going to just look at the pigs, and didn't anticipate having to work to save the pigs.

I'm in the Mary should have married Charles Blake camp. But also 100% support that he said no after seeing how she was playing all the other men and he had more respect for himself than to let her do that to him not to mention the whole she never considered him until she learns from Tony that Charles is the heir to an baronetcy part. But I think she was better matched with him than anyone else including Matthew. He was also the best looking.
