    In this video, we explain how to determine if a pair of lines is parallel, perpendicular or neither. Parallel lines have the same slope. Perpendicular lines have slopes whose product is (-1) negative one.

    To find out if it is perpendicular you just need to see if the fractions are similar....
    So for example -3/4 is perpendicular to 4/3
    To find the perpendicular line 'just turn the fraction around and change the signs'
    Hope it helps :) It actually saves a tonne of time in the exam.........

      If you solve for y and put it in slope-intercept form. From standard form, it won't quite work out that way.

  • @Greenemath
    @Greenemath  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For what you're probably looking at now, the answer is yes. Two perpendicular lines (with neither being vertical) will always have slopes such that the product is -1. Later on, you'll deal with the geometric definition of perpendicular, as it applies to having a horizontal line, and a vertical line. When you have two lines such as x = k and y = b, they will be perpendicular, but it takes the understanding of limits to show that the product of their slopes is -1.

      @Britney Lawson We started with 7y = -3x + 4.
      We are solving for y in order to put the equation in slope-intercept form: y = mx + b, since the coefficient of x is then the slope.
      7y / 7 = -3x / 7 + 4 / 7
      Basically we divided everything by 7 so that y could be by itself.
      y = (-3/7)x + 4/7
      So the 4 isn't eliminated, we are just dividing by 7 since we are doing that to everything. Hope this helps.

    3x + 7y = 4
    When you took -3x from both sides, why did the RHS (or 4) end up as: -3x + 4?
    Shouldn't it be: -1x?
    You didn't explain that part...

    • @Greenemath
      @Greenemath  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why would it be 1x? I have 4 on the right hand side. If I subtract away -3x, then I just have -3x + 4, or 4 - 3x. There's nothing over there to combine like terms with. The 4 is a constant, there is no x in that term.

    • @zahiruddin1951

    Okay so how do you know if the lines are neither?

    • @Greenemath
      @Greenemath  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you place both lines in slope intercept form (y = mx + b), you can quickly see if the slopes are the same. If they are not, you can multiply the slopes and see if the product is -1. If neither of those occur, then the lines are not parallel (since they don't have the same slope) and they are not perpendicular (product of the slopes is not -1).

      2:02 where the 3x becomes negative? Could you explain that?

    • @Greenemath
      @Greenemath  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Isabel-lg7nr Go back to 1:52 in the video. I am solving the equation for y, so that it can be placed in slope-intercept form: y = mx + b. So we need y to be isolated on one side of the equation.
      3x + 7y = 4
      How can we get y by itself?
      Subtract 3x away from each side
      3x - 3x + 7y = 4 - 3x
      Now 3x - 3x is 0 so it is canceled from the left-hand side:
      7y = -3x + 4
      Now you can solve for y by dividing both sides by 7:
      y = -3/7 x + 4/7
      So the slope of the line here is -3/7, given as the coefficient of x.

    Aren’t you supposed to solve the -3x/7? That’s what I saw on another video

    • @Greenemath
      @Greenemath  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What do you mean by solve? How do you solve -3x/7? What does that even mean? The purpose is to find the slope so you can determine if the lines are parallel, perpendicular or neither.

      @@Greenemath I’m sorry! I miss understood! I watched another video on this and that’s what the person did! On the example for my homework, it shows the same work that you displayed but simplified. The example was x+5y=2 and changed into 5y =-x+2 then divided by 5. One of my homework questions is 3x + 4y =-1. Do change it to the format of 4y=3x-1 ? Or keep it the way you did. When I solve it in the format you did I got the y=-3/4 x - 1/4

    • @Greenemath
      @Greenemath  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Isabel-lg7nr It would help to know what your homework question involves. You shouldn't have only one equation for the scenario of this video.
      If you are trying to figure out if the lines are parallel or perpendicular, then you need the slope of each line. Putting the line in slope-intercept form: y = mx + b gives you the slope as m, the coefficient of x. In your case, you solved for y and got: y= -3/4 x - 1/4, which tells you that the slope for that line is -3/4. You need another line for this topic so you can compare the slopes and see if they are the same (for parallel lines) or multiple the slopes to see if the produce is -1 (for perpendicular lines).

    • @Greenemath
      @Greenemath  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Isabel-lg7nr Just to point out at 2:11 of the video, we solved for y here by dividing both sides of the equation by 7. The idea is to "solve for y", which means y is isolated on one side by itself.

      @@Greenemath wow just wow. Can you believe that 8 years ago at the start of my high school days I was watching your videos for extra help on understanding algebra. Fast forward to today and I recently graduated with a bachelors in mechanical engineering. It's the small things that add up to make a difference. Your videos helped me pull through back then and I bet they will keep helping new students as well. Keep up the good work.
