WCU #52: Understanding the New 2021 Omega Seamaster 300

  • The 2021 Omega Seamaster 300 presents a very new face to a historically-unsuccessful model in Omega's collection. By dropping its ceramic bezel and adopting a more old-fashioned style, this new version gives a different attitude and feel to the collection whilst a model in Bronze-Gold offers a unique alternative to steel.

    This analysis deserves an award. I learned more about the Seamaster 300 in 20 minutes than I have in 20 visits to my Omega AD. That bronze gold version is now amazing to me.

    I went out to Bucherer in Covent Garden last weekend to buy a Tudor BB41 and came away with the Omega Seamaster 300. Fell in love with it the moment I saw it. I can see why it's not everyone's cup of tea, but to me it's a real thing of beauty.

      My first and only luxury watch so far. I adore it.
      I understand completely why it’s not a very traditional watch, with an established or pre-existing niche, but I fell in love with it the moment I saw it. When I visited the boutique to see options this was still the only watch that caught my attention and I walked out with it the same day.
      I love mine, and I plan for it to be my daily-driver for life. That may change, but I doubt it. It’s my ideal all-rounder watch, it will patina and look less “flashy” over time, and it’s a stunning, comfortable, classy, highly capable, durable daily wear option.

    Every great design starts as a whimsy with no precedent at some point in time. Likewise every tradition also has a starting point. I love that Omega are taking something like their original as a spiritual starting point but taking it in a direction that looks far better than the original yet still stays true to it’s roots. It looks holistic and cohesive and not a weird mosh mash of new and old. I applaud their efforts. Extremely well done Omega. I may just trade my Planet Ocean in for one.

    I have a seamaster 300 (2252.50) and preferred this as it has a vintage look avoiding the ghastly skeleton hands which I dislike..this new seamaster is bang on in my opinion the only thing I would change would be a continuation of the second hand after the lolly pop end (as in my 2252.50) having said that this great video has made up my mind to save for one..thanks😁👍

    The Seamaster 300 is a beautiful time piece. I really like it. I was considering the Tudor BB 58 Black or Blue ( if I can get it) but now, I think I want the Seamaster. The Seamaster is also a lot more expensive. I love that the bezel has lume on it.

  • @dr.emilschaffhausen4683
    @dr.emilschaffhausen4683 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I was heavily leaning towards getting a Tudor 58 as my next watch, but this sandwich dial with lumed bezel may push met towards the 300 instead, even though it's slightly larger in height and diameter.

  • @dstfno
    @dstfno 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The previous 300 had silver/grey numerals, not white.The only white thing on the watch was the seconds hand. The dial is also not just matte black but sandblasted which gives it a very fine grain texture.

  • @jameshoward9700
    @jameshoward9700 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great discussion of this intriguing new Omega. I think it's massively improved over its forbear - mainly the increased face proportion/lighter feeling bezel. I'm still very unsure over the 'vintage' lume, the 41mm (case? Bezel?) and the polished bracelet... However, the sandwich dial, aluminium/lumed bezel, cupcake crown and reduced dial wordage are all excellent. It goes without saying that these will be very high quality in the movement, bracelet and finish.

    As the difference between an OK looking person and one universally accepted as beautiful or handsome is often just the subtle adjustments of eyes and noses on the face , the new 300 is an example of that analogy in the world of design. Somehow this new version is greater than the sum of the parts of the previous ones , yet the differences are so subtle as to be hard to pin down. The net result is a beautiful watch , and in my opinion especially the black faced version on a brown leather band .

    Love your review!! Very Eloquent! If I can own only one watch, it'll probably be the BronzeGold!! The Black Seamaster 300 (2021) is absolutely Stunning, and Technically superior to most everything out there.(In my humble opinion). I like the silver ring between the Bezel insert and the dial. (It brings balance to the Force; Face) The bracelet taper is nice. I like the cream color of the Hour markers. I am seriously considering getting one to round out my Average Collection of Casio, Citizen, Timex, Invicta, and "Fashion Watches".

    I bought a Omega Seamaster 300 Watch Co. So.e years back because I've never warmed to the newer Seamaster with the separate crown for the helium escape valve. From a divers prospective, it's a poor design. Then , about 2 yrs ago I picked up the Specter. Really love that lollypop second hand. Then this year they finally make what I've been wishing for , for years . Can't wait until the get to my AD's. My name is already on the list . Great , informative video. Thanx

      You don't have a diver's perspective. You're not a long submergence commercial diver. If you're a snorkeler of SCUBA diver you don't use the He valve. Pretentious.

      @@stevek8829 No I'm not a commercial diver . I'm a military trained diver . But I know what I like and don't like . I don't like that extra crown stocking out . And according to what I've read , to implement the valve , you have to use the crown . One more thing for a diver to have to mess with , unlike the rolex design. Nothing pretentious about observation and having an opinion about a peice of gear . Get over yourself.

    To me the 2014 version: A modern looking watch with retro design elements.
    To me the 2021 version: A retro looking watch with modern dimensions.
    I like both. But due the ceramic rather than aluminium bezel on the steel version, straight rather than conical crown, and the more restrained use of brown lume, I prefer the 2014 version. But I am really intrigued by the idea of a bronze-gold watch as an "every day watch" and an alternative to steel.

    BEWARE, OMEGA PRODUCTION ERROR - All Speedmasters with cal.1861 or cal.1863 movement (manual wound) paired with 5th of a second markers on dial (seconds divided into 5 parts) or paired with 4th of a second markers, and all with cal.3220 movement (automatic) paired with 5th-second markers on dial, have INACCURATE READING of the chronograph hand due to NO FIT between dial-markers of fractions-of-a-second and the movement’s beat-frequency per second. Cal.1861/1863 beat at 6 vibrations per second (6VPS) and require a 3rd or 6th of a second per marker between the seconds; the cal.3220 beats at 8 VPS and require a half or a 4th or 8th of a second between the markers.
    This affects Speedmasters with reference no. 311.10.39.30; 311.33.42.30; 311.30.42.30.01; 3590.50; 3572.50 et cetera (if they have 5th of a second markers paired with a 6 BPS movement - cal.1861 or 1863); 311.30.42.30.03 (a 4th of a second per marker); and it affects Speedmasters with ref. no. 3510.50; 3510.12; 3520.50; 2598.80 etc. (if they have 5th of a second markers, i.e. each second divided into 5 fractions of a second, paired with a 6 beats per second movement - cal.3220 or 1151 etc.).
    Incidentally, those with ref. no. 311.32.40.30.01.005; 311.30.42.30.01.004; 311.33.40.30.02.001; percent 311.32.42.30.04.003; 522.30.42.30.04.001 (cal.1861); 311.30.42.30.99.002 (cal.1863); 3876.50.31 (cal.1866) that have a 1/3 of a second per marker (each second divided into 3 parts, i.e. 2 sub-markers between each marker of a full second), are correct.
    Even Tudor had the same production error/design flaw, on all their Valj.-based 28,800 BPH (8 BPS) movement equipped Heritage chronographs, having 4 dividers between each full second marker, making it a 5th of a second per marker, with a CHRONO-hand that jerks forward 6 times per second and always miss the first and the third quarter-second-marker). Only now do we see it corrected. And only now have we recently seen Omega NOT cheating in this regard, more than 50 years after they stopped making their 18,000 BPH (5 BPS) movement, cal.321. They even cheated NASA, in the 1960s, equipping the astronauts with a 6 jerks per second chronograph hand over a dial with only 5 fraction-of-a-second markers. How lame and criminal isn’t that ?
    Even their so-called 1957 reissue has a 21,600 BPH (6 BPS) movement paired with each second divided into 5 fractions on the dial. Right, a CURRENTLY ONGOING mass sale of factory error/design flaw equipped CRAP, useless for what it is marketed as, a precision instrument for accurate split second timing. Criminal.

      @@Profanity92 lol if you think anyone will EVER actually take this watch SCUBA diving. People in 2021 use a dive computer on their wrist. Therefore, overrated. What’s it used for in the desk diving world? Nothing, because if you ever do need it, in reality you have to ‘charge’ it with something like your phone flash light to even get it to work, because it’s been under your shirt sleeve all day.

    My first reaction was that Omega tries to replicate the Black Bay concept. And I have to say it works and I love it just as much as the Black Bays. I didn't like the previous ones because they were a reissue with some modern touches.
    If these are successfull I guess Omega will expand the collection similar to the Black Bay collection with GMTs, chronographs etc.

      Wth are you talking about? Rolex didn't invent Reissuing vintage watches. A lot of people liked the vintage sea master's so it's logical for Omega to release a new version of the classic sea master

    IMO Omega is trashing their brand. They're advertising everywhere, the Bond thing is just tacky, they're paying for favourable reviews, faux patinas, bad designs. Their prices are far too steep and are then frequently discounted, prices on the used market have been flat for years, you can buy a genuine vintage 300 for less that this new stuff that they're pumping out.
    I'm a big fan of their vintage stuff but couldn't see myself getting a modern one.
