I agree that it has become a marketing strategy to show the other perspective. As consumers or clients, we can never be sure about their opinions. That s why is marketing, saddly. The real people who shoul speak up are the one directly involved in this world. But we as byuers can also influence the way things go. Do we want to see just nice clothes or do we also what to see the real stories of the people behind them?

"Hes known to do that with girls" broke me. The fact agencies know that theyre putting girls at risk and arent bothered makes me ill. As someones whos been through bad experiences like this but with random guys, and then when i mentioned it to my friends they where like "yeah hes weird sometimes dont be alone with him" after everything already happened, i know how crushing it can feel knowing people really dont care about your saftey

It bothered me in the sense of, if they knew these types of things happen, why didn’t you say something beforehand? All it takes is to pull the person to the side and say hey, by the way this person is known for doing this and that so just make sure you’re never alone with them, and if you find yourself in an uncomfortable situation, try to get out of it. And then express that you’re someone they could come to. It’s so easy and only takes a couple of seconds
Agencies don't care about models. If they did, they wouldn't allow them to destroy their bodies with those unhealthy and destructive diets. They just want to make money. I once read that some models were left waiting for hours in the dark at a casting and, if I'm not wrong, some of them had physical problems for that. This is a shame. These girls and boys are human beings, not toys.

AND YET, Vogue - among many other publications - is often responsible for using younger and younger models and perpetuating dangerous situations with - for example - photographers who are known to sexually harass or assault these young women. So, for Vogue to be Cool in my mind, they would have to come out with a mission statement detailing how they are going to protect young women and prevent the culture of abuse & degradation. 8352731 I think you need to educate yourself before commenting because as of last year and due to the #MeToo movement, Vogue has made a statement reminding the protocols of how women should be treated during photoshoots to the point where they've made a rule that minors must always be accompanied by their guardian and no other staff outside those involved in the photoshoot is allowed to be in the rooms. Of course, say what you will about "oh that should've been enforced earlier" etc but let's be honest, it's still good change and at least progress has been made

I was thinking that too. In the era of "Me Too" I can get why they would want to put forth something like this but at the same time they're hiring the same people who are doing the things these women describe, it's not like they can suddenly claim themselves progressive when being hugely influential in perpetuating this abuse.
@@asmrm1572 A lot of women are born skinny and beautiful, yes. And I'm not about to shame those skinny girl because I know what it's like to be told I need to eat a cheeseburger.
But there are also a lot of women who abuse their bodies in order to meet the standards of the industry. And the industry is harsh. If you're even an inch over what they find ideal around the waist, they will tell you you look fat or you need to lose weight. In which case, that is no longer natural, it is torturing your body into doing something that isn't entirely natural for it.
Also, photoshop often contorts skinny girls to look even thinner than they already are and changes their legs and arms to look thinner. That's where the "unrealistic" part comes in. There is nothing realistic about those. I'm sure she wasn't calling the girls unrealistic. It's the industry who often has unrealistic standards.

@@asmrm1572Oh please. Being as skinny as these models are is not high metabolism, it is called being underweight and possibly anorexic because they are starving themselves. I am slim naturally a size XS/34 in Italy, but why should that size be ideal? I am a photographer and even girls that are heavier ( still on the healthy BMI) look beautiful in pictures. There is absolutely no need for models to be this skinny and this tall.

I started modelling at 12 in 1973. The modelling agency owns you! I stayed in it in until I was 21. I felt like I wasn't a person anymore, just an object. Thank you for this video. Now at 58, I have been able to forget a lot of it.

Hi, Dorothy , I AM always approach by modeling agencies owners because of My height and look , 2 days ago , I was approached by a represented of a good model agency ( Not as known as other big ones but it works with Big brands ), they are really into me ( I know that when they want somebody to be part of their agencies they try to put it Nice, to sugarcoat it so You can accept , I investigated more about them , I AM still doing some investigations tho . for the first time , after many approach I feel like I AM kind of interested on it ,) but I AM looking foward to know more about that world to know if wether its gonna be a good choice for me to accept it or not .

the exact same thing happend to me on one of my first shoots in Milan. The photographer touched my, i was super scared and couldnt even react.
When I told my agency, they reacted the same way as in this story.
"Yeah he is know for that". He could've raped me alone in his studio, but whatever.
I even uploaded a video on my YT channel and they took my out of their model board and kicked me out :)

This is exactly why so many runway models look like 13yr old boys. These designers don't know how to capture the essence of womanhood in their clothing (except for DVF, because she's a woman).
"Creative" male artists with their egos are toxic. Ever been around successful male artists? Many times - same story. Male teachers - my kids called one quarter pockets because his pants were so tight the students could get a good look at his junk. They were in middle school. Male classmates in teacher education school... showing nude women in paintings yammering away about form and gesture. Barf. This kind of male behavior is everywhere. Not all men act like this, but the ones who do are never called out - then and there. Many women students are uncomfortable but they never give push back then and there. They talk about it privately after class, after they are abused or raped. Wake up young women, our silence allows this BS to continue.

@@c.l.1820 Ali Michael, Patricia Van Der Vliet, Selena Forrest, Adesuwa Aighewi were/are currently booking pretty high profile gigs and Gemma Ward was probably the biggest high fashion model of the 2000s. They may not be well known names because the era of the supermodel is dead, but they're definitely nowhere near unknown in comparison to the thousands of more nameless models around the world.

The Nigerian girl speaks so eloquently about how if you're young and get into the industry it can take your innocence away. I just watched 60 minutes and they had child TH-cam stars and eventually asked the question about taking advantage of children. Now I understand why my mother wouldn't take me to an agency when I asked at age14 or 15.
Whilst 85% of photography graduates are female, only 15% of professionals are female!

Well, girls. We need to get to it and start talking business. Also, it is not necessary to have a Photography degree to be a good/great photographer. Lots of practice, doing an internship for a fellow photographer and attending workshop/ online classes can take you a long way.

My friend got drugged by her previous agent as a “revenge,, for leaving his agency. She was 15 at the time and he just left here there in the middle of a huge event with strangers while she was unconcious. Lots of people take advantage of these girls, thank you Vouge for shining a light on this issue
I believe it. It’s all about money and power. I’m a self taught fashion photographer but will never make it big because i don’t have the self centered attitude that most do in this industry.

What glitters ain’t gold. I feel bad for them especially when they’re touched. Regardless of how professional the setting may be it’s still your personal space that’s invaded.
Sometimes it is very conflicting, because at some point the designer or photographer really has to adjust and touch the model in some ways. It is really hard to tell the line because it is a job and the designer would expect the model to be ok with these touch ups.
So true. And they can't even say anything or speak up, because ppl will say, "Well yeah, you were posing nude in the first place, so you kinda brought this on yourself".

sweetpeace5 I think it is so hard to set a boundary. I have met girls who are very comfortable being touched. I think we should let people know that models mean that you would be touched. Those who are not comfortable being touched in the simplest ways should know that and chose not to enter. But there are indeed people who are taking advantage of models. This makes the situation very complicated.
It’s a reflection of our superficial world..without consumers of this realm, it wouldn’t be an industry. Many models are quite smart (despite what stereotypes would lead you to believe)...and instead of them modeling maybe they could be using their other skills to do things like solve world hunger, medical research etc :)

I love fashion with all my heart, so much that at the age of 18 I opened my first boutique even though all odds were against me. However, over the years I’m often perplex at how vicious this industry is. One can only imagine what some of these girls go through. May God help them.

I dabbled in modeling around 18-19. It was like this everywhere all the time, and it seemed like the closer you get to "making it," the more you had to do. sometimes, on some struggling/broke days, I ask myself, "Should i have just done it?" And then something like this video pops up, and I'm ok with my decision
As a male photographer, I COULD NOT IMAGINE doing something like that to girls or people generally... I dont understand how desperate or self centered someone could be to scar someone like that... Just awful
I’m so glad that Vogue is actually raising awareness about modeling industry. Instead of being a magazine just about what dress you should wear or the colors of the season, it tries to build a content which opens a lot of hidden doors of the industry, and talks about some important stuff of our culture.

- u have strong protective parents around u especially if young (tyra banks mom)

I don't think that she was under the same risk as ordinary girls. Her mother is too famous and probably has too many influential friends in the industry as for people to take advantage of her in the same way. If she'd speak out, people would listen and take notice, that would be too risky for them. It's all about power dynamics

Hypocrisy aside, it's good that these models are being allowed to express this side of the industry. It's far more insidious than most people are aware.

This is so sadly true. It happened to me or my roommates many times during my modeling career and then continued in my corporate life. As dark as this is I really think it’s important that these models are explaining some of the horrible ways their treated or exploited, to warn other girls.
I would personally love an entire documentary behind Gemma Wards story since she was once an “it girl”, left the industry and then returned. A sort of rise & fall story finishing off with her return and what appears to be her new found sense of self.

This video was an eye opener. All of these models had their own story to tell about what is was like for them to be treated in an uncomfortable way. All of you models are strong for telling your story while doing your job.
It's sad & unfortunate that there're a lot of young models under age surrounded
w a lot of older sharks who sees no boundaries & dignity & most of all respect for the models spc if they're underaged. Just think of them if they're
your children do you want any old sharks will do the same to your own children?? Think & have some decency
