Great vid. I definitely remember seeing some period matchlock/wheellock and flintlock/wheellock combination pieces from the 17th and 18th century, but my guess is they were exceedingly rare and not many gunsmiths could make them. Wheellocks are always facinating.

Had no idea they were doing acid etching over 200 years ago. Thanks for sharing this.

Man, that is a truly unique firearm - massive bore, combined with some delicate ornamentation. I asked my wife if she had ever heard about acid etching and she replied with a simple 'yeah'. She's holding out on me. Great use of "amalgamation". Thank you for detailing such a unique piece of history.

The makers of suits of armour developed that technique to decorate their work. Wax is "painted" on the steel, the pattern is scratched into the wax and the piece is then submerged into acid or ferrochloride. After the etching the wax is washed off and the eroded patterns were filled with blackening materials. Customers in the 15th/6th centuries wanted their armour to look like their fancy clothes with ornamented edges and seams or lace. Well, and as far as I know the next step came when the printing press had been invented. The makers of suits of armour used the same technique to make drawings of their designs on wax-covered plates of zinc or copper. And these plates were used to produce catalogues. Etchings were simpler to make than copperprints and artists like Dürer and later Rembrandt refined them.

Please quit calling these classic wheel locks a rifle, unless it has a rifled barrel. Details matter. Keep your powder dry....
