In this video we finish our Kibler Woodsrunner kit. Overall I had around 80 hours in this build. I started in March and finished in August. You could finish yours much faster if you wanted to, but I went at my own pace and learned a lot. This video covers cosmetic details like wood stain and metal finish.

Hey Ethan!
WOW! Just simply, WOW! The final product was OUTSTANDING! Thanks for showing us the steps you took to reach the finish. Some of the other gun smiths I follow on TH-cam mention that firearms that were built on the frontier, back in the day, weren't perfect masterpieces... since they were built by people who did not make their living primarily by being Gun Smiths. WELL DONE!
Glad you loved the oil! Really like your finished work. It’s a beauty looking forward to your future projects.
Ethan: I salute you. You keep this AMERICAN tradition alive. And here you show the tactics, the way you make it work. Very in depth, very well described. I love to watch a man who knows the way of this. Thank you and I again salute you sir!
Absolutely beautiful, good job, Ethan!
I have a authentic double barrel black Powder. I would want my new rifle to look new and only get patina from being passed down over many generations one to the next. However I do enjoy this.
Outstanding!
You did a fine job on that build Sir. Well done!
Thanks Benjamin!
Well done!
Nicely done Ethan.
The rifle was absolutely beautiful. Thank you Ethan for showing every part of the build. Can’t wait to see the Fowler build.
Thanks Larry!
I just ordered a Kibllers Colonial kit, and can't wait for it to arrive. Very nice job on your new project, and I'm sure your client will be happy.
Awesome, thank you!
Thanks
Very nice, and inspirational too! Thanks, Ethan!
I've got two concurrent Woodsrunner builds in progress, which started as one kit purchased last year, then later I got a carved Quaker practice stock to mess with and one thing led to another -- so now I'm 90% done with a kit-bashed half-stock. I didn't want to waste the kit's original stock, so over time I've been buying the rest of the parts for a second build. Both projects have been on hiatus since earlier in the summer because of other commitments, but I'm looking forward to finishing both Woodsrunners this autumn.
I recently stained my lock to match my other hardware on my Fowler. Kibler’s video on disassembling the lock was very helpful.
Glad to hear it. You'll be happier now.
Amazing!!
Ethan, with the mustard, you should have used Chicago bright green sweet relish, sport peppers, a Vienna hot dog, sliced tomato, poppy seed bun, chopped onion and a pickle spear.
Nice job, was kinda worried the metal aging would match the stock, but you pulled it together nicely. I still struggle with the aging process myself.
Thanks dude!
Great video. Really enjoyed the aging techniques.
I am very impressed with your "first effort ever" at carving. I have the artistic ability of a potato, so it's good to know others can do that which l can not.
Personal tastes vary wildly, and if l wete commissioning a build, l would want it to look like l had just plunked down the silver at Ye Olde Gunsmithe's this morning, and not just bought an antique at auction. To each as he sees fit.
As an aside, l think l saw you in a Contemporary Longrifle class video doing a little ivy vine stock carving once. If that was you, congratulations. You literally dropped my jaw with how effortlessly you produced that art.
Keep on producing the instructional videos videos!
Still crunching pennies because I want my Kibler Southern Mountain rifle. Love the way these guns go together.
Just watching you go through this build and seeing the finished rifle, you should work for Kibler in sales. Thanks for sharing your experiences building the kit.
You’ve come a long way pilgrim. Very nice
I love the winged skull on the lock plate. I have my Woodsrunner on the bench almost ready to complete. I’ve been on the fence about the final finish. I’m going to use Becks Flintlock oil now. Thanks for the series it’s been super helpful. Nice job on the rifle it looks great!
Thank you. The skull is the detail I've been studying in my own work for a while now, the owner asked I put it on the piece, I'm happy with how it camem out.
Glad the video was helpful! Enjoy your build!
Hey Ethan, very helpful video, you really walk us through the whole process in a clear manner. I noticed you were using a Chambers spring vise. Do you have any tips for re-compressing a spring that has been removed from the lock? I have the same vise, and the spring slips out and shoots across the room every time…
I don’t have much advice, I didn’t talk about the lock reassembly because I fought it a lot, lol. Not that it’s bad design, I’m just not good at it is all.
I found I had to really torque it down to get it back in there. I was afraid to break it but had to go a couple turns past where I was comfortable. I also held the spring flat on the bench while clamping so it couldn’t fly out.
Nice work Sir!
Where are you from, I am from Kokomo, and my Father and ilI built a few Flintlocks! I did F & I re-enacting for years.
Nice job. It looks good.
Great job
Very interesting video. I'm doing a project myself and will employ the some of the same processes. I had a friend in the cabinet making business and he used a heavy chain to make dents and dings, just an idea.
Well Done 👍
Awesome. I really like the reddish color too. Nice work
Thanks!
Muy hermoso, felicitaciones de los mejores
The grey on the metalwork is exquisite. I think I'd have a bit less pitting, but to each their own. Bravo Ethan!
Thanks!
Nice antiquineing job, Ethan
Glad you enjoyed it
Ethan Its a very fine looking rifle thats been on many hunts.
"Funeral " Pattern is nice for this suff.
Thank you
Awesome job Ethan, I see some things I would like to try, and some things I didn't like, individual taste overall it it finished up very nice! Getting ready to start on my "fowler" i made notes on things I want to try on it! Kinda want to wait to see what you do with your fowler.
Thanks! I've completed my research for it, now I just have to find the time to build it lol
Where did you get the graver from?
Bro you have to made gun powder. What is use gun powder ingredients 🤔
I hate that, if you ate doing re-enacting it is a relatively new gun, use is another thing. But people tend to make it look Old.
I too used the Iron Nitrate. It caused rust along the barrel where the wood made contact with the metal barrel. What can I do?
Keep the barrel oiled, it’ll be okay
Browning solution.....Homer Dangler's solution
Definitely something I want to try.
Не буду тратить час своего времени, на просмотр того как кто-то тратит восемьдесят часов своего.
Do you follow Mike Bellevue and all the problems he has had due to showing how to build a muzzloader kit? Has TH-cam given you any problems?
Yes I’ve followed him for a long time. I hate what’s happening to him. I’ve not had any trouble, yet, but I expect to
Sorry but if the owner was so adament about what he wanted used why did he not do the build himself. Just curious... Great build.
I dunno. I was happy to follow along. It pushed me to use new stuff.
The owner(a very close family friend) has all of the artistic prowess and skill with hand tools of a new born baby baboon. And I can assure you, as they have expressed to anyone who got to see the rifle in person they are extremely grateful to the ILoveMuzzleloading channel for putting it together.
“There could be a college level course on stock staining” - I totally agree. Every time it’s an adventure and learning experience. I’ve started keeping notes each time with each step, but so far it’s been different every time. Maybe after three or four hundred stocks I’ll have it figured out.
Huuuuyyyyyyyyyyyy huuuufffffffffffff que bien con explicación manual muy bueno
