    What’s your favorite thing to do in SMA?

    • @demiansolis
      @demiansolis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi guys. I am happy you enjoyed SMA. My favorite things to do in SMA are getting lost in colorful SMA streets and let SMA to surprise me, take photos of ancient windows and doors, have coffee and dinner in some of the many wonderful restaurants and cafés, enjoy the artsy multicultural atmosphere of SMA. I recommend you visit the state capital Guanajuato City. It is as amazing as SMA but more affordable. You may also consider visiting the colonial village of Mineral de Pozos, 30 mins away from SMA. Many people think Mineral de Pozos looks like how SMA looked 50 years ago, before it became world famous. Finally, if religious art is your thing check out the Sactuary of Atotonilco, at short distance from SMA. It is also a World Heritage site and has been nicknamed the "Sixtine Chapel" of Mexico.

    You did great on your own, David! But I’m sure it’s not the same without your other half. Your honesty about how you felt venturing out alone, is so nice. I’m glad you felt better so quickly, Travis. Really enjoyed your hike through the botanical garden! So funny when Travis said there weren’t that many bugs, while David was having quite a time keeping them out of his face! You two are so real. As we have tried to narrow down our list of possible cities, two things helped. We crossed off cities with hot/humid weather, and cities full of expats. San Miguel looks very nice but it was cut immediately along with the Lake Chapala area. Both seem great but we speak Spanish and don’t want USA-light. We still hope to visit at some point. Thx very much for the great videos !

      Im from San Miguel and every year it gets more and more American that San Miguel is starting to lose its charm. Especially with Rich expats moving in forcing the housing market to go sky high. Meanwhile the locals are having to either move away or struggle. The locals are what made San Miguel but the mayor of San Miguel is corrupt individual whos only interest is to put San Miguel on the map worldwide so he can profit off tourism for his own hotels and bs. Good luck!

      Yep, it is a shame. I saw the same thing happen in Costa Rica many years ago.
      We are retiring in Mexico to get away from the keep-up-with-the-joneses mentality. We have lived abroad before and thankfully speak Spanish. We prefer to live in local areas with local neighbors and assimilate into their culture.

    Hola chicos. My husband and I moved to San Miguel de Allende two years ago right before Covid. The weather and architecture is why we moved here plus it is affordable. Yes affordable if you do it right. I looked at Merida but could not stand the heat. Same with Puerto Vallarta. I was hesitant because of the gringos because I want to practice my spanish, but really you don’t see that many and most people speak spanish to me which is what I prefer. We are not vegan so we forward past the vegan agenda stuff but otherwise your videos are enjoyable.

    I love SMA having been there a few times. Definitely a possible retirement destination. You guys did a great job of capturing some of what makes it special. I’m sure I’m not the first to recommend visiting Guanajuato the next time you visit SMA. Equally as magical, much more “Mexican” but with a completely different wonderful vibe. It is said that Guanajuato inspired the land of the dead in the movie Coco. It is spectacular in its beauty and culture. Probably a challenging place for an expat to live (not much of an expat community) but a wonderful place to visit.

      Haha it’s hard for us, too! Merida was a perfect spot for our first place to land in Mexico, and has been a wonderful home base for us as we travel around. It definitely has its pros and cons (like everywhere!), so it really just depends on what you’re looking for - there’s truly so many great cities here, we just recommend getting to as many as you can to see what clicks with you!

    • @eduardof7322
      @eduardof7322 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      If you are a foreigner, I think that the best option for living in Mexico depends a lot on what you are looking for. Here are some of my personal suggestions:
      -Tropical beach city: Puerto Vallarta
      -Old colonial town: Guanajuato
      -Big city: Guadalajara
      -Old colonial city: Querétaro
      -Mountain/forest town: Valle de Bravo
      -Desert and beach city: La Paz
      -Mediterranean mood: Ensenada
      -Both tropical and colonial: Campeche
      -Small and isolated beach town: Huatulco
      -Hidden gem for foreigners: Veracruz

    • @eduardof7322
      @eduardof7322 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      CDMX is incredible but it´s massive and it may not be for everyone. If you like cities the size of Shanghai, New York, London or Sao Paulo, it may be for you. Veracruz is a hidden gem because it has everything: Food out of this world, tons of heritage and history, tropical vibes, amazing and unique culture, a lot of modern life facilities (Huge malls, supermarkets, restaurants, etc.), extremely affordable prices, a super cool vibe, and it is just aside the sea. The only thing about it is that the beaches are not very pretty, indeed, they are perhaps some of the less pretty in Mexico, and that´s the only reason why it is not a very popular destination. But they are very calm and peaceful, with no waves and low sea floor, but they are a little grey. If they looked more similar to the Caribbean, I´m sure Veracruz would be perhaps the most popular destination for foreigners in Mexico, but the not so nice beaches is what has keep it as a secret.

    Your surprise: Guanajuato
    And David, your belief that solo travel is brave. I do not feel that way at all. I prefer it because there is so much freedom, no negotiating, no compromising, simply being in the flow of what arises. And when alone it is a treat to connect with the locals more and be present. I find traveling with another to be distracting. So, that is my take on solo travel. Guanajuato, right...😉

Love that you added the historical info! 10:30 hahahaha!!!!! Where you were at 12:18 was just a five minute walk down from where I stayed, I did that walk downtown almost every day. SMA the tourist version is beautiful. Where a lot of locals live though is much less beautiful. The past couple years, sadly, there has been a lot drug cartel activity and insecurity in Guanajuato with their corrupt conservative PAN government. Still, You should check out the little town of Mineral de Pozos. Do an overnight - but you have to go on the outskirts where the views and ruins of old mines and haciendas (trains from the 30’s) are surreal - mind blowingly beautiful. Also check out Hacienda Lavanda - take a picnic!

    David & Travis..this has to stop! You are enjoying yourselves too much in Mexico and showing the world it's beauty, affordability (SMA not so much..lol), and that you can live a much higher quality of life at a much lower price than in America. When will this madness end, guys? When will you come back to the USA to suffer like the rest of us drowning in debt? Never?! Ok..I'm good with that! 😜 Enjoy, guys! 😉 #Yaaas!

    The Coconut Telegraph says SMA is "gringo-fied". Your take?

    • @TravelWTravis
      @TravelWTravis  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It definitely has a bit of a Disney feel to it, but also had a really rich history of nonprofits (over 100+) where gringos can give back and help the local community. In this Sat’s video we’ll be talking a bit more about what we found (and about Stirling Dickinson’s legacy), but overall while it was definitely gringo-ified, it felt very different from Cancun, Tulum or even PV.

    • @rebeccar4312
      @rebeccar4312 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A different kind of gringo-as most in Tulum, Cancun and PV are more tourists, passing through, party oriented. SMA is more filled with retiree ex-pats that live there. That would definitely create a different vibe

    Mexican youtubers say that people moving from the US and Canada is a reason why this city is so expensive and 20% or more of the population is not Mexican because they cannot afford to live there any more. Interesting reverse of what immigration usually does - that being people of poverty immigrating to a country for a better living.

      @@stephanielucas8203 Mole itself is animal free. But it's a pain in the butt to make homemade..so I would just use Doña Maria's mole available at most stores..both in regular and green variety. Simply add your favorite vegan meat and you're done!

      @@Nightbird. oh that's really interesting! I've seen manteca mentioned in recipes for mole so I thought it was a regular ingredient. I've used Rick Bayless' recipe for red mole for example. But I will look for Doña Maria's!

    • @Nightbird.
      @Nightbird. 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stephanielucas8203 I think the manteca (lard) was in a particular recipe you found. But in MX they do like to use lard in many recipes because it adds a lot of flavor..just like in the Southern USA they like to use bacon fat for the same reason. Not to mention "waste not..want not". But Doña Maria's mole is excellent..and since I'm not vegan I like to use the broth from the chicken I boil to use for meat with the mole. But plain water is fine too. To remove the mole from the glass it comes in..put a piece of paper on your counter..notice where the ink dots are on the lid..then place the glass lid down on the paper and use a dull knife to gently insert it where the dots are and pull the metal away slightly from the jar. Be really careful and gentle to not break the glass or make the knife slip and cut you. Do this on all dots..carefully flip the glass back upright..and pull the lid off with your fingers. The oil in the jar usually is going to get on your fingers and counter so that's normal. Then use the knife to loosen all around the mole paste and gently use the knife to pry it out. I put it in a blender with 4 cups of liquid and blend on high for about a 30 seconds. Then put it in a sauce pan and cook it on medium for about a half hour and stirring every 5 minutes so it doesn't stick to the bottom too badly. A nonstick sauce pan is ideal for this..but if you only have metal I would suggest using a metal wisk to stir it and scrape what is sticking to the bottom. This mole is pretty spicy so if you want it a bit milder with a nuttier flavor..2-4 tablespoons of your fave creamy peanut butter will do the trick while in the blender. And the green variety is super mild and creamy with a very subtle flavor. Enjoy and take care!
