Man, finally watch this movie. Yeah, I can definitely see what the hype was about. Totally deserving of it. Helps that its message and story happens to be REALLY relevant to our times, or maybe it just feels that way because the story is so well told

Very fine video essay about Citizen Kane, certainly one of the greatest achievements in film.
Kane is the hero of the movie but he is also its villain.
He's said to have acted like a swine. But the reporter and his ex-wife at the same time feel sorry for him.
Kane is probably one of the best examples in a movie where a character can become a self centered, ego maniac power hungry despot and still believe that he was completely right. And the audience is shown how the upbringing and events have led a sweet boy step by step to be seen as a swine. And that's just the story.
The famous photography also carries messages of the film. Kane towers over his 2nd wife as he tries to twist her into a puppet performer, until she has had enough. Then the camera technique changes when even Kane realizes, for a moment at least, that he can't dominate her.
The camera technique not only shows his isolation, but when his 2nd wife leaves him, his life is shattered and we see multiple images of Kane in a mirror which show that his fractured life will never be the same.
And underneath there is emotion about regret, and missing opportunities as one moves to later life and faces death.
A bit more; the soundtrack by Bernard Herrmann is top notch and the acting is often superb.
Again, a fine video about an outstanding film.

I appreciate the fact that you started chuckling about the 'Krull is my favorite movie' bit.
Started laughing too, especially since I haven't seen it since I was about six years old.
    ... I'm 28 now.

Showing ceilings was actually pioneered by John Ford in Stagecoach, which also happens to be the film that Welles watched countless times to learn how to make films.

I know it make me sound like a bit of philistine but I found this movie a hard slog to get through but I do understand what you are saying with this movies significance for the technique of making movies and the influence it has had on cinema, I suppose there is a difference between The Academy Awards and MTV Movie Awards.

If not the greatest film of all time, it's probably the most important, especially for filmmakers. If you did the entire film as a shot for shot remake, it would't feel dated and would still be compelling. Probably the most important milestone in film, next to 2001 in terms of technical significance intersecting with audience popularity.

the Simpsons used so many shots and ideas from Citizen Kane. they used it in multiple eps too. I didn't notice at the time, but one of the Halloween specials has Orson Wells. Chief Wiggum says how about a punch in the nose bud? Wells repeats the phrase nose bud speculatively and then shudders. I knew it had some kind of meaning that was estranged and full of distant longing. this is total minutiae and I apologise. the long shots that capture the feelings of social distance are more important, but I couldn't help sharing my tiny Eureka! moment.

Everyone talks about the visual aspect of Citizen Kane. Its style. But that story, the story of Kane’s regrets, is the story that defines almost anyone who grew up in Western culture. Do you end up lamenting Rosebud or not? All of us can ask that question and the answer will very much define a lot of us. It’s not to be overlooked when discussing the greatness of Citizen Kane.

i have *no idea* of why i thought about this....but i think i would want to see you do an video essay on pornography
i dunno, just feels that your opinion has valuable points that i dont have, and i really want to learn, so what better way to show off what something is,means, should be and could be in a meaningful way than porn. either way hope you at least got a giggle out of this silly request

If you don’t see how the narrative, concept and content of this film are even more timeless and relevant today than in 1941 I feel sad for you. Look at it again with an open mind...you’ll get “the point!”

Originally I'd only listen to Word or Dice Funk, never actually watch Renegade Cut unless I've heard or seen the movie. Though this year I started taking a film class over the summer and I noticed there is a bunch of films I had watched in that class that are on your channel. With that said, I still hate this movie.
