    I have one of these cameras. I didn't buy it to produce commercial photographs I brought it to have some fun with. I love the massive zoom range I have taken some really neat photographs that would have otherwise been impossible to take without the zoom. I have uploaded them to Facebook on Facebook the quality is acceptable for me as an amateur it is a great fun camera. If I wanted commercial quality I would have spent many thousands of dollars on a commercial camera. Use it as a fun amateur camera with a Zoom on steroids.

    Hi Scott. Helpful video. I think the Nikon would make a decent travel and maybe an all-around camera. I have the Canon 6D and several lenses but have traded/sold a couple of longer zooms because of weight. I've done enough research to see the strengths and weaknesses of the Nikon. I'm sort of on the fence between the 950 and 1000. I am wondering your feelings of performance of each camera say at the 2000mm equivalent. 3000mm is just an insane amount of zoom, but even on a tripod with atmospheric conditions... Would the 1000 zoomed to 2000mm give any better resolution than the 950 at 2000mm (maxed out)? I'm wondering because of the 1000s ' extra glass it might make a difference. Thanks

      Sorry, I was only able to do a surface level look at the camera. Like you were saying the huge optical zoom presents challenges and potential issues. I don't have the direct experience to say if one is better than the other at a given focal length. From a convenience standpoint the one in this video is a very large camera so I'd personally prefer the smaller one and I'd likely find it difficult to properly use the extra optical reach at those focal lengths. Maybe like moon, ocean... large mountains regions... hard to say. I do wonder if those can be rented anywhere.

      The camera in this video is huge. No idea if Nikon will continue this model of camera but if they do and it has the same size sensor I wouldn't expect much difference in image quality.

    how many cameras at say 2500 or 3000mm do you know which take fantastic crystal clear pictures, give it break . If they exist your baying 50,000$ or way more , even, and a truck to cart it about . At the the 50mm distance it's not a Pro camera but if you know how to set it up first, it is more than capable of taking very respectable pictures. Horses for courses.

    • @ScottJWaldron

      That depends on what you want to do with it and what your expectations are. I said all I could about the camera in the video. I have limited time with these cameras due to recording at a local camera shop. Basically it has a tiny sensor and huge lens, but throughout the range of zoom the lens aperture isn't especially large. While it's unique and can have uses... it's a very specialized camera.

    I have an a7iii with 28/70 and D500 with 18-400 but I want a teleobjetive...
    The doubt is a cheap teleobjetive as gloxy 900f8 or samyang for mi Reflex or a nikon p1000

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think I can provide to you useful feedback on those options. I haven't used mirror lenses. They will give you a ring shape to the background highlights, which is an unusual look. The P1000 is a complete package, but you should really try to find one to test out first because image quality can't match something APS-C or FF. If you are fine with the image output then I'd say the P1000 (eg. 3000mm vs. 1700mm). You can also consider the P900 from Nikon which should be a lot cheaper now.

    I have that camera and for me its main fault is the resolution ... it needs more pixels to have an acceptable image quality in the photos, if it weren't for the incredible zoom it has it would have been a mistake to buy it. Very poor quality of focus and resolution in the image of the photos.

      Use the video recording at 4K, then you can also use the built in "Capture" feature to take pictures with. They actually come out significantly better than the dedicated photo mode. The 4K video is where this thing REALLY SHINES!
      It's ideal for what I wanted it for, filming Grizzly Bears in the mountains of Wyoming from on top of a 13,000 foot mountain. The grizzly's feed on moth's within the shale rock on the side of the mountain.
      This camera let's me get right up next to them for a great video and picture.

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on how much focal length range you need. The P1000 has a small sensor and the lens aperture through the zoom is not especially large. I think you will get much better quality out of a 1" sensor all-in-one camera if you don't need that much range. Here are a few examples:
      Lumix DC-FZ1000 II: bhpho.to/2GdNlEQ
      That has a 400mm equivilent lens.
      Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 IV:
      bhpho.to/2Gf1BNz
      That has a 600mm equivalent lens. That's the latest version of the RX10. Sony still sells the older ones new at a lower price.
      (those are affiliated links to B&H)
      On a side note, my cousin used to do storm chasing. I don't think he does it anymore. He moved out of the OK area where he did chasing. Now he is doing research in atmospheric science and has a PhD. Here is his site: www.ontheplains.com/GALLERIES/WEATHER/

    If you were to get a tripod for this camera, what would you reccomend?

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a big camera (3 lb 2 oz), so something heavy duty would be ideal. I only used this camera for a short amount of time and didn't use the tripod connector. I'm not a great person to ask about a tripod specifically for this. Maybe try to find someone with real-world use.
      I'd suggest trying to find an actual camera shop to visit. Keep in mind tripods can get really expensive if you want something special. Materials used change the price a lot. Carbon fiber tripods cost a lot more than aluminum ones, but will be lighter weight and easier to carry.
      The only tripod that I've used that could handle that camera are the Slik 700 based tripods. Technically I bought the 700 DX legs with a head from another company, so I can't comment on Slik's tripod heads, but I'm going to assume they are decent quality considering how the legs are.
      For example (Amazon affiliate links)...
      SLIK Pro 700 BHX based tripods:
      3 way head version (19 lb capacity):
      amzn.to/30yJxMe
      amzn.to/3HAPzNq
      Ball head version (11 lb capacity):
      amzn.to/3HzijpQ
      These tripods get over 6' tall. They also weigh 7 to 8 lb depending on what head you get. Definitely not a small tripod.

    What many today shooters simply DO NOT know that this camera's sensor is over 4X smaller than 8.8mm sensor.
    At the same time the claimed 25.4mm (1.0 inch) sensor is nowhere close being 16mm.
    Just lies to fool and sell you.

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, the sensor inside this camera is the 1/2.3" size, which is the smallest sensor that the vast majority of entry level cameras use. There is a very good article on Wikipedia detailing the exact differences in sizes ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_sensor_format ). Besides sensor size, the amount of light per given sensor area is extremely important. This camera, especially at long focal lengths, has a small aperture which further exasperates the small sensor. That said, it's a very very unique camera given it's optical zoom range. For the novelty of it I find the camera still to be pretty neat given the limitations.
